Multi-mode Pushover Procedure for Deformation Demand Estimates of Steel Moment-resisting Frames

Massimiliano Ferraioli 한국강구조학회 2017 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.17 No.2

The main objective of the paper is the development and evaluation of a multi-mode pushover procedure for the approximate analysis of the seismic response of steel moment-resisting frames. A generalized force vector derived from modal combination simulates the instantaneous force distribution acting on the structure when the interstorey drift reaches its maximum value during dynamic response to a seismic excitation. Considering the interstorey drift for each floor, a set of generalized force vectors (each associated to maximum drift at one story) is applied separately to the structure until the corresponding target interstorey drift is attained. The maximum value of each response parameter is obtained from the envelope of results. This multi-run and multi-mode pushover procedure allows a simple implementation, reducing the computational effort compared with adaptive nonlinear static procedures and with nonlinear response history analysis. Furthermore, it does not suffer from the statistical combination of inelastic modal responses calculated separately. Both effectiveness and accuracy are verified through a comparative study involving regular steel moment resisting frames subjected to various acceleration records. The results are finally compared with those obtained from other nonlinear static procedures and with the “exact” values from nonlinear response history analysis. It is demonstrated that the proposed procedure is able to accurately predict the seismic demands of steel moment-resisting frames. In low- and middle-rise frames, the error of interstorey drift ratios of the proposed procedure is in the range 5.8-20.8% when the intensity level of the input ground motion varies in the range 0.2-0.8 g. In high-rise frames the error of interstorey drift ratios is in the range 6.38-20.9%.

Dynamic Increase Factor for Pushdown analysis of Seismically Designed Steel Moment-resisting Frames

Massimiliano Ferraioli 한국강구조학회 2016 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.16 No.3

The independent threat scenario of sudden column loss under localised damage is usually considered in progressive collapse assessment. The effect of the sudden removal of a column is like the sudden application of the gravity load on the structure when significant deformations occur. This conventional approach is based on the simplifying but realistic hypothesis that the peak dynamic response can be assessed with reasonable accuracy using the nonlinear static response. In this approach, amplified gravity loads are applied to the bays that are affected by the removed column to compensate for the dynamic effects corresponding to the real load redistribution. The paper investigates the dynamic increase factor to be considered in the nonlinear pushdown analysis of seismically designed steel moment-resisting frames. The influence of the fundamental parameters involved in progressive collapse analysis was highlighted. The effect of various design variables, such as the number of stories, the number of bays, the location of the removed column and the level of seismic design load was investigated. The dynamic increase factor was estimated in a way to generate the best match of the peak dynamic responses through the nonlinear static analysis. Finally, the values obtained were expressed as a function of the vertical displacement at the location of the removed column and then compared with the GSA formulation based on the ductility factor.

REVIEW : Barrett`s Esophagus and Cancer Risk: How Research Advances Can Impact Clinical Practice

( Massimiliano Di Pietro ),( Durayd Alzoubaidi ),( Rebecca C Fitzgerald ) The Editorial Office of Gut and Liver 2014 Gut and Liver Vol.8 No.4

Barrett`s esophagus (BE) is the only known precursor to esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), whose incidence has increased sharply in the last 4 decades. The annual conversion rate of BE to cancer is significant, but small. The identification of patients at a higher risk of cancer therefore poses a clinical conundrum. Currently, endoscopic surveillance is recommended in BE patients, with the aim of diagnosing either dysplasia or cancer at early stages, both of which are curable with minimally invasive endoscopic techniques. There is a large variation in clinical practice for endoscopic surveillance, and dysplasia as a marker of increased risk is affected by sampling error and high interobserver variability. Screening programs have not yet been formally accepted, mainly due to the economic burden that would be generated by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Screening programs have not yet been formally accepted, mainly due to the economic burden that would be generated by widespread indication to upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. In fact, it is currently difficult to formulate an accurate algorithm to confidently target the population at risk, based on the known clinical risk factors for BE and EAC. This review will focus on the clinical and molecular factors that are involved in the development of BE and its conversion to cancer and on how increased knowledge in these areas can improve the clinical management of the disease. Evaluation of dynamic increase factor in progressive collapse analysis of steel frame structures considering catenary action

Massimiliano Ferraioli 국제구조공학회 2019 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.30 No.3

This paper investigates the effects of the tensile catenary action on dynamic increase factor (DIF) in the nonlinear static analysis for progressive collapse of steel-frame buildings. Numerical analyses were performed to verify the accuracy of the empirical and analytical expressions proposed in the literature in cases where the catenary action is activated. For this purpose, nonlinear static and dynamic analyses of a series of steel moment frame buildings with a different number of spans and stories were carried out following the alternate path method. Different column removal scenarios were considered as separate load cases. The dynamic increase factor that approximately compensates for the dynamic effects in the nonlinear static analysis was selected so to match results from the nonlinear dynamic analysis. The study results showed that the many expressions in literature may not work in cases where the catenary stage is fully developed.

Prominent Clinical Dimension, Duration of Illness and Treatment Response in Schizophrenia: A Naturalistic Study

        Massimiliano Buoli,Alice Caldiroli,Gabriele Panza,Alfredo Carlo Altamura 대한신경정신의학회 2012 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.9 No.4

Objective Preliminary data indicate that predominant positive symptoms are predictive of subsequent treatment response, while negative and cognitive symptoms are associated with poor outcome. Purpose of the present study was to investigate the relation between the predominant clinical dimension, duration of illness and acute antipsychotic response in a sample of schizophrenic inpatients. Methods Fifty-one schizophrenic inpatients, receiving an antipsychotic mono-therapy, were dimensionally assessed at the admission in the Acute Psychiatric Unit of the University of Milan. Treatment response was selected as parameter of outcome and defined as a reduction >50% of baseline total The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) score. Demographic and clinical variables between responders and non-responders were compared using one-way analysis of variance for continuous variables and χ2 test for dichotomous ones. Binary logistic regression was performed to find if dimensional scores and duration of illness were associated with acute antipsychotic response. Results A longer duration of illness was found in non-responders respect to responders (15.61 years vs. 8.28 years)(F=4.98, p=0.03). Higher scores on PANSS positive sub-scale (OR=1.3, p=0.03), lower scores on cognitive PANSS scores (OR=0.75, p=0.05) and shorter duration of illness (OR=0.93, p=0.04) were found to be predictive of acute antipsychotic response. Conclusion These preliminary results show that a long duration of illness as well as a more severe cognitive impairment is predictive of treatment non-response, indicating a worse outcome for chronic patients with predominant cognitive symptoms. • EU Trade with Korea: From Deficit to Surplus A Gravity Approach to Assess the Impact of the EU-Korea FTA on Bilateral Trade

        ( Massimiliano Porto ) 한국EU학회 2018 Asia-Pacific Journal of EU Studies Vol.16 No.2

After five years of implementation of the EU-Korea Free-Trade Agreement (FTA), the European Union (EU) was able to turn consistent and persistent trade deficits with South Korea into a surplus, signalling the positive effects of the EU-Korea FTA on the EU exports to South Korea. On the other hand, Korean expectations were not met. Some reasons for this unexpected result for South Korea include the economic recession in Europe, South Korea’s concentrated export structure, and the relocation of Korean firms’ production base abroad. However, it should be noted that the EU-Korea FTA produced positive effects on South Korea in these years as it could prevent further reduction of Korean exports to the EU. Using latest best practices in the gravity model literature, I examine the impact of the EU-Korea FTA on EU-Korea trade through a gravity model consisting of 100 countries over the period 2004-2016, at aggregated and disaggregated level, and for each EU member. The breakdown at disaggregated data and for each EU member enable a better understanding about which lines of commodities and countries benefitted more from the EU-Korea FTA.
