        Tau function and Chern-Simons invariant

McIntyre, A.,Park, J. Academic Press ; Elsevier Science B.V. Amsterdam 2014 Advances in mathematics Vol.262 No.-

We define a Chern-Simons invariant for Schottky hyperbolic 3-manifolds of infinite volume. We then prove an expression relating the Bergman tau function on a fiber space over the Teichmuller space to the lifting of the function F defined by Zograf on Teichmuller space, and a holomorphic function on this space which we introduce. If the point in this space corresponds to a marked Riemann surface X, then this function is constructed from the renormalized volume and our Chern-Simons invariant for the bounding 3-manifold of X given by Schottky uniformization, together with a regularized Polyakov integral. We also obtain a relation between the Chern-Simons invariant and the eta invariant of the bounding 3-manifold, with defect given by the phase of the Bergman tau function of X.

      • Constraining and Enabling Creativity: The Theoretical Ideas Surrounding Creativity, Agency and Structure

Phillip McIntyre 대한사고개발학회 2012 The International Journal of Creativity & Problem Vol.22 No.1

Sternberg and Kaufman have written that ‘constraints do not necessarily harm creative potential – indeed they are built into the construct of creativity itself’ (2010, p. 481). This paper will take this assertion and apply it to what Anthony Giddens (1976) has labelled one of the central problems in social theory, that is, the relationship between agency, an individual’s ability to make choice, and structure, those things seen to determine behaviour. This relationship has been explored extensively by sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1977, 1990, 1993 and 1996) in regard to cultural production. It is implicitly carried in the systems model of creativity developed within psychology (Csikszentmihalyi 1988, 1990, 1997, 1999), as the author has argued in other papers (McIntyre 2008, 2008a, 2009, 2009a). This paper will explore this issue in relation to the notion of freedom, as depicted by the philosopher David Hume (1952), how this notion relates to the conditions of creativity as conventionally seen in Romantic accounts and how this construct is typified in other more rationally focused views of creativity. In doing this the paper will analyse, critique, and synthesize existing literature on creativity and cultural production, specifically that concerned with the theoretical ideas surrounding creativity, agency and structure.

      • DOMESTIC VERSUS CROSS-BORDER ALLIANCES: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF RELATIONSHIP DIFFERENCES

        Faye S McIntyre,Joyce A Young,Faye W Gilbert People&Global Business Association 1997 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.2 No.2

International alliances predominate the literature (Terpstra and Simonin 1993), even though almost one-half of strategic alliances formed by U.S. firms in the late 1980s involved domestic partners (Culpan and Kostelac 1993). This study compares domestic and cross-border alliances in two areas: the structural framework (linkage, form, mode, coverage, and motive) and performance (perceived effectiveness) of the relationship. The findings indicate that though significant differences exist in the structural framework of domestic and cross-border alliances, these differences do not precipitate divergent levels of relationship effectiveness. Alliances, regardless of partner origin, appear effective at meeting the expectations created by such a cooperative venture.

Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating: A Role for the Expert Patient?

Harold David McIntyre 대한당뇨병학회 2014 Diabetes and Metabolism Journal Vol.38 No.2

The Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) programme of intensive insulin therapy for type 1 diabetes provides a structured educational intervention to improve glycemic control, reduce hypoglycemia and improve quality of life. Enhancement of self—management skills is a key element of DAFNE and patients acquire detailed skills in insulin dose adjustment. Following DAFNE training, patients report improved confidence in their ability to manage their own insulin dosing, but generally still seek and require the assistance of health professionals when making substantial changes to their insulin regimens. Some DAFNE trained patients may be able to assist their peers in aspects of diabetes management within a group environment, but widespread introduction of the expert patient/peer educator role in the self-management of type 1 diabetes, in particular related to insulin dose management, would require formal and detailed evaluation, preferably in randomized controlled clinical trials, before being introduced into routine clinical practice.

Atomic Layer Deposition of Ultrathin Metal-Oxide Films for Nano-Scale Device Applications

김형섭,Paul McIntyre 한국물리학회 2006 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.48 No.I

With continuous dimensional scaling of high-performance transistors, high-k dielectrics are emerging as a very important research area in Si-based FET (field effect transistor) devices. Additionally, due to the uniquely high film quality, easy thickness controllability down to the nm range, and near perfect conformality, the ALD (atomic layer deposition) technique is also emerging as a future deposition technique for various applications. By combining these two promising areas, it is quite possible to open new application areas besides that of Si-based FETs which is under worldwide study. Recently developed Ge- and GaAs-based transistors with ALD high-k dielectrics have exhibited very promising electrical results, with surface passivation methods showing the possibility to further increase transistor performance. In addition, top-gated molecular devices, such as carbon nanotube and Ge nanowire transistors, were successfully developed with the help of ALD high-k dielectrics. Various other possible applications of ALD high-k dielectrics have also been suggested in this paper.

Health-seeking behaviour, views and preferences of adults with suspected increased intestinal permeability: A cross-sectional survey of Australian adults

        Leech Bradley,McIntyre Erica,Steel Amie,Sibbritt David 한국한의학연구원 2022 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.11 No.1

Background: The public health consequence of increased intestinal permeability (IP) is currently limited by the lack of patient-centred research. This study aims to describe the health-seeking behaviour of Australian adults with suspected IP. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 589 Australian adults who have been diagnosed with IP or have suspected (undiagnosed) IP. Results: The majority (56.2%) of participants with suspected IP reported self-diagnosing their condition, with the majority (56.7%) of these participants preferring to be assessed using an accurate method by a general practitioner or naturopath. On average, Australian adults with suspected IP spent 11.1 (95% CI: 9.5, 12.8) years between first suspecting IP and receiving a formal diagnosis. Over the previous 12 months, participants spent an average of $699 on consultation fees, $2176 on dietary supplements for the treatment of IP, and an average of $287 on the assessment of IP. Furthermore, participants who find it difficult to live on their available household income spent significantly more (mean=$2963) on dietary supplements compared to participants who find it easy to live on their available household income ($1918) (p=0.015). Conclusion: The investigation of Australian adults with suspected IP found the majority of participants experienced a considerable length of time between first suspecting IP and receiving a diagnosis of IP. The out-of-pocket expenditure associated with the management of IP suggests a financial burden for people with suspected IP. The results of this study provide novel patient-centred considerations that can be used to inform a clinical practice guideline for the management of IP.

      • Association of treatment response with obesity and other metabolic risk factors in adults with depressive disorders: Results from a National Depression Cohort study in Korea (the CRESCEND study)

        Woo, Young Sup,McIntyre, Roger S.,Kim, Jung-Bum,Lee, Min-Soo,Kim, Jae-Min,Yim, Hyeon Woo,Jun, Tae-Youn Elsevier 2016 Journal of affective disorders Vol.203 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Background</B></P> <P>Available studies indicate that obesity may exert a moderational effect on antidepressant treatment response. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between treatment response and metabolic abnormalities amongst patients with depressive disorders in a large naturalistic clinical setting.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>A nationwide prospective study was conducted in 18 hospitals in South Korea; 541 depressive patients meeting DSM-IV criteria were recruited. After baseline evaluation, subjects received naturalistic clinician-determined antidepressant interventions. Assessment was performed at baseline and weeks 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24 and 52. Treatment response was defined as a ≥50% reduction from baseline on at least one evaluation point.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>In univariate comparison, the patients who showed insufficient response to antidepressant therapy were more likely to be male, unmarried, unemployed, and obese. After adjusting for baseline variables, male sex (OR=1.82) and obesity (OR=1.55) remained as were significant variables. Stratification of the subjects into one of three groups, i.e. male, pre-menopausal female and post-menopausal female, revealed that males with concurrent metabolic problems, (i.e. the presence of one or more of hypertension, hyperglycemia, or hypercholesterolemia) had significantly higher risk for insufficient response (OR=2.32) and, after adjusting for baseline variables, obesity predicted insufficient response in post-menopausal female (OR=2.41).</P> <P><B>Conclusions</B></P> <P>The presence of metabolic abnormalities in patients with depressive disorders was associated with decreased treatment response to antidepressants. These results underscore the neurobiological relationship between obesity and the central nervous system, and provide empiric evidence supporting stratification of treatment response in depression.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Male sex and obesity predicted poor treatment outcomes in patients treated with antidepressants. </LI> <LI> Male with concurrent metabolic problems had significantly higher risk for poor antidepressant treatment outcomes. </LI> <LI> Obesity predicted insufficient response in post-menopausal female patients with depressive disorders. </LI> </UL> </P>
