2021 International Journal of Intangible Heritage Vol.16 No.2

      • HOW WRONG CHOICES ELICIT JOYFUL REACTIONS TO RIVAL BRANDS’ FAILURES: THE ROLE OF SELF-THREAT

        Maximilian H. E. E. Gerrath,J. 2018 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2018 No.07

Anecdotal evidence suggests that incidents like the recall of the exploding Samsung Galaxy 7 phones drive owners of other (competing) brands to experience and express feelings of joy when a rival brand fails (e.g., “the hottest phone in the streets!”). Although consumers sometimes experience brand-related schadenfreude—that is, joy out of other brand’s failure—, psychological processes driving schadenfreude are not clearly understood (Hickman & Ward, 2007; Van Dijk, Van Koningsbruggen, Ouwerkerk, & Wesseling, 2011). We propose that schadenfreude may be elicited by consumers’ tendencies to stand by their choices (Ye & Gawronski, 2016). We demonstrate that consumers show higher levels of schadenfreude if their choice is disconfirmed; for example, by a comparative product review that evaluates their chosen brand to be inferior to a rival non-chosen brand. Furthermore, this effect is moderated by the popularity of the chosen brand and mediated by feelings of self-threat. Moreover, we show that this effect is stronger for narcissists. We also find evidence that schadenfreude is a means for consumers to reaffirm their sense of self after they experience a self-threat induced by the disconfirmation of their choice.

Safeguarding ritual practices in the limestone cave areas along the Swahili coast of the Indian Ocean in Tanzania

2021 International Journal of Intangible Heritage Vol.16 No.1

The use management of sacred limestone cave areas that local communities still use for ritual practices provide challenges to the government, because visitors (tourists) and researchers fail to abide by rules established by locals for the sacred areas. This study reveals that the country lacks sufficient guidelines or frameworks for best practices in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage (ICH). The study discovers that there are ritual practices, strict taboos and customary laws put in place by the local communities to control access to cave areas, such as the Kuumbi and Amboni limestone caves, which are sacred to the locals. The habit of visitors and researchers not adhering to the established regulations when visiting caves and their surroundings has created a disconnect between locals and their ritual practices, which prevents them from performing their rituals and other spiritual activities. This article proposes different measures to be adopted by the government to enable local communities to continue using the caves as a crucial part of their religious life without any disturbances. The article further argues that the government consider nominating ritual practices in limestone cave areas for inclusion in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Improved prediction of Pump Turbine Dynamic Behavior using a Thoma number dependent Hill Chart and Site Measurements

Maximilian Manderla,Karl N. Kiniger,Jiri Koutnik 한국유체기계학회 2015 International journal of fluid machinery and syste Vol.8 No.2

Water hammer phenomena are important issues for the design and the operation of hydro power plants. Especially, if several reversible pump-turbines are coupled hydraulically there may be strong unit interactions. The precise prediction of all relevant transients is challenging. Regarding a recent pump-storage project, dynamic measurements motivate an improved turbine modeling approach making use of a Thoma number dependency. The proposed method is validated for several transient scenarios and turns out to improve correlation between measurement and simulation results significantly. Starting from simple scenarios, this allows better prediction of more complex transients. By applying a fully automated simulation procedure broad operating ranges of the highly nonlinear system can be covered providing a consistent insight into the plant dynamics. This finally allows the optimization of the closing strategy and hence the overall power plant performance.

On Shifting a Nation’s Collective Memory: The Role of Ahn Jung-geun in South Korea’s Foreign Policy

2020 Asian Journal of Peacebuilding Vol.8 No.2

This article revisits the role that Ahn Jung-geun plays in Korean collective memory today and contrasts this with the Moon administration’s foreign policy. An analysis of Korean collective memory shows that Ahn’s assassination of Ito Hirobumi is heavily emphasized but Ahn’s ultimate goal of bringing peace to Northeast Asia is overlooked. This emphasis is understood through Jan Assmann’s model of collective memory. Based on Aleida Assmann and Linda Shortt’s proposition, it is argued that the historical figure of Ahn can instead play a constructive role. Shifting the focus of collective memory toward Ahn’s ambition for peace in Northeast Asia may serve as a positive nudge for Seoul’s Japan policy, thus helping to ameliorate Korea-Japan relations in the medium term.

China’s State Capitalism and International Responses: A Comparative Analysis of Infrastructure Investment Strategies

2024 ASIAN PERSPECTIVE Vol.48 No.1

By introducing the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), an international infrastructure investment strategy, China attracted a lot of attention. China’s approach to state capitalism has opened a window of opportunity for other infrastructure investment strategies. In response, the world’s largest and liberally minded economies, such as the United States of America, Japan, and the European Union, have focused on connectivity and embarked on similar strategies. In this article, I conduct a comparative analysis of infrastructure investment strategies. I analyze key tenets of the BRI and international responses through the prism of principles, priorities, funding, financing, governance, and implementation. The comparison of strategies highlights more commonalities than differences, and I identify several instances in which liberal economies act in contradiction to their variety of capitalism. The results suggest that China has opened a window of opportunity for proactive infrastructure investment strategies, and major economies have responded in kind. With overlapping emphases in similar geographic regions, these strategies lead to competition. Consequently, recipient countries profit from an advantageous negotiating position when seeking to attract foreign direct investment in infrastructure projects. Tumor Necrosis Factor-α Gene Signature Is Absent in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells of Patients with Granulomatosis Polyangiitis

Vol.22 No.5

Objective. Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), formally known as Wegener`s granulomatosis, is a systemic vasculitis with necrotizing granulomatous inflammation. As treatment directed against tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α failed in GPA, we investigated whether “TNF-α signature” (i.e. gene expression profile of TNF-α activation) was present in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with GPA. Methods. Gene expression profiling was performed using total RNA from PBMCs of 41 patients with GPA and 23 healthy control subjects using the Illumina microarray technique. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was performed to detect the presence of TNF-α signature using the curated list C2-V3.0 by the Broad Institute. False discovery rate<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results. GSEA did not show significant enrichment of any TNF-αassociated gene sets in GPA. Expression levels of genes up-regulated by TNF-α did not differ between healthy control subjects, patients in remission (Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score [BVAS]=0), and those with active disease (BVAS≥1). In addition, an unsupervised hierarchical clustering of those genes failed to cluster the samples into healthy control subjects and GPA in remission or with active disease. B cell activation signature was enriched in GPA patients. Conclusion. Absence of a TNF-α signature in PBMCs may suggest that TNF-α plays a less important role in the pathogenesis of GPA than previously accepted. (J Rheum Dis 2015;22:293-297)

Emerging adults’ luxury fashion brand value perceptions: A cross-cultural comparison between Germany and China

        Maximilian Faschan,Claude Chailan,Richard Huaman-Ramirez 한국마케팅과학회 2020 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.11 No.3

This paper explores the differences in luxury fashion brand value perceptions between German and Chinese Generation Y’s emerging adults. This study chose Chinese and German young adults aged between 18 and 25 as the primary data source. An online selfadministered questionnaire was selected as data collection method. One hundred and ninety-nine observations were retained. Sample size was deemed sufficient to test our hypotheses based on the most conservative minimum-sample-size methods. The outcomes indicate that the multi-dimensional nature of luxury fashion ascertained in literature appeals to Generation Y’s emerging adults across both countries. However, multiple unexpected crossnational differences regarding the importance attributed to specific value dimensions of luxury fashion are found. Chinese emerging adults have higher socio-symbolic, hedonic, and functional as well as higher price value perceptions of luxury fashion compared to their German peers. This study helps luxury fashion brand managers to attune their customer value propositions to the expectations of Generation Y’s younger cohort members from Germany and China under consideration of cultural particularities. Results suggest that marketing strategies conceived in disregard of cultural dynamics might prevent luxury fashion brands from fully leveraging market potentials across different geographies.
