GROSSBERG-KARSHON TWISTED CUBES AND BASEPOINT-FREE DIVISORS
Megumi Harada,Jihyeon Jessie Yang 대한수학회 2015 대한수학회지 Vol.52 No.4
Let G be a complex semisimple simply connected linear al- gebraic group. The main result of this note is to give several equivalent criteria for the untwistedness of the twisted cubes introduced by Gross- berg and Karshon. In certain cases arising from representation theory, Grossberg and Karshon obtained a Demazure-type character formula for irreducible G-representations as a sum over lattice points (counted with sign according to a density function) of these twisted cubes. A twisted cube is untwisted when it is a “true” (i.e., closed, convex) polytope; in this case, Grossberg and Karshon’s character formula becomes a purely positive formula with no multiplicities, i.e., each lattice point appears precisely once in the formula, with coefficient +1. One of our equiva- lent conditions for untwistedness is that a certain divisor on the special fiber of a toric degeneration of a Bott-Samelson variety, as constructed by Pasquier, is basepoint-free. We also show that the strict positivity of some of the defining constants for the twisted cube, together with convexity (of its support), is enough to guarantee untwistedness. Finally, in the special case when the twisted cube arises from the representation-theoretic data of λ an integral weight and w a choice of word decomposition of a Weyl group element, we give two simple necessary conditions for untwistedness which is stated in terms of λ and w.

Bangle (Zingiber purpureum) is a tropical ginger that is used as a spice in Southeast Asia. Phenylbutenoid dimers isolated from Bangle have exhibited neurotrophic effects in primary cultured rat cortical neurons and PC12 cells. Furthermore, chronic treatment with phenylbutenoid dimers enhances hippocampal neurogenesis in olfactory bulbectomized mice. In this study, we investigated the effects of Bangle extract on behavior and hippocampal neurogenesis in vivo. SAMP8 mice, which are an established model for accelerated aging, with age-related learning and memory impairments, were given a Bangle-containing diet for 1 month, and subsequent behavioral tests and immunohistochemistry for Ki67, a proliferating cellmarker, were performed. We found that the Bangle-containing diet improved spatial learning and memory deficits in the Morris water maze and significantly increased the numbers of Ki67-positive cells in the dentate gyrus of the SAMP8 mice. In addition, the Bangle extract exhibited a neurotrophin-like activity as indicated by the induction of neurite sprouting in PC12 cells. Our results suggest that Bangle is beneficial for the prevention of age-related progression of cognitive impairment.
Consumption characteristics of propionate in anaerobic digestate using microbial fuel cells
( Megumi Ueda ) 한국농업기계학회 2018 한국농업기계학회 학술발표논문집 Vol.23 No.1
The anaerobic digestion technology can produce combustible biogas and liquid fertilizer from waste biomass such as livestock manures and agricultural residues. However, excessive pretreatment of raw biomass and high loading operation to improve fermentation efficiency often cause environmentally fatal change in the anaerobic reactor and brake the balance of microbial community then result in the accumulation of propionate. Propionate is one of organic acids produced intermediately in anaerobic digestion process and decompose more slowly than other intermediate products. Since accumulation of propionate cause to lower pH and stop whole fermentation reaction, it is desirable to avoid its accumulation or reduce the concentration promptly. Microbial fuel cells (MFC) has been developed to produce electricity using anaerobic bacteria from organic wastewater. MFC dominated with anaerobically digested slurry as a bacterial source can generate electricity by consuming propionate in culturing media, while the process of decomposition has not been reported yet minutely. The purpose of this report is to clarify the consumption characteristics of propionate in MFC comparing with ordinary anaerobic digestion process. The experimental reactor prototyped of acrylic transparent plate has one chamber with 33.8cm3 in volume. The chamber was filled with 13g of activated carbon granules and separated the anode and the air cathode with polyurethane sponge. Anode and cathode were connected with a lead wire through the electric resistance of 100 ohm for MFC. Bacterial source supplied to the reactor was collected in the mud of paddy field. Feed solution including propionate as substrate was replaced every day. Acclimation method were set at 4 conditions as follows: gradually increasing substrate (acetate or propionate) concentration from 1.2 to 12 mmol/L for 7 days (Ac rise, Pr rise) and keep constant substrate (acetate or propionate) concentration of 12 mmol/L for 7 days (Ac const., Pr const.). The condition using acetate were operated as control. Electricity generated in MFC was logged every 30 seconds and observe the consumption rate of propionate and electricity generation in the consumption experiment. As a result, electric energy at day 7 the day that 12 mmol/L was added under all conditions was 0.25±0.18 kJ/m2 (Ac rise), 0.60±0.26 kJ/m2 (Ac const.), 3.00±0.51 kJ/m2 ( Pr rise) and 6.45±1.26 kJ/m2 (Pr const.) respectively. At the same time, measured remained propionate was 11.86±0.08 mmol/L (Pr rise) and 11.67±0.08 mmol/L (Pr const.). From these results, keep constant 12 mmol/L of propionate addition is proper acclimation method compared with gradually increasing way.
Egg Laying Capacity of Haplorchis taichui (Digenea: Heterophyidae) in Humans
Megumi Sato,Surapol Sanguankiat,Somchit Pubampen,Teera Kusolsuk,Wanna Maipanich,Jitra Waikagul 대한기생충학열대의학회 2009 The Korean Journal of Parasitology Vol.47 No.3
Quantitative fecal egg counts represented as the number of eggs per gram of feces (EPG) are generally a reliable parameter to estimate the worm burden of intestinal and hepatic parasitoses. Although Haplorchis taichui (Digenea: Heterophyidae) is one of the most common minute human intestinal flukes, little is known about the relationship between EPG and the actual worm burden in patients or the severity of the disease. In the present study, fecal samples were collected from 25 villagers in northern Thailand before and after praziquantel treatment. The EPG values of each participant were determined by the modified cellophane thick smear method, and adult worms were collected from the whole stool after the treatment. Eggs per day per worm (EPDPW) of H. taichui were estimated 82 from egg counts and expelled worms. The EPG was not well correlated with the worm burden, and a reverse correlation was observed between the EPDPW and the worm burden.
Expansions of ₄F₃ When the Upper Parameters Differ by Integer
Megumi Saigo ...et al KYUNGPOOK UNIVERSITY 1998 Kyungpook mathematical journal Vol.38 No.2
In this article three expansion formulas for a generalized hypergeometric function ₄F₃ are derived, when its upper parameters differ by integers. Though the results are special cases of a general continuation formula for (p)_F_(q), they are suffciently general and unify a number of known results.
