        Activity Guided Isolation of Antioxidant Tannoid Principles from Anogeissus latifolia

        Oxidative stress is an important causative factor in several human chronic diseases, such asatherosclerosis, cardiovascular disorders, mutagenesis, cancer, several neurodegenerative disorders, and the agingprocess. Phenolics and tannins are reported to be good antioxidants. Anogeissus latifolia (Combretaceae) bark hasnot available till date. Hence the present study was undertaken to isolate antioxidant compounds by activity-guided isolation. Inhibtion of diphenyl picryl hydrazyl (DPH) and Xanthine oxidase along with photoc-hemiluminescence assay were used as bioassay for antioxidant activity. Activity guided isolation was carried outusing silica column and the compounds were quantified using HPLC. Ethyl acetate and butanol fraction exhibitedpotent antioxidant activity. Bioassay-guided isolation led to isolation of ellagic acid (1) and dimethyl ellagic acid(2these three major tannoid principles present in A. latifolia, are responsible for the antioxidant potential andpossibly their therapeutic potential.

        Preparation and Charecterization of Bromofullerenes in New Stoichiometry

        It is well established that halogenated fullerene derivatives act as synthetic intermediates for further substitution via replacement with nucleophlies. In the present work, systematic studies were carried out on the synthesis of bromofullerenes under different experimental conditions. The effect of reaction time on the product formed was observed. We observed the formation of new compound of bromofullerenes in a different stoichiometric ratio i.e., $C_{60}Br_{14}$; in addition to previous reported bromofullerenes in the stoichiometric ratio of $C_{60}Br_6$, $C_{60}Br_8$, and $C_{60}Br_{24}$. The new derivative of bromofullerene was isolated and well characterized by various analytical techniques like FT-IR, TGA, DSC, and elemental analysis. In this paper, detail of the synthesis and characterization of the bromofullerene prepared are described. The yields obtained were better than those reported previously.

      • Artificial intelligence (AI) for 3D printing: Comparative analysis of machine-learning algorithms to find optimal printing parameters

        Additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing is a subject of active building research and practice. Nevertheless, high-quality 3D printing is challenging, because it requires a lot of experience and knowledge on fine tuning of various printing parameters, such as the rate of material flow, head speed, layer height, shape and size of the extrusion nozzle, etc. Therefore, this study addresses prediction of the optimal parameter combination and the quality of AM objects before 3D printing. Assuming that the quality of material deposition can be identified by the constant connection between paths (lines) on a layer, we employed artificial intelligence (AI) to predict the path connection quality in actual printing process. To this end, four different machine learning (ML) models, including K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Deep neural network (DNN) were trained and tested. Using a KUKA robot arm, 400 printing experiments (280 for ML training and 120 for testing) were conducted to collect a dataset of the control parameters and corresponding connection status. The results show that ML models produce different prediction output of accuracy, precision, recall, and performance score. Our findings suggest that RF and DNN are among the most accurate models to find the best 3d printing outcome. This study contributes to expanding the AM knowledge about parameter adjustment and printing process.

        Incidental Breast Cancers Identified in the One-Stop Symptomatic Breast Clinic

        Purpose: Breast cancers can be asymptomatic at an early stage and hence screening programmes play an important role in detecting breast cancers early. Even in those patients who present with breast symptoms, breast cancers may be present at a site remote to the site of symptoms. In this study, we aimed to assess the frequency, site and imaging modality used to identify these incidental cancers in the symptomatic one-stop breast clinic. Methods: All patients who were seen in our breast clinic with breast symptoms over a two-year period were included in the study. We correlated the presenting symptoms of patients diagnosed with breast cancer with imaging (mammogram and ultrasound) findings. Incidental cancers were defined as “histologically confirmed breast cancers which were impalpable, remote to the site of symptoms and only identified on imaging.” Results: In the study period, 281 women were diagnosed with breast cancer out of 4,400 patients seen at the one-stop breast clinic. Thirty six patients (12.8%) diagnosed with breast cancer had an incidental cancer which was only identified by imaging. The majority of contralateral, incidental cancers were identified by both mammography and ultrasound (US) and patients were all above 35 years. Conclusion: We suggest mammography of both breasts and US of the symptomatic breast in order to identify incidental cancers.

        This research provides a status check on the dominance of handcrafted textiles in the modern fashion and textile industry. “Is hand crafting the embellishment technique for the modern fashion and textile industry?” This research unlocks further opportunities for incorporating hand made textiles by international designers and brands highlighting factors making handcrafted fabric’s successful and influencing selection. The technology and craft worlds are increasingly colliding, with new generation of couturiers realizing that the way to the next generation’s hearts is going to be through their gadgets. The communication on the digital platform, in which brands are increasingly interacting with consumers, the New World has it all over the Old. In contrast to selecting a product from a lot, consumers want to have the option to order online, allowing more customization of the product. The research evidently shows that culturally and innovatively created hand crafted textiles are in demand in a niche market. The global consumer is slowly becoming aware of and appreciating the fact that natural fabrics are not only practical, but they’re fashionable too. People are seeking out simple, classic pieces of handcrafted apparel and lifestyle products with natural finishes and simpler decorative elements. Recently, in response to consumers’ interest in environmentally responsible products, handlooms and handicrafts are a definite alternative.

        Pharmacognostic Evaluation of the Flower of Alcea rosea L.

        The flowers of Alcea roses L., Malvaceae, sold in the Indian market under the trade name `Gulkhairo`, are well known for their expectorant, cooling and diuretic properties and used in many indigenous cough mixtures in India. The present paper deals with the detailed pharmacognosy of the floral parts including morphological, anatomical, phytochemical and fluorescence characters. Some of the diagnostic features of the drug are : pedicel characterized by multicellular appendages, stellate hairs, rosette crystals of Ca-oxalate. starch sheath and large sized mucilage canals; sepals having distinctive multicellular appendages arranged in a semilunar fashion present adaxialty at their base; monadelphous stamens, pollen grains pentaporate provided with dimorphic spines; placentation axile, ovules campylotropous; dark green fluorescence of the powder with nitrocellulose in amyl acetate and yellow fluorescence of trichomes under Fluorescence microscope.

        Standardization and Quality Evaluation of Banafsha

        `Banafsha` is an important herbal drug of indigenous systems of medicine. Flowers of Viola odorata L. (Violaceae) are considered to constitute the genuine drug `Banafsha`. However, due to limited distribution of this plant, another species of Viola, i.e. V. pilosa having almost similar medicinal properties, is mostly used under this vernacular instead. Ethnobotanically also different species of Viola i.e. V. odorata, V. pilosa and V. betonicifolia are used for various ailments at different places in our country. In the present study two species of Viola, namely V. pilosa and V. betonicifolia along with the commercial samples of `Banafsha` were studied and authenticated. It was observed that the market samples procured from Dehradun, Mumbai, Lucknow, Palampur, Ramnagar and Ranikhet showed close resemblance with Viola pilosa in having similar morphological characters like uniseriate hairs on the ovary, geniculate and clavate style, truncate stigma and almost similar TLC profiles. On the other hand the Almora sample was identified as Viola betonicifolia by the presence of large purple flowers, clavate style and convex stigma forming hump like structure. However, the market sample procured from Pathankot was found to be a mixture of two species of Viola namely, V. pilosa and V. odorata having dominance of the former species.

        Naphthaquinones from some Boraginaceous Taxa-A Chemical Review

        The naphthaquinones-isohexenylnaphthazarins-are mostly found in the ceratenchymatous cells of the roots of some boraginaceous taxa. A total of 34 naphthazarins and their derivatives have been isolated from these taxa till date.
