바츠와프 시에로셰프스키(Wacław Sieroszewski, 1858-1945)의 한국 여행

마를네나올렉시욱 ( Marlena Oleksiuk ) 전북대학교 인문학연구소 2022 건지인문학 Vol.- No.34

This article is about Wacław Sieroszwski, a Polish writer, who as the first Polish Koreanist wrote about Korea. Korea was an interesting and unknown land for Polish people between 19th and 20th centuries. So, the book about Korea was even more interesting for people in Poland. Sieroszewski wrote two great books about Korea. One is an ethnographic work “The Key of the Far East. Korea” and the second is a novel “Ol-Soni kisan”. The former is an enormous work, in which Sieroszewski is writing about many aspects about Korea like society, political situation, daily life of Koreans, animals and plants in Korea, rituals and ceremonies, beliefs and others. “Ol-Soni kisan” is a novel about love and political situation in Korea at the end of 19th century. Both works concerns political situation in 19th century Korea. Wacław Sieroszewski as an unknown writer, became forgotten for many years in Poland, but he deserves to be discovered again, because his biography is very complicated and interesting for understanding the thoughts of 19th-20th centuries’ in the Korean Studies.

Plasmopara elegantissima sp. nov. (Oomycota, Peronosporales), a Downy Mildew Species Specialized to Impatiens textori (Balsaminaceae)

        ( Young-joon Choi ),( Marlena Görg ),( Hyeon-dong Shin ),( Marco Thines ) 한국균학회 2020 Mycobiology Vol.48 No.4

Over the past 15 years, downy mildew became the most destructive foliar disease in cultivated Impatiens species (Balsaminaceae) worldwide. A previous study had revealed that the causal agent was not Plasmopara obducens (Oomycota, Peronosporales) but Plasmopara destructor on Impatiens walleriana, and Plasmopara velutina on Impatiens balsamina. This hints to a relatively high degree of specialization of Plasmopara on Balsaminaceae. Therefore, it was the aim of the present study to perform multigene phylogenetic analysis and detailed morphological investigation for several Korean downy mildew samples parasitic to cultivated I. walleriana, and I. balsamina, but also to a northeast Asian wild plant, Impatiens textori. It was revealed that I. textori harbors a new species, which is introduced and described here as Plasmopara elegantissima.

Clinical and patient-reported outcomes after recession coverage using modified vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access with a volume-stable collagen matrix as compared to a coronally advanced flap with a subepithelial connective tissue graft

        Chun-Teh Lee,Marlena Lange,Alain Jureidini,Nurit Bittner,Ulrike Schulze-Spate Korean Academy of Periodontology 2022 Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science Vol.52 No.6

Purpose: Coronally advanced split-or full-thickness (CAST or CAFT) flaps in combination with subepithelial connective tissue grafts (SCTGs) are commonly used in root-coverage procedures despite postoperative pain and bleeding from the graft donor site. Therefore, the modified vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access procedure (VISTAX) uses a novel collagen matrix (VCMX) instead of autogenous tissue to address the limitations associated with autogenous tissue grafting. This retrospective study compared the clinical outcomes of VISTAX to the results obtained after using a CAST or CAFT flap in combination with SCTG for root coverage. Methods: Patients with single or multiple adjacent recession I/II defects were included, with 10 subjects each in the VISTAX, CAFT, and CAST groups. Defect coverage, keratinized tissue width, esthetic scores, and patients' perceived pain and dentinal hypersensitivity (visual analogue scale [VAS]) were assessed at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months. Results: All surgical techniques significantly reduced gingival recession (P<0.0001). Defect coverage, esthetic appearance, and the reduction in dentinal hypersensitivity were comparable. However, the VAS scores for pain were significantly lower in the VISTAX group than in the CAFT and CAST groups, which had similar scores (P<0.05). Furthermore, the clinical results of VISTAX and CAFT/CAST generally remained stable at 6 months. Conclusions: The clinical outcomes of VISTAX, CAFT, and CAST were comparable. However, patients perceived significantly less pain after VISTAX, indicating a potentially higher patient acceptance of the procedure. A prospective trial with a longer follow-up period and a larger sample size should therefore evaluate VISTAX further.

Ellagic acid inhibits RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation by suppressing the p38 MAP kinase pathway

        Mpho Rantlha,Travers Sagar,Marlena C. Kruger,Magdalena Coetzee,Vishwa Deepak 대한약학회 2017 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.40 No.1

Bone undergoes continuous remodeling by acoupled action between osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Duringosteoporosis, osteoclast activity is often elevatedleading to increased bone destruction. Hence, osteoclastsare deemed as potential therapeutic targets to alleviatebone loss. Ellagic acid (EA) is a polyphenol reported topossess anticancer, antioxidant and anti-inflammatoryproperties. However, its effects on osteoclast formationand function have not yet been examined. Here, weexplored the effects of EA on RANKL-induced osteoclastdifferentiation in RAW264.7 murine macrophages(in vitro) and human CD14?monocytes (ex vivo). EAdose-dependently attenuated RANKL-induced TRAP?osteoclast formation in osteoclast progenitors with maximalinhibition seen at 1 lM concentration without cytotoxicity. Moreover, owing to perturbed osteoclastogenesis,EA disrupted actin ring formation and bone resorptivefunction of osteoclasts. Analysis of the underlyingmolecular mechanisms revealed that EA suppressed thephosphorylation and activation of the p38 MAP kinasepathway which subsequently impaired the RANKL-induceddifferentiation of osteoclast progenitors. Takentogether, these novel results indicate that EA alleviatesosteoclastogenesis by suppressing the p38 signaling pathwaydownstream of RANKL and exerts inhibitory effectson bone resorption and actin ring formation.

Outcome Prediction Using Perfusion Parameters and Collateral Scores of Multi-Phase and Single-Phase CT Angiography in Acute Stroke: Need for One, Two, Three, or Thirty Scans?

        Katharina Schregel,Ioannis Tsogkas,Carolin Peter,Antonia Zapf,Daniel Behme,Marlena Schnieder,Ilko L. Maier,Jan Liman,Michael Knauth,Marios-Nikos Psychogios 대한뇌졸중학회 2018 Journal of stroke Vol.20 No.3

Background and Purpose Collateral status is an important factor determining outcome in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Hence, different collateral scoring systems have been introduced. We applied different scoring systems on single- and multi-phase computed tomography (CT) angiography (spCTA and mpCTA) and compared them to CT perfusion (CTP) parameters to identify the best method for collateral evaluation in patients with AIS. Methods A total of 102 patients with AIS due to large vessel occlusion in the anterior circulation who underwent multimodal CT imaging and who were treated endovascularly were included. Collateral status was assessed on spCTA and mpCTA using four different scoring systems and compared to CTP parameters. Logistic regression was performed for predicting favorable outcome. Results All collateral scores correlated well with each other and with CTP parameters. Comparison of collateral scores stratified by extent of perfusion deficit showed relevant differences between groups (P<0.01 for each). An spCTA collateral score discriminated best between favorable and unfavorable outcome as determined using the modified Rankin Scale 3 months after stroke. Conclusions Collateral status evaluated on spCTA may suffice for outcome prediction and decision making in AIS patients, potentially obviating further imaging modalities like mpCTA or CTP.

Endotoxin-induced inflammation disturbs melatonin secretion in ewe

        Andrzej Przemyslaw Herman,Karolina Wojtulewicz,Joanna Bochenek,Agata Krawczynska,Hanna Antushevich,Bartosz Pawlina,Marlena Zielinska-Gorska,Anna Herman,Katarzyna Romanowicz,Dorota Tomaszewska-Zaremba 아세아·태평양축산학회 2017 Animal Bioscience Vol.30 No.12

Objective: The study examined the effect of intravenous administration of bacterial endotoxin—lipopolysaccharide (LPS) —on the nocturnal secretion of melatonin and on the expression of enzymes of the melatonin biosynthetic pathway in the pineal gland of ewes, taking into account two different photoperiodic conditions: short-night (SN; n = 12) and long-night (LN; n = 12). Methods: In both experiments, animals (n = 12) were randomly divided into two groups: control (n = 6) and LPS-treated (n = 6) one. Two hours after sunset, animals received an injection of LPS or saline. Blood samples were collected starting one hour after sunset and continuing for 3 hours after the treatment. The ewes were euthanized 3 hours after LPS/saline treatment. The concentration of hormones in plasma was assayed by radioimmunoassay. In the pineal gland, the content of serotonin and its metabolite was determined by HPLC; whereas the expression of examined genes and protein was assayed using real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western Blot, respectively. Results: Endotoxin administration lowered (p<0.05) levels of circulating melatonin in animals from LN photoperiod only during the first hour after treatment, while in ewes from SN photoperiod only in the third hour after the injection. Inflammation more substantially suppressed biosynthesis of melatonin in ewes from SN photoperiod, which were also characterised by lower (p<0.05) cortisol concentrations after LPS treatment compared with animals from LN photoperiod. In the pineal gland of ewes subjected to SN photoperiod, LPS reduced (p<0.05) serotonin content and the expression of melatonin biosynthetic pathway enzymes, such as tryptophan hydroxylase and arylalkylamine-N-acetyltransferase. Pineal activity may be disturbed by circulating LPS and proinflammatory cytokines because the expression of mRNAs encoding their corresponding receptors was determined in this gland. Conclusion: The present study showed that peripheral inflammation reduces the secretion of melatonin, but this effect may be influenced by the photoperiod.
