Remittances and Business Cycles: Comparison of South Asian Countries
Mazhar Y. Mughal,Junaid Ahmed 한국국제경제학회 2014 International Economic Journal Vol.28 No.4
South Asia is one of the world's principal remittance-receiving regions. This study examines the home and host business cycles of migrant remittance flows to the region. Employing the Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR) technique, the remittance behaviour of the region's four main countries is compared. Remittances to India and Pakistan show a mainly acyclical behaviour with respect to the output of the four host regions, and a countercyclical behaviour with respect to home output. In contrast, remittances to the two smaller economies of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are found to be mainly procyclical. The study shows that the macroeconomic remittance behaviour varies with respect to the importance of remittance flows in the home economy. Moreover, remittance behaviour seems to respond more to home economy specificities than to those of the different regions that host the migrants from the developing countries.
Iris Image Enhancement for the Recognition of Non-ideal Iris Images
( Mazhar Sajjad ),( Chang-won Ahn ),( Jin-woo Jung ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2016 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.10 No.4
Iris recognition for biometric personnel identification has gained much interest owing to the increasing concern with security today. The image quality plays a major role in the performance of iris recognition systems. When capturing an iris image under uncontrolled conditions and dealing with non-cooperative people, the chance of getting non-ideal images is very high owing to poor focus, off-angle, noise, motion blur, occlusion of eyelashes and eyelids, and wearing glasses. In order to improve the accuracy of iris recognition while dealing with non-ideal iris images, we propose a novel algorithm that improves the quality of degraded iris images. First, the iris image is localized properly to obtain accurate iris boundary detection, and then the iris image is normalized to obtain a fixed size. Second, the valid region (iris region) is extracted from the segmented iris image to obtain only the iris region. Third, to get a well-distributed texture image, bilinear interpolation is used on the segmented valid iris gray image. Using contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) enhances the low contrast of the resulting interpolated image. The results of CLAHE are further improved by stretching the maximum and minimum values to 0-255 by using histogram-stretching technique. The gray texture information is extracted by 1D Gabor filters while the Hamming distance technique is chosen as a metric for recognition. The NICE-II training dataset taken from UBRIS.v2 was used for the experiment. Results of the proposed method outperformed other methods in terms of equal error rate (EER).

A dimeric precursor, $[Cu(dmae)(OCOCH_3)(H_2O)]_2$ for the CVD of copper metal films, (dmaeH = N,N-dimethylaminoethanol) was synthesized by the reaction of copper(II) acetate monohydrate ($Cu(OCOCH_3)_2{\cdot}H_2O$) and dmaeH in toluene. The product was characterized by m.p. determination, elemental analysis and X-ray crystallography. Molecular structure of $[Cu(dmae)(OCOCH_3)(H_2O)]_2$ shows that a dimeric unit $[Cu(dmae)(OCOCH_3)(H_2O)]_2$ is linked to another through hydrogen bond and it undergoes facile decomposition at 300 C to deposit granular copper metal film under nitrogen atmosphere. The decomposition temperature, thermal behaviour, kinetic parameters, evolved gas pattern of the complex, morphology, and the composition of the film were also investigated.
