• Transformation as Cognitive Musical Process

Mayo, Walter S. 이화여자대학교 음악대학 1993 音樂藝術論壇 Vol.- No.2

Primary Lymphedema of the Lower Limb: The Clinical Utility of Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography/CT

        Mayo Weiss,Ruediger G.H. Baumeister,Andreas Frick,Jens Wallmichrath,Peter Bartenstein,Axel Rominger 대한영상의학회 2015 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.16 No.1

The aim of this prospective study was to determine whether the additional use of the single photon emission computed tomography/CT (SPECT/CT) technique improves the diagnostic value of planar lymphoscintigraphy in patients presenting with primary lymph edema of the lower limb. For a defined period of three years (April 2011–April 2014) a total of 34 consecutive patients (28 females; age range, 27–83 years) presenting with swelling of the leg(s) suspicious of (uni- or bilateral, proximal or distal) primary lymphedema were prospectively examined by planar lymphoscintigraphy (lower limbs, n = 67) and the tomographic SPECT/CT technique (anatomical sides, n = 65). In comparison to pathological planar scintigraphic findings, the addition of SPECT/CT provided relevant additional information regarding the presence of dermal backflow (86%), the anatomical extent of lymphatic disorders (64%), the presence or absence of lymph nodes (46%), and the visualization of lymph vessels (4%). As an adjunct to planar lymphoscintigraphy, SPECT/CT specifies the anatomical correlation of lymphatic disorders and thus improves assessment of the extent of pathology due to the particular advantages of tomographic separation of overlapping sources. The interpretation of scintigraphic data benefits not only in baseline diagnosis, but also in physiotherapeutical and microsurgical treatments of primary lymphedema.

Postoperative Fever Evaluation Following Lumbar Fusion Procedures

        Benjamin C. Mayo,Brittany E. Haws,Daniel D. Bohl,Philip K. Louie,Fady Y. Hijji,Ankur S. Narain,Dustin H. Massel,Benjamin Khechen,Kern Singh 대한척추신경외과학회 2018 Neurospine Vol.15 No.2

Objective: This study aimed to determine the incidence of postoperative fever, the workup conducted for postoperative fever, the rate of subsequent fever-related diagnoses or complications, and the risk factors associated with fever following lumbar fusion. Methods: A retrospective review of patients undergoing lumbar fusion was performed. For patients in whom fever (≥38.6°C) was documented, charts were reviewed for any fever workup or diagnosis. Multivariate regression was used to identify independent risk factors for the development of postoperative fever. Results: A total of 868 patients met the inclusion criteria, of whom 105 exhibited at least 1 episode of fever during hospitalization. The first documentation of fever occurred during the first 24 hours in 43.8% of cases, during postoperative hours 24–48 in 53.3%, and later than 48 hours postoperatively in 2.9%. At least 1 component of a fever workup was conducted in 47 of the 105 patients who had fever, resulting in fever-associated diagnoses in 4 patients prior to discharge. Three patients who had fever during the inpatient stay developed complications after discharge. On multivariate analysis, operations longer than 150 minutes (relative risk [RR], 1.66; p=0.015) and narcotic consumption greater than 85 oral morphine equivalents on postoperative day 0 (RR, 1.53; p=0.038) were independently associated with an increased risk of developing postoperative fever. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that inpatient fever occurred in roughly 1 in 8 patients following lumbar fusion surgery. In most cases where a fever workup was performed, no cause of fever was detected. Longer operative time and increased early postoperative narcotic use may increase the risk of developing postoperative fever.

      • Atypical viscous fracture of human femurs

        Yosibash, Zohar,Mayo, Romina Plitman,Milgrom, Charles Techno-Press 2014 Advances in biomechanics & applications Vol.1 No.2

Creep phenomenon at the scale of bone tissue (small specimens) is known to be present and demonstrated for low strains. Here creep is demonstrated on a pair of fresh-frozen human femurs at the organ level at high strains. Under a constant displacement applied on femur's head, surface strains at the upper neck location increase with time until fracture, that occurs within 7-13 seconds. The monotonic increase in strains provides evidence on damage accumulation in the interior (probably damage to the trabeculae) prior to final fracture, a fact that hints on probable damage of the trabecular bone that occurs prior to the catastrophic fracture of the cortical surface layer.

Response to rearing in laboratory of the xylophagous grape pest, Xylotrechus arvicola (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae)

        Álvaro Rodríguez‐González,Sara MAYO,Óscar GONZÁLEZ-LÓPEZ,Horacio J. PELÁEZ,Pedro A. CASQUERO 한국곤충학회 2017 Entomological Research Vol.47 No.4

Xylotrechus arvicola (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is an important pest in vineyards (Vitis vinifera) in the main Iberian wine‐producing regions. Larvae were reared with Semi‐Synthetic Iglesias (SSI) diet over 27 months and two generations in the laboratory. Larval mortality was highest during the first (49.49 %) and second (9.38 %) month of rearing, increasing to 50.52 % during the first month if F2 reared larvae were obtained from an F1 adult female obtained in laboratory. The diet had sufficient nutrients to enable the pest to complete its life cycle within nine months, with F1 larval viability ranging from 23.49 % to 27.97 % and F2 larval viability reduced to 2.07 %. However, the diet did not allow for the completion of additional life cycles and generations (F3, F4,…). Larval mortality increased as the months of rearing (66.13 %, 69.51 % and 89.50 %) and generations (59.10 % and 76.93 % in F1 and F2, respectively) progressed in the laboratory. The larva–adult period of females obtained in the laboratory was longer than for males. In the laboratory, the life cycle was shortened in relation to the life cycle in the field because larvae did not require a cold period to break diapause and start pupation. This indicates that X. arvicola has the potential to complete its life cycle inside grape wood in vineyards of wine‐producing regions with warmer winters.

      • Alternative Nanostructures for Thermophones

        Aliev, Ali E.,Mayo, Nathanael K.,Jung de Andrade, Monica,Robles, Raquel O.,Fang, Shaoli,Baughman, Ray H.,Zhang, Mei,Chen, Yongsheng,Lee, Jae Ah,Kim, Seon Jeong American Chemical Society 2015 ACS NANO Vol.9 No.5

Thermophones are highly promising for applications such as high-power SONAR arrays, flexible loudspeakers, and noise cancellation devices. So far, freestanding carbon nanotube aerogel sheets provide the most attractive performance as a thermoacoustic heat source. However, the limited accessibility of large-size freestanding carbon nanotube aerogel sheets and other even more exotic materials recently investigated hampers the field. We describe alternative materials for a thermoacoustic heat source with high-energy conversion efficiency, additional functionalities, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective production technologies. We discuss the thermoacoustic performance of alternative nanostructured materials and compare their spectral and power dependencies of sound pressure in air. We demonstrate that the heat capacity of aerogel-like nanostructures can be extracted by a thorough analysis of the sound pressure spectra. The study presented here focuses on engineering thermal gradients in the vicinity of nanostructures and subsequent heat dissipation processes from the interior of encapsulated thermoacoustic projectors. Applications of thermoacoustic projectors for high-power SONAR arrays, sound cancellation, and optimal thermal design, regarding enhanced energy conversion efficiency, are discussed.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Morphological abnormality rate of the pale grass blue butterfly Zizeeria maha (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) in southwestern Japan: A reference data set for environmental monitoring

        Atsuki Hiyama,Wataru Taira,Mayo Iwasaki,Ko Sakauchi,Masaki Iwata,Joji M. Otaki 한국응용곤충학회 2017 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.20 No.4

Morphological abnormalities of the pale grass blue butterfly, Zizeeria maha (Kollar) (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae), have been successfully used as an environmental indicator to assess the biological impacts of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. To prepare for future nuclear accidents or other human and natural disasters, we examined the morphological abnormality rate of this butterfly in southwestern Japan and built a pre-disaster reference data set. We collected butterfly samples, primarily in summer 2015 from 52 localities, which were categorized into three regional groups associated with the Sendai, Ikata, or Takahama Nuclear Power Plant. Mean values of the abnormality rate and the wing color pattern modification rate for localities were 3.8% and 0.8%, respectively, indicating that butterflies were not under severe anthropogenic stress. Using all collected samples, the abnormality rate of females (7.4%) was significantly higher than that of males (2.8%). We did not detect any significant correlations of the abnormality rate or modification rate with latitude, ground radiation dose, or distance from the nuclear power plants. Based on logistic regression analyses, sex, annual average temperature, and monthly average temperature might have influenced morphological abnormalities, suggesting possible direct and epigenetic temperature effects on morphogenesis. These data serve as a reference data set for future nuclear accidents or other artificial or natural environmental disasters in southwestern Japan.

      • Apatite Formation on Polythylene Modified with Silanols by Grafting of Vinyltrimethoxysilane and Subsequent Hydrolysis

        Kokubo, Tadashi,Uenoyama, Mayo,Kim, Hyun-Min,Minoda, Masahiko,Miyamoto, Takeaki,Nakamura, Takashi The Korean Ceramic Society 1999 The Korean journal of ceramics Vol.5 No.3

Polyethylene was modified with silanol groups on its surface by photografting of vinyltrimethoxysilane in vapor phase by using benzophenon as a polymerization initiator and by hydrolyzing the methoxysilane groups into the silanol groups with HCI solution. The modified polyethylene formed a dense and homogeneous apatite layer on its surface in a solution with ion concentrations 1.5 times those of human blood plasma within 21 days. This kind of biomimetic process could provide techniques for fabricating apatite-polymer composites with three dimensional structure analogous to the natural bone.
