Numerical investigation of non-uniform magnetic field effects on the blood velocity and magnetic nanoparticles concentration inside the vessel

        S. M. A. Ne`mati,M. Ghassemi,A. Shahidian 대한기계학회 2017 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.31 No.4

Among other applications, Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are used as drug carriers for guided drug delivery purposes. The aim of the current study is to numerically investigate the effect of non-uniform magnetic field on the blood flow and MNPs concentration inside a vessel. The coupled governing equations under the influence of non-uniform magnetic field are utilized and non-dimensionalized. Two dimensionless parameters, Magnetic force number (MFN) and Magnetic drift number (MDN), are introduced and their effects on the blood flow velocity and the MNPs concentration are studied. The results show for the same magnetic force number, the MNPs concentration on the vessel wall increases as the magnetic drift number increases. While under the same magnetic drift number, magnetic nanoparticles decreases as magnetic force number increases. This implies that the MNPs concentration at the entrance is low while MNPs radius is large. In addition, the greater the magnetic force and the magnetic drift numbers is the higher the deformation of streamlines becomes.

Combined Effect of CO2 and Temperature on Wheat Powdery Mildew Development

        Slavica Matić,Maria Alexandra Cucu,Angelo Garibaldi,Maria Lodovica Gullino 한국식물병리학회 2018 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.34 No.4

The effect of simulated climate changes by applying different temperatures and CO2 levels was investigated in the Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici/wheat pathosystem. Healthy and inoculated plants were exposed in single phytotrons to six CO2+temperature combinations: (1) 450 ppm CO2/18-22°C (ambient CO2 and low temperature), (2) 850 ppm CO2/18-22°C (elevated CO2 and low temperature), (3) 450 ppm CO2/22-26°C (ambient CO2 and medium temperature), (4) 850 ppm CO2/22-26°C (elevated CO2 and medium temperature), (5) 450 ppm CO2/26-30°C (ambient CO2 and high temperature), and (6) 850 ppm CO2/26-30°C (elevated CO2 and high temperature). Powdery mildew disease index, fungal DNA quantity, plant death incidence, plant expression of pathogenesis-related (PR) genes, plant growth parameters, carbohydrate and chlorophyll content were evaluated. Both CO2 and temperature, and their interaction significantly influenced powdery mildew development. The most advantageous conditions for the progress of powdery mildew on wheat were low temperature and ambient CO2. High temperatures inhibited pathogen growth independent of CO2 conditions, and no typical powdery mildew symptoms were observed. Elevated CO2 did not stimulate powdery mildew development, but was detrimental for plant vitality. Similar abundance of three PR transcripts was found, and the level of their expression was different between six phytotron conditions. Real time PCR quantification of Bgt was in line with the disease index results, but this technique succeeded to detect the pathogen also in asymptomatic plants. Overall, future global warming scenarios may limit the development of powdery mildew on wheat in Mediterranean area, unless the pathogen will adapt to higher temperatures.

Cytotoxic Effect of Wine Polyphenolic Extracts and Resveratrol Against Human Carcinoma Cells and Normal Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells

        Ivana Matić,Zeljko Zizak,Mladen Simonovic,Branislav Simonovic,Dejan God-evac,Katarina Savikin,Zorica Juranic 한국식품영양과학회 2010 Journal of medicinal food Vol.13 No.4

Red and white wine polyphenols have been reported to provide substantial health benefits. In this study, the cytotoxic activity of red and white wine polyphenolic extracts and of resveratrol was evaluated against different cancer cell lines—human cervix adenocarcinoma HeLa, human breast adenocarcinoma MDA-MB-361, and human breast carcinoma MDA-MB-453—and normal human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Qualitative and quantitative compositions of wine polyphenolic extracts obtained by fractional vacuum distillation of corresponding wines were determined using spectrophotometric methods and high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection and liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry analysis. It was demonstrated that wine polyphenolic extracts and resveratrol exerted higher cytotoxic activity against HeLa and MDA-MB-453cells in comparison to MDA-MB-361cells and unstimulated and stimulated PBMCs. Furthermore, white wine polyphenolic extract exhibited a significantly higher antiproliferative action on cancer cell lines than red wine extract. The presence of condensed or fragmented nuclei in HeLa cells, pretreated with extract of white wine and stained with a mixture of acridine orange and ethidium bromide, pointed to the morphological signs of apoptosis. In addition, HeLa cells in late stages of apoptosis or secondary necrosis were also observed. Results from our study suggest that polyphenolic extracts from red and white wine may have anticarcinogenic potential.

Vol.26 No.3

Purpose: This paper presents research evidence that the environmental design of the doffing area in a biocontainment unit (BCU) can have a measurable impact on increasing the safety of frontline healthcare workers (HCW) during doffing of high-level personal protective equipment (PPE), and proposes optimized biocontainment unit design. Methods: From 2016 to 2019, The SimTigrate Design Lab conducted 3 consecutive studies, focusing on ways in which the built environment may support or hinder safe doffing. In the first study, to identify the risky behaviors, we observed 56 simulation exercises with HCWs in 4 BCUs and 1 high-fidelity BCU mockup. In the second study, we tested the effectiveness of a redesigned doffing area on improving the HCWs performance and used simulation, observation, and rapid prototyping in 1 high-fidelity mockup of a doffing area. In a follow-up study, we used simulation and co-design with HCWs to optimize the design of a safer doffing area in a full-size pediatric BCU mock-up. Results: We identified 11 specific risky behaviors potentially leading to occupational injury, or contamination of the PPE, or of the environment. We developed design strategies to create a space for safer doffing. In the second study, in a redesigned doffing area, the overall performance of HCW improved, and we observed a significant decrease in the number of risky behaviors; some risky behaviors were eliminated. There was a significant decrease in physical and cognitive load for the HCWs. Finally, we propose an optimized layout of a BCU for a safer process of PPE doffing. Implications: The proposed BCU design supports better staff communication, efficiency, and automates safer behaviors. Our findings can be used to develop design guidelines for spaces where patients with other highly infectious diseases are treated when the safety of the patient-facing HCWs is of critical importance.

      • Analytical and experimental investigations on the performance of tuned liquid column ball damper considering a hollow ball

        Mati Ullah Shah,Muhammad Usman,In-Ho Kim,Sania Dawood 국제구조공학회 2022 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.83 No.5

Passive vibration control devices like tuned liquid column dampers (TLCD) not only significantly reduce buildings’ vibrations but also can serve as a water storage facility. The recently introduced modified form of TLCD known as tuned liquid column ball damper (TLCBD) suppressed external vibration efficiently compared to traditional TLCD. For excellent performance, the mass ratio of TLCBD should be in the range of 5% to 7%, which does not include the mass of the ball. This additional mass of the ball increases the overall structure mass. Therefore, in this paper, an effort is made to reduce the mass of TLCBD. For this purpose, a new modified version of TLCBD known as tuned liquid column hollow ball damper (TLCHBD) is proposed. The existing mathematical modeling of TLCBD is used for this new damper by updating the numerical values of the mass and mass moment of the ball. Analytically the optimal design parameters are obtained. Numerically the TLCHBD is investigated with a single degree of freedom structure under harmonic and seismic loadings. It is found that TLCHBD performance is similar to TLCBD in both loadings’ cases. To validate the numerical results, an experimental study is conducted. The mass of the ball of TLCHBD is reduced by 50% compared to the ball of TLCBD. Both the arrangements are studied with a multi-degree of freedom structure under harmonic and seismic loadings using a shake table. The results of the experimental study confirm the numerical findings. It is found that the performance behavior of both the dampers is almost similar under harmonic and seismic loadings. In short, the TLCHBD is lighter in weight than TLCBD but has a similar vibration suppression ability.

Web Service Proxy Architecture using WS-Eventing for Reducing SOAP Traffic

        Mati Bekuma Terefe,오상윤 한국엔터프라이즈아키텍처학회 2013 정보기술아키텍처연구 Vol.10 No.2

Web Services offer many benefits over other types of middleware in distributed computing. However, usage of Web Services results in large network bandwidth since Web Services use XML-based protocol which is heavier than binary protocols. Even though there have been many researches to minimize the network traffic and bandwidth usages of Web Services messages, none of them are solving problem clearly yet. In this paper, we propose a transparent proxy with cache to avoid transfer of repeated SOAP data, sent by Web Service to an application. To maintain the cache consistency, we introduce publish/subscribe paradigm using WS-Eventing between the proxy and Web Service. The implemented system based on our proposed architecture will not compromise the standards of Web Service. The evaluation of our system shows that caching SOAP messages not only reduces the network traffic but also decreases the request delays.

Dynamics of the self-similar Kink and rational solitary waves in a dual power-law medium

Youssoufa Mati,Dafounansou Ousmanou,Mohamadou Alidou 한국물리학회 2022 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.80 No.5

The aim of this work is to study different types of similariton solutions for the inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with dual power-law nonlinearity. This is accomplished via three methods: the hyperbolic ansatz method, the auxiliary equation method, and the Riccati sub-ODE method. Depending on the Galilean change of the frame parameter Ω , the graphs reveal the fact that the rational soliton is actually a bisoliton that behaves at some aspects as a double-soliton whereas the kink boomerang-like soliton appears to be a kink-antikink soliton. These observations predict that the two sides of a rational soliton could possess distinct chirality. Furthermore, the evaluation of the modulation instability (MI) shows that the gain decreases with increasing power index p.
