Keloid Treatment with High Intensity Focused Radiofrequency: A Case Report

        Cynthia M. McClure,Kaitlin McClure 대한의학레이저학회 2018 MEDICAL LASERS Vol.7 No.2

Keloids and hypertrophic scars are the product of an imbalance in collagenesis and lysis following damage to the skin. A variety of surgical and nonsurgical approaches have been used to treat keloids, but the results have typically been disappointing. High-intensity focused radiofrequency (HiRF) is a novel treatment method for cutaneous conditions, including scar revision; this method involves fractionated radiofrequency (RF) energy being delivered via insulated microneedles at preset depths in the dermis. The present case study assessed treatment of keloids with HiRF. A 27-year-old Caucasian female developed keloids along the jawline following the appearance of pregnancy-related cystic acne. She was treated with two sessions of HiFR at a four-week interval, with three passes at varying depths for each session. Erythema and edema appeared post-treatment but resolved spontaneously. Ten weeks after the final session, significant improvement was noted with high patient satisfaction. While this is only a single case report, the positive result for this difficult-to-treat keloid scar merits further studies with larger populations of keloid sufferers. This unique method of delivery of fractionated RF energy directly into the dermis, under an intact epidermis, using HiFR via insulated microneedles at three decreasing preset depths for each session, may have corrected the imbalance between collagenesis and lysis through induction of the wound healing process. This ‘bottom up’ method of damage delivery and repair might offer better results in keloid scars than the traditional ‘top down’ approach associated with laser treatment.

Shelter effects of porous multi-scale fractal fences

McClure, S.,Kim, J.J.,Lee, S.J.,Zhang, W. Elsevier Scientific Pub. Co 2017 Journal of wind engineering and industrial aerodyn Vol.163 No.-

<P>Rows of trees have been naturally used as wind and snow fences to reduce strong winds, to prevent soil erosion and mitigate snow/sand drifts. Trees, composed of multi-scale fractal structures, modify the airflow through and around them in a complicated manner. This research investigates how engineered porous fences, designed using a typical multi-scale fractal structure, would change the wake characteristics and subsequently reshape the wind shelter effects. A two-dimensional (2D) fractal fence composed of cross-grid type fractal struts, along with an one-dimensional (1D) fractal fence, were tested using a planar particle image velocimetry (Ply) method in a boundary-layer wind tunnel. Wakes and shelter effects of two fractal fences are compared to those of the nonfractal fence model of the same height, length, bottom gap and porosity of 50%. Results of the 2D fractal fence show a clear favorable shelter effect - the extended sheltered area of 1.5-4 times the fence height with the shelter parameter of 0.4, about 70% longer than that of the non-fractal fence provides. Multi-scale fractal fences may potentially be adopted to transform the porous fence design by allowing tuning of the arrangement of struts, an additional set of parameters besides fence height, length and porosity.</P>

A General Discussion of the Criminal Justice Process from a Biblical and Redemptive Perspective

Wesley McClure(웨슬리 맥클루어) 숭실대학교 법학연구소 2017 法學論叢 Vol.37 No.-

The Bible declares that there is no authority except that which God has established. These authorities whether Kings or Governors exist as servants and agents of God for the ultimate good of all people. These authorities also exist to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. The American criminal justice system is a governmental authority which falls within the purview of scripture. As such, it is the agent or servant of God’s responsiblity to reflect the justice, fairness, mercy and forgiveness of God in its enforcement, interpretation and execution of the substantive and procedural criminal laws. Given this theocratic foundation, the criminal justice system must serve the ends and purposes of God and not just man. Over the years, various theories have emerged regarding crime and the function of criminal punishment. While these theories have noble goals such as retribution, societal condemnation, deterrence and rehabilitation of criminals, none of these theories specifically address the “good” of the wrongdoer from a spiritual and redemptive perspective. In other words, the primary motivation for punishment must be focused on changing, the heart of the criminal offender rather than just the outward physical behavior. A heart change brings redemption which is God’s ultimate purpose for humanity. 1 Samuel 16:7 expresses this point. “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Without addressing the spiritual condition of the wrongdoer, the criminal justice system cannot fully serve or act in accordance with its divine agency and mission for which God established it. Therefore, the true paradigm of the criminal justice system must emphasize helping the criminal offender realize divine redemption in God.

      • Seismic interactions between suspended ceilings and nonstructural partition walls

        Huang, Wen-Chun,McClure, Ghyslaine,Hussainzada, Nahidah Techno-Press 2013 Coupled systems mechanics Vol.2 No.4

This study aims at observing the coupling behaviours between suspended ceilings and partition walls in terms of their global seismic performance using full-scale shake table tests. The suspended ceilings with planar dimensions of $6.0m{\times}3.6m$ were tested with two types of panels: acoustic lay-in and metal clip-on panels. They were further categorized as seismic-braced, seismic-unbraced, and non-seismic installations. Also, two configurations of 2.7 m high partition wall specimens, with C-shape and I-shape in the plane layouts, were tested. In total, seven ceiling-partition-coupling (CPC) specimens were tested utilizing a unidirectional seismic simulator. The test results indicate that the damage patterns of the tested CPC systems included failure of the ceiling grids, shearing-off of the wall top railing, and, most destructively, numerous partial detachments and falling of the ceiling panels. The loss of panels was mostly concentrated near the center of the tested partition wall. The testing results also confirmed that the failure mode of the non-seismic CPC systems was brittle: The whole system would collapse suddenly all at once when the magnitude of the inputs hit the capacity threshold, rather than displaying progressive damage. Overall, the seismic capacity of the unbraced and braced CPC systems could be up to 1.23 g and 2.67 g, respectively; these accelerations were both achieved at the base of the partition wall. Nonetheless, for practical applications, it is noteworthy that the three-dimensional nature of seismic excitations and the size effect of the ceiling area are parameters that exacerbate the CPC's seismic response so that their actual capacity may be dramatically decreased, leading to important losses even in moderate seismic events.

      • Light Induced Carbon Dioxide Reduction by Water at Binuclear ZrOCoII Unit Coupled to Ir Oxide Nanocluster Catalyst

Kim, Wooyul,Yuan, Guangbi,McClure, Beth Anne,Frei, Heinz American Chemical Society 2014 JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY - Vol.136 No.31

<P>An all-inorganic polynuclear unit consisting of an oxo-bridged binuclear ZrOCoII group coupled to an iridium oxide nanocluster (IrO<I>x</I>) was assembled on an SBA-15 silica mesopore surface. A photodeposition method was developed that affords coupling of the IrO<I>x</I> water oxidation catalyst with the Co donor center. The approach consists of excitation of the ZrOCoII metal-to-metal charge-transfer (MMCT) chromophore with visible light in the presence of [Ir(acac)3] (acac: acetylacetonate) precursor followed by calcination under mild conditions, with each step monitored by optical and infrared spectroscopy. Illumination of the MMCT chromophore of the resulting ZrOCoII–IrO<I>x</I> units in the SBA-15 pores loaded with a mixture of 13CO2 and H2O vapor resulted in the formation of 13CO and O2 monitored by FT-IR and mass spectroscopy, respectively. Use of 18O labeled water resulted in the formation of 18O2 product. This is the first example of a closed photosynthetic cycle of carbon dioxide reduction by water using an all-inorganic polynuclear cluster featuring a molecularly defined light absorber. The observed activity implies successful competition of electron transfer between the IrO<I>x</I> catalyst cluster and the transient oxidized Co donor center with back electron transfer of the ZrOCo light absorber, and is further aided by the instant desorption of the CO and O2 product from the silica pores.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jacsat/2014/jacsat.2014.136.issue-31/ja504753g/production/images/medium/ja-2014-04753g_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ja504753g'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Phylogenetic analysis of the swine leukocyte antigen - 2 gene for Korean native pigs

        Hoyoung Chung,Matthew McClure,Jaeyoung Kim 한국유전학회 2011 Genes & Genomics Vol.33 No.4

The objective of this study was to investigate genetic relationships of the SLA-2 gene, to characterize SLA-2 alleles, and to provide basic genetic information of Korean pigs. The swine leukocyte antigen - 2 (SLA-2) gene in the MHC classical region was cloned with spleen tissues from Korean native pigs selected from the main land (KNP) and Jeju Island (KJP). Primer sequences based on swine cDNA (GenBank accession numbers AF464049 and AF464005) were used to amplify the entire SLA-2 gene, and the amplification product including both 3’ and 5’ UTRs was sized 1,520 bp. A BAC clone was selected from miniature pigs and sequenced for the genomic region of the SLA-2 gene showing that 4,585 bp in total length consisted of exons (1,087 bp) and introns (3,498 bp). A sequence analysis confirmed 58 SNPs in coding regions, which revealed higher numbers of SNPs in KNP than other pig breeds, implicating more genetic variability in Korean pigs. Approximately 82% of the SLA-2 SNPs were located in the highly polymorphic exons 2 and 3. Newly identified sequences of the SLA-2 gene for KNP and KJP were submitted into the IPD-MHC database with new nomenclatures (SLA-2*1501,SLA-2*1601, and SLA-2*w08hy01 allele), while the representative sequences of KNP and KJP were submitted into GenBank with accession numbers (DQ992495, DQ992496,and DQ992501), respectively. The identified KNP allele (SLA-2*1501) clustered with previously defined alleles for Korean pigs (SLA-2*kn02 and SLA-2*jh01), but SLA-2*1601(KNP) and SLA-2*w08hy01 (KJP) alleles showed no significant genetic relationships with any other allele. A sequence comparison revealed that KNP has departed from KJP both genetically and phenotypically. The results of SLA-2 SNP in KNP and KJP reported here will serve as the SLA-2 reference for Korean pigs.

CFD-FSI simulation of vortex-induced vibrations of a circular cylinder with low mass-damping

        Borna, Amir,Habashi, Wagdi G.,McClure, Ghyslaine,Nadarajah, Siva K. Techno-Press 2013 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.16 No.5

A computational study of vortex-induced transverse vibrations of a cylinder with low mass-damping is presented. An Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation of the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (URANS), along with the Spalart-Allmaras (SA) one-equation turbulence model, are coupled conservatively with rigid body motion equations of the cylinder mounted on elastic supports in order to study the amplitude and frequency response of a freely vibrating cylinder, its flow-induced motion, Vortex Street, near-wake flow structure, and unsteady loading in a moderate range of Reynolds numbers. The time accurate response of the cylinder from rest to its limit cycle is studied to explore the effects of Reynolds number on the start of large displacements, motion amplitude, and frequency. The computational results are compared with published physical experiments and numerical studies. The maximum amplitudes of displacements computed for various Reynolds numbers are smaller than the experimental values; however, the overall agreement of the results is quite satisfactory, and the upper branch of the limit-cycle displacement amplitude vs. reduced velocity response is captured, a feature that was missed by other studies. Vortex shedding modes, lock-in phenomena, frequency response, and phase angles are also in agreement with experiments.
