      • Golf and Skin Health: A Narrative Review

        Allan G. Matthews(Allan G. Matthews ),Hannah Preston(Hannah Preston ),Andrew Murray(Andrew Murray ),Roger Hawkes(Roger Hawkes ) 사피엔시아 2018 Exercise Medicine Vol.2 No.-

Objectives: Recent studies have reported that playing golf has overall physical and mental health benefits. Through being placed in the sun for extended periods of time, the golfing population faces an increased risk of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) associated skin problems, most importantly skin cancer. Our aim was to collate and summarise current literature on the relationship between golf and skin cancer. Methods: We searched multiple web-based, health-focused databases (Medline, Embase, Cinahl, Web of science, Scopus, Sportdiscus, UK clinical trials, Current controlled trials and Prospero) to identify records. Relevant papers were critically appraised and reported using a descriptive analysis. Results: A total of 11 studies are included in the review. Golf is associated with relatively more UVR exposure than other outdoor activities such as fishing, tennis, pool swimming, cricket, gardening, ‘sun-worshipping’ and sailing. Calculated relative risk of non- melanoma skin cancer, based on cumulative UV exposure, is higher in golfers than non-golfers. Mid morning tee-times or playing golf between 11am -3pm associated with highest UVR exposures. Golfers can be exposed to potentially harmful levels of UVR during play in winter at some latitudes. Vertex (scalp), shoulders, back, back of neck and posterior arms exposed to more UVR than front of body during play. Common golf attire is of limited value in protecting the neck. Targeted skin cancer skin cancer prevention and early detection campaigns are well received among the golfing population. Conclusions: Overall, playing golf is associated with longevity and both physical and mental health benefits. Studies to date indicate that golfers (professionals > recreational players) are exposed to potentially harmful levels of UVR during play, but the true morbidity/mortality associated with this exposure is not known. Playing golf should be encouraged in all age groups, though golfers, the golf industry and policy makers should act to minimize the harmful effects of UVR exposure, and have they have ability to also be hugely influential on an important public health message.

RAG2 PHD finger couples histone H3 lysine 4 trimethylation with V(D)J recombination

        Matthews, Adam G. W.,Kuo, Alex J.,Ramó,n-Maiques, Santiago,Han, Sunmi,Champagne, Karen S.,Ivanov, Dmitri,Gallardo, Mercedes,Carney, Dylan,Cheung, Peggie,Ciccone, David N.,Walter, Kay L.,Utz, Pau Nature Publishing Group 2007 Nature Vol.450 No.7172

Nuclear processes such as transcription, DNA replication and recombination are dynamically regulated by chromatin structure. Eukaryotic transcription is known to be regulated by chromatin-associated proteins containing conserved protein domains that specifically recognize distinct covalent post-translational modifications on histones. However, it has been unclear whether similar mechanisms are involved in mammalian DNA recombination. Here we show that RAG2—an essential component of the RAG1/2 V(D)J recombinase, which mediates antigen-receptor gene assembly—contains a plant homeodomain (PHD) finger that specifically recognizes histone H3 trimethylated at lysine 4 (H3K4me3). The high-resolution crystal structure of the mouse RAG2 PHD finger bound to H3K4me3 reveals the molecular basis of H3K4me3-recognition by RAG2. Mutations that abrogate RAG2’s recognition of H3K4me3 severely impair V(D)J recombination in vivo. Reducing the level of H3K4me3 similarly leads to a decrease in V(D)J recombination in vivo. Notably, a conserved tryptophan residue (W453) that constitutes a key structural component of the K4me3-binding surface and is essential for RAG2’s recognition of H3K4me3 is mutated in patients with immunodeficiency syndromes. Together, our results identify a new function for histone methylation in mammalian DNA recombination. Furthermore, our results provide the first evidence indicating that disrupting the read-out of histone modifications can cause an inherited human disease.

        Historicizing “Korean Criminality”

Joel Matthews(조엘 매튜스) 고려대학교 한국사연구소 2017 International Journal of Korean History Vol.22 No.1

In the context of Japanese colonialism, this article examines the discourse of colonial criminality that came to epistemologically position the Korean colonial subject as criminal and therefore necessitating domination, surveillance and punishment. The discourse of colonial criminality stemmed from Japan’s late nineteenth century epistemological commitment to imperialism and concomitant knowledge of law and the legality of colonial subjects. Through an analysis that historicizes the “criminal Korean” (futei senjin) epithet in the prewar and the emergence of yami as a signifier of Korean economic criminality throughout the 1940s, this article illustrates how the racialization of Koreans in Japan was both framed in terms of crime and subversion, and how that criminality functioned as a justification for postcolonial legalized exclusion and discrimination.

      • Future Problem Solving - Our Educational Curriculum Needs It!

Junita Matthews-Morgan 대한사고개발학회 1999 The International Journal of Creativity & Problem Vol.9 No.1

The development of students as problem solvers has become an issue of international concern. Teaching problem solving skills within the context of complex scientific and social problems is a powerful way of enlisting student interest, especially when these problems are ones that students are likely to experience in the future. Exposure to critical present and future problems can also empower students to become change agents. This paper describes the international Future Problem Solving Program begun in the USA, in 1974, by Dr. E. Paul Torrance. The process used and the different program components are described. Finally, a discussion of the benefits of the FPS Program are presented.

The Tethered Fates of Japan’s “Foreigner” Communities: Zainichi Koreans, Residency Provisions, and the COVID-19 Pandemic

Joel Matthews,Eiko Osaka 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원 2023 Seoul journal of Korean studies Vol.36 No.2

This article explores how the fates of Japan’s “foreign” communities—both “oldcomer” Zainichi Korean residents and “newcomer” foreign residents—have, especially since the 1990s, become tethered to one another. The authors argue that the postwar Zainichi Korean campaigns for legal, social, economic, educational, ethnic, constitutional, and welfare benefits have laid a foundation of “residency provisions” that the contemporary newcomer foreign community have also come to heavily rely on. However, access to such residency provisions by non-Japanese has increasingly come under attack from nativist and xenophobic groups such as the Zaitokukai and political parties such as the Japan First Party. More recently, waves of COVID-19 pandemic border closures and “states of emergency” incited a cultural and political environment in which “foreigners” became inextricably linked to the virus as a threat. Political and public support for border closures and stricter immigration controls coalesced with divisive and xenophobic movements that had primarily targeted Zainichi Koreans. The authors maintain this resulted in a shift towards exclusionary discourses directed at Japan’s “foreigner” communities more generally. As social outgroups in contemporary Japan, Zainichi Koreans and newcomer foreigners are semantically, socially, and—most importantly—politically excluded through the Japanese/foreigner divide that continues to permeate Japanese self-consciousness. In conclusion, the case study of “IKUNO Tabunka Flat” is introduced as a model of Zainichi Korean grass-roots multiculturalism that attempts to overcome social division and isolation in Ikuno’s “foreign” communities and assist in the creation of a more substantive and meaningful multicultural community in contemporary Japan.

Creativity and leadership’s role in gifted identification and programming in the USA: a pilot study

Michael Matthews 서울대학교 교육연구소 2015 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.16 No.2

Definitions of giftedness developed in the USA have included both creative and leadership giftedness for over 40 years, but there has been relatively little empirical study of the implementation of programming in either of these areas. Because gifted education practices in the USA may provide models for the development of these practices in other countries, it seems important to evaluate the presence and content of programming in creativity and leadership in the USA to develop an understanding of what strengths and barriers these aspects of giftedness may face in other settings. In this pilot study, I examined gifted policies to identify US states that would be highly supportive of programming in leadership or creative giftedness. I then searched systematically for evidence of such programming on the gifted education pages of district Web sites within two of these states. Findings reveal that a widely varied level of detail is provided online at the district level; while there was at least one strong description evident in both the creativity and leadership areas, these were the exception rather than the rule. Further study is needed to confirm and extend these findings.

I wear, therefore I am: investigating sneakerhead culture, social identity, and brand preference among men

        Delisia Matthews,Qiana Cryer-Coupet,Nimet Degirmencioglu 한국의류학회 2021 Fashion and Textiles Vol.8 No.1

While the popularity of athletic footwear or “sneakers” has been widely assessed within academic literature, few studies to date have examined the influence of a specific sneaker subculture called “Sneakerheads”. Moreover, the brand preferences and brand identities that may exist within the Sneakerhead subculture have not been extensively examined. To address this gap in the research, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 male, self-identified Sneakerheads. The main goal of the research was to explore the Sneakerhead culture, while gaining an understanding of brand preferences, practices, and group identity factors. The Social Identity Theory was employed as the theoretical framework for this research. Qualitative analysis of the interviews revealed the following three topical areas: (1) Back in the Day, (2) All About the Jumpman, and (3) For Members Only. Findings regarding the unique culture of Sneakerheads indicate a clear sense of group identity as it relates to motivations, behaviors, and brand identity within the Sneakerhead community. Moreover, the findings of this study further define the lifestyle of a Sneakerhead and shed light on their unique behaviors and practices within the culture.
