Preliminary Study on In-Situ Modulus Measurement Using Knocking Ball test; A Case Study on Setul Limestone

        Mazlina Razali,Mohd Ashraf Mohamad Ismail,Andrew Lee Kwan Yee,Raja Asyraf Azizan Raja Adnan,Kenichi Kawano,Kensuke Date,Yasuhiro Yokota,Sharan Kumar Nagendran,Zuraini Zainal 대한토목학회 2023 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.27 No.8

The in-situ elastic modulus (E) is a vital parameter for describing rock strength in many engineering projects on rock slopes. The elastic modulus and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) are typically investigated via laboratory tests using core samples. However, the direct determination of E is costly and time-consuming in preparing many intact samples from highly weathered Setul limestone. The knocking ball testing method is a non-destructive test that can quickly and easily obtain the elastic modulus of rock in-situ by striking the surface of a rock mass with a spherical steel hammer. This study presents the relationship between the elastic modulus of knocking ball (Ekb) and the uniaxial compressive strength of the Schmidt hammer (UCS-Schmidt). Results show that the regression coefficient correlation, R2 is 0.851, indicating a positive trend with a few outliers. The measured Ekb were also verified with mineral propertiesand correlated to differential weathering grades to confirm the accuracy of measurement results. The finding compared to previous similar studies tested on several types of rock show a statistically significant. This research highlights the effectiveness of the knocking ball method for determining the modulus of rock slope at different weathering grades. A high elastic modulus corresponds to a high uniaxial compressive strength, verified by the laboratory test. This study shows that the knocking ball can be useful for predicting in-situ elastic modulus.

Merintis Pengalaman Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran Dalam Talian Semester Pandemik COVID-19: Satu Perkongsian

        Mazlina Ahmad,조민성 한국외국어대학교 동남아연구소 2023 東南亞硏究 Vol.33 No.1

National education has experienced a drastic 360-degree change as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the new norm of online teaching and learning (TnL) has raised the importance of using information and communication technology (ITC), mobile devices such as laptops and mobile phones with internet networks and home-based learning. This paper reviews the online PdP experience that students of the Diploma of Fisheries, UMT, Semester D202021-1 (Semester COVID-19) have gone through for the university's core course BBB3105 (Thinking Skills). The goal is towards continuous improvement and consolidation of knowledge to implement further online TnC. In the stress of the pandemic semester, the research applied case study methods with questionnaire instruments and text analysis to obtain data concerning student’s experience from 137 students. A questionnaire using Google Form was delivered to students through sharing their WhatsApp group link in week 14. Supporting data from student comments is also taken from the lecturers' teaching evaluation e-SPP results generated at the end of the semester. The data was analyzed descriptively with percentage values while the student's notes data was analyzed using content analysis and categorized according to theme using the thematic analysis method. The results of the study show the encouraging ability of students in following TnC online because they are among the generation of the information technology era, namely the Net generation (Gen-Z) who are digitally literate. Continuous improvement is detected focusing on three aspects which are the application of interactive game activities; internet accessibility; as well as a surge of self-motivation. Therefore, the experience of students pioneering the online TnC route during the COVID-19 pandemic semester should be used as the basis for further continuous improvement to ensure the readiness of graduates that is relevant to current needs and developments.

Financial Integration?Growth Nexus: A Quantile Regression Analysis

        ( Saifuzzaman Ibrahim ),( A. R Mazlina ),( W. N. W Azman-saini ),( Muhammad Farhan Mahamad Zakaria ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 2016 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.31 No.3

Our study aims to examine the role of economic development in moderating the relationship between international financial integration and economic growth, and we find that international financial integration has a positive impact on economic growth by and large. However, the growth impact of international financial integration does not exist in countries where economic development is too low or in highly developed countries. This suggests that policy makers, especially in developing countries, should ensure the presences of capabilities in order to gain from the financial market integration. The method involves a quantile regression technique on cross-sectional data of 73 countries.

The Role of Intelligence (IQ) on The Globalization-Income Inequality Nexus: A Threshold Regression Approach

        Saifuzzaman IBRAHIM,A. R. MAZLINA,W. N. W. AZMAN-SAINI,Nik Ahmad Sufian BURHAN 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.12

Globalization is an economic process responsible for the increase of interdependence of world economies. It enhances the mobility of national resources internationally via the integration of markets, trade and investments with minimal barriers to slow the flow of products and services. Although globalization has some positive impacts on the economy, it is said to be a factor in the decline of income inequality of the participating countries. However, the results of previous studies on the relationship between globalization and income inequality are inconclusive. This suggests that there are other factors influencing the relationship between the two variables. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of intelligence (IQ) in the globalization-income inequality relationship. This study employs the threshold regression technique and cross-nation observations from 117 sample nations for the period 1980–2016. The results show that the impact of globalization on income inequality in a nation relies on its IQ level. The results imply that economic globalization has a negative impact on income inequality in nations with lower IQ levels. It widens the gap between the poor and rich. While in nations with higher IQ levels, it seems to not have any significant impact on income distribution.

Effectiveness and Challenges in Online Teaching and Learning for Malay Language in Korea

        Cho Min Sung(조민성),Mazlina Ahmad(마즐리나 아흐마드) 한국아시아학회 2022 아시아연구 Vol.25 No.4

The global spread of COVID-19 since 2019 has had a powerful impact on the system and the teaching and learning process in levels of education, whether at the primary, secondary or tertiary levels, specifically in universities. The non-face-to-face study involving virtual or online study programs has now become the norm to replace conventional study approaches (face-to-face) in the lecture room. The Basic Malay Language Course, a competency or language skills course, also concerns online teaching and learning. Accordingly, this research endeavoured to explain the student achievement for Malay Language Course during the COVID-19 pandemic and the teaching and learning strategies that lecturers operate in the online teaching and learning method. The studys conclusions validated that online learning limits all activities or practices. Students engagement in discussion or conversation activities also becomes minimal, specifically for pair or group activities. Pronunciation practices become problematic; speech and reading practices do not transpire smoothly and effectively. It has also influenced students skills and achievements. The researcher hopes this analysis can guide all lecturers, especially those involved in Malay Language Course teaching and learning as a foreign language either in Korea or abroad. A sagacious teaching and learning approach guarantees that students achieve better Malay language proficiency.

Calixarenes as Host Molecules for Drug Carriers in the Cosmetic and Medical Field

        Wong Yeong Yi,Faridah Lisa Supian,Mazlina Musa,Nur Farah Nadia Abd Karim,Abdullah F. Naim 한국고분자학회 2022 Macromolecular Research Vol.30 No.12

Calixarenes are macrocyclic molecules with unique three-dimensional structures, shaped like a cup with a hydrophobic upper rim and a hydrophilic lower rim surrounding a hollow cavity. Calixarenes are frequently studied as the host system and used as nanosensors in drug carrier as well as drug delivery system application. This is due to the characteristics of calixarenes as well as their derivatives, which can interact and form composite nanomaterials with ions and neutral species, including metal and non-metal. The ease of calixarenes to be synthesized and functionalized at various sites is the main reason of their widely use in different applications. This review article focuses on the structures, properties of calixarenes and their host-guest interaction with guest molecules, according to previous experimental researches as well as review studies that had been carried out. The applications of calixarenes in cosmetic and medical fields for the recent ten years are discussed. Drugs can be loaded into calixarenes by encapsulation and host-guest interactions. This contributes to the different applications, including the medical and cosmetic fields with low cytotoxicity and no haemolytic activity, which are crucial for safety purposes. Their great potential and contributions in these fields have been shown, which may be utilized in the future studies of supramolecular chemistry.

      • The Trend of Body Mass Index (BMI) Changes among Malaysian Children and the Prediction at 48 Months Old

Aslina Saad,Suzani Samuri,Bahbibi Rahmatullah,Mazlina Che Mustafa The Pacific Early Childhood Education Research Ass 2021 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhoo Vol.15 No.2

Overweight and underweight are common issues among children in Malaysia and thus, Malaysian government has launched several campaigns to combat these problems. Previous research show that BMI at certain age could be predicted earlier so that early intervention can be initiate. Most of the study are very specific to some locality and certain ethnic, make it hard to generalize to the whole Malaysian. This research aims to investigate significant positive predictors of changes in Body Mass Index (BMI) of young children aged from 12 months to 48 months and to develop a prediction model for their BMI status (normal, overweight, obese, risk of overweight, underweight, and severe underweight). Data consisting of 558 records with 16 attributes involving 18,226 children, who had registered at the National Child Data Centre (NCDC) were analyzed and predicted using the decision tree algorithms of Rapid miner. The BMI of 48 months-old children can be reliably predicted by their BMI statuses at the ages of 21, 24, 27, 36, 42, and 45 months, parents’ incomes, and gender while the BMI at the age of 20 months and below are the negative predictors. The prediction model developed in this study may help practitioners to monitor such children’s BMI, especially in detecting the signs of severe overweight, obesity, and underweight among such children. Such a BMI prediction model can be used to identify young children who are at risk of being overweight, obese, and underweight such that remedial interventions can be implemented promptly.
