The levels of tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2) in synovial fluid (SF) and serum in cases of canine osteoarthritis (OA) were measured. OA was induced by a surgically-created medial patellar luxation in the left stifle of 24 dogs. SF and blood samples were collected at 1.5- and 3-month intervals, respectively. Every 3 months, one dog was euthanatized to collect tissue samples from both stifles. TRAP levels in SF and serum were measured using a spectrophotometer, and TRAP-positive cells in joint tissues were identified by enzyme histochemistry. MMP-2 and TIMP-2 in SF and serum were detected by Western blotting and ELISA, respectively. TRAP in SF from the stifles and serum was significantly increased (p < 0.05) after 3 months. TIMP-2 in SF and serum was significantly decreased (p < 0.05), whereas MMP-2 in SF was significantly increased (p < 0.05) during the progression of OA. Histochemistry revealed an increased number of TRAP-positive cells in tissues from OA-affected joints. Assays measuring TRAP, MMP-2, and TIMP-2 in SF and serum, and methods that detect increased numbers of TRAP-positive cells in the joint tissues can play an important role in identifying the early phases of degenerative changes in canine joint components.

Acidosis conditions either acute or chronic following ingestion of excessive amounts of readily fermentedcarbohydrate are great production problems for goat in Bangladesh. This study designed to investigate the prevalenceof lactic acidosis and then response to different therapeutic agents. For this purpose, 1,128 goat were examined atoutdoor District Veterinary Hospital, Faridpur, Bangladseh for treatment of which 40 goats were found positive forlactic acidosis showing 3.55% prevalence of disease. The highest occurrence found in female (4.64%) of over 3 yearsage (4.64%) in indigenous goat (2.7%). For therapeutic assessment the forty affected goats were divided into fourgroups A, B, C and D comprising of 10 animals each. Group A were given magnesium hydroxide 8% w/v at 1 g/kg body weight orally. In group B magnesium hydroxide 8% w/v at a dose as group A combination with 7.5% sodiumbicarbonate at the rate of 0.9 ml/Kg body weight intravenously administered. Goat in group D were treated with mixtureof ginger, nuxvomica, sodium carbonate, cobalt sulphate, dried ferrous sulphate and thiamin mononitrate at the rateof 1 g/kg body weight orally. Goat of group C treated with combination drugs of group A, B and D. The rectaltemperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, was performed before and after treatment. It was found that the highest recoveryin group C with an average period of 21 ± 1.8 hours. It was concluded that lactic acidosis is a common disease ofgoats and its severity can be effectively reduced by using combination drugs.
Strain Dependent Performance Analysis of InGaN Multi-junction Solar Cell

This study reports the strain-dependent efficiency of the InGaN-based multi-junction solar cell (MJSC) for the first time. The route of strain in MJSC is identifi ed to be the results of dissimilar lattice constants between layers of sub-cell grown epitaxially with bandgap stepping. Utilising multi-layered strain model, the state of strain and its magnitude is evaluated for three types of MJSC structures referred to as MJSC-1, MJSC-2, and MJSC-3. It is found that the MJSC position-dependent strain is strongly dependent on the sub-cell thickness as well as on the number of sub-cells. Employing the MJSC position-dependent strain in combination with deformation potentials, strain-induced energy bandgap is calculated when imposed under tensile strain condition. Finally, the strain-dependent efficiencies of different MJSC structures are estimated and obtained to be lower with that of reported with strain effects over sighted. The loss of efficiency is identifi ed to be due to the open circuit voltage which decreases under tensile strain condition. Among the MJSC structures studied here, MJSC-3 with 7-layers is less efficient and its efficiency decreases up to 3.01% when strain effect is taken into consideration.

Acidovorax citrulli (A. citrulli) strain causes bacterial fruit blotch (BFB) in cucurbit crops and watermelon, is an economically devastating disease in watermelon. Molecular characterization of causal strains and identification of sources of resistance are essential to control this important disease. BFB were identified by partial sequencing and documented in GenBank. Recently, there was an outbreak of BFB strain NIHHS16-088 in watermelon fields (North Jeolla Province, South Korea) that severely hampered watermelon production in Korea. Therefore, we characterized NIHHS16-088 by partially sequencing the 16S rRNA gene using PCR-based markers. The partial sequence of the 16S rRNA gene of NIHHS16-088 was much more similar to A. citrulli strains allied with watermelon and melon hosts than other cucurbit hosts. A PCR-based assay identified the strain (NIHHS16-088) as belonging to A. citrulli group II, which mostly infects watermelon cucurbits (virulent to watermelon). Seventy watermelon accessions were screened against NIHHS16-088 in a detached-leaf inoculation assay. The lack of visible disease symptoms 12 days after inoculation in lines SNKW41 and SNKW85 indicated these to be highly resistant, whereas moderate resistance was observed in SNKW60, SNKW61, SNKW103 and SNKW104. The characterized A. citrulli strain NIHHS16-088 (group II) and identified resistant lines will assist as a precious resource for further genetic studies and development of BFB resistance in watermelon.
An accidental fatal attack on domestic pigeons by honey bees in Bangladesh

<P>Fatalities among avian species due to multiple bee stings are rare. Sixteen pigeons on a farm in Bangladesh each suffered multiple bee stings. Ten of the pigeons died before treatment, 5 (4–11 stings) died within 12 hr after treatment, and 1 pigeon (only 3 stings) survived. Body temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, hematocrit, hemoglobin, erythrocytes, thrombocytes, MCV, MCH and MCHC decreased significantly after the incident, but leucocytes, heterophils, basophils, eosinophils, monocytes, ALT, AST, LDH, CK, creatinine, BUN and UA increased markedly. Overall, the hematological and biochemical changes in the bee-stung pigeons were similar to those of mammals; however, avian species may be more sensitive to bee stings than mammals.</P>

<P>A nanocomposite of TiO2 nanoparticle with an electroactive poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP) was synthesized via a simple surface thiol-lactam initiated radical polymerization upon grafting from protocol. This can be achieved through the primary modification of the TiO2 surface with a silane coupling agent leading to thiol functionalized TiO2 (TiO2-SH). Subsequently, a controlled radical polymerization of 4-vinylpyridine in the presence of TiO2-SH and butyrolactam afforded PVP-g-TiO2 nanocomposites. The grafting of PVP on the surface of TiO2 was confirmed by FT-IR, TGA, XPS, EDX, TEM and SEM analyses. The UV-vis studies of the synthesized PVP-g-TiO2 nanocomposite demonstrated an exceptionally good dispersibility in organic solvents.</P>

<P>A facile synthetic route has been developed for the covalent grafting of biocompatible poly(lactic acid) (PLA) onto CdSe Quantum Dots (QDs) using surface initiated ring opening polymerization (ROP) to afford CdSe-g-PLA nanocomposites. At first, 2-mercaptoethanol (ME) capped CdSe QDs were synthesized through a wet chemical process. The surface initiated ROP of lactide was accomplished with Sn(Oct)2 to give CdSe-g-PLA nanocomposites having surface hydroxyl functionality. FT-IR data suggested that a robust covalent bond was formed between ME capped CdSe QDs and polymer moieties. The grafting density of PLA on CdSe QDs was found to be moderate as measured by TGA analysis. The CdSe QDs were well dispersed in CdSe-g-PLA nanocomposites matrices as captured by TEM. The cubic phase crystal structure of CdSe QDs in the nanocomposites was determined by XRD. The optical properties of the CdSe-g-PLA nanocomposites were investigated by UV-vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy which suggested their potentialities as optical materials in biomedical application. Cell viability studies revealed that the biocompatibility of CdSe QDs was improved upon PLA immobilization.</P>
