• Lifetime prediction of bearings in on-board starter generator

        Zieja, Mariusz,Tomaszewska, Justyna,Woch, Marta,Michalski, Mariusz Techno-Press 2021 Advances in aircraft and spacecraft science Vol.8 No.4

Ensuring flight safety for passengers as well as crew is the most important aspect of modern aviation, and in order to achieve this, it is necessary to be able to forecast the durability of individual components. The present contribution illustrates the results of a computational analysis to determine the possibility of analysing the prediction of bearing durability in on-board rotating equipment from the point of view of thermal fatigue. In this study, a method developed at the Air Force Institute of Technology was used for analysis, which allowed to determine the bearing durability from the flight altitude profile. Two aircraft have been chosen for analysis - a military M-28 and a civilian Embraer. As a result of the analysis were obtained: the bearing durability in on-board rotating devices, average operation time between failures, as well as failure rate. In conclusion, the practical applicability of this approach is demonstrated by the fact that even with a limited number of flight parameters, it is possible to estimate bearing durability and increase flight safety by regular inspections.

        Mariusz Kanturski,Ahmed Zia,Muhammad Ather Rafi 한국응용곤충학회 2017 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.20 No.4

The aphid genus Lachnus Burmeister, 1835 (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Lachninae) in Pakistan is reviewed to include two species. A new species, Lachnus margallaensis Kanturski & Zia sp. nov. is described on the basis of specimens collected in 2016 in Pir Sohawa, Margalla Hills from Himalayan oak (Quercus oblongata). The fundatrix, apterous and alate viviparous female of the new species are described and figured in detail. On the basis of type specimens and Pakistani material, L. acutihirsutus Kumar and Burkhardt, 1970 is redescribed and compared with the new species. The place of the new species within Blackman and Eastop's key to Lachnus on Quercus as well as key to Lachninae aphids of Pakistan are also provided

Effects of Energetic Disorder and Mobility Anisotropy on Geminate Electron-hole Recombination in the Presence of a Donor-acceptor Heterojunction

Mariusz Wojcik,Przemyslaw Michalak,M. Tachiya 대한화학회 2012 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.33 No.3

Geminate electron-hole recombination in organic solids in the presence of a donor-acceptor heterojunction is studied by computer simulations. We analyze how the charge-pair separation probability in such systems is affected by energetic disorder of the media, anisotropy of charge-carrier mobilities, and other factors. We show that in energetically disordered systems the effect of heterojunction on the charge-pair separation probability is stronger than that in idealized systems without disorder. We also show that a mismatch between electron and hole mobilities reduces the separation probability, although in energetically disordered systems this effect is weaker compared to the case of no energetic disorder. We demonstrate that the most important factor that determines the charge-pair separation probability is the ratio of the sum of electron and hole mobilities to the rate constant of recombination reaction. We also consider systems with mobility anisotropy and calculate the electric field dependence of the charge-pair separation probability for all possible orientations of high-mobility axes in the donor and acceptor phases. We theoretically show that it is possible to increase the charge-pair separation probability by controlling the mobility anisotropy in heterojunction systems and in consequence to achieve higher efficiencies of organic photovoltaic devices.

      • Poster Session : PS 0472 ; Nephrology ; Pain in ADPKD: It is Not Always Related to the Kidney

        ( Mariusz Niemczyk ),( Monika Gradzik ),( Leszek Paczek ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Background: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is an inherited disorder affecting 1 in 1,000 people in the general population. It belongs to common reasons of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and is responsible for 10% of cases of the end stage renal disease. Apart from renal manifestations, changes in other organs may be present, including arterial hypertension, intracranial aneurysms, liver cysts, and others. Pain is a common symptom in ADPKD, affi icting as much as 60% of patients, and is frequently connected to the kidney. However, in our practice, the most severe cases of chronic lumbalgia and abdominal pain in ADPKD patients were of extrarenal origin. Methods: Report of 2 ADPKD cases, in which the lumbalgia and abdominal pain were initially regarded as caused by polycystic kidneys. Results: In a 55-year-old female with stage 3 CKD due to ADPKD, severe backache, and abdominal pain, requiring opioid analgetics, spondyloarthrosis and osteoporosis with compression fracture of the sixth thoracic vertebra were fi nally diagnosed. In a 51-year-old male with ADPKD, stage 2 CKD and chronic lumbalgia, scoliosis and advanced spondyloarthrosis were diagnosed. Conclusions: It should not be forgotten that the lumbalgia and abdominal pain in ADPKD may be of extrarenal origin. Other than polycystic kidneys sources of pain should be always sought in ADPKD subjects complaining of pain.

Breakfast with Confucius, Dinner with Lem. Linguistic Avatars of GPT-3

( Mariusz Pisarski ) 중앙대학교 인문콘텐츠연구소 2021 인공지능인문학연구 Vol.7 No.-

Anthropomorphic effects of GPT-3, a third-generation natural language modelling system, are leaving a lasting impact on public discourse, communication, and education. This paper investigates conversational aspects of linguistic AI’s ability to construct believable representations of real people. Engaging conversations with Plato, Queen Min or Princes Diana are now more possible than ever. The GPT-3 conversational simulacra seem to possess a form of intentionality (a will to be understood). Social, philosophical and ethical implications of this new generation of conversational simulacra are discussed within a broad historical tradition of the phenomena of identity transfers: from Eastern mythology to the visions of post-human in contemporary critical discourse. The paper focuses on the possible impact of AI’s mimetic representations on existing notions of identity, agency, immortality. As such, it hopes to bridge the gap between discourses and bring AI closer to Humanities, and Humanities to AI.

Cross validation methods: analysis based on diagnostics of thyroid cancer metastasis

Mariusz Rafało 한국통신학회 2022 ICT Express Vol.8 No.2

Much of modern medical research are supported by statistics and machine learning techniques. For the reliability of these studies, it is important to measure the effectiveness of the developed models in making predictions on real medical data. Cross validation is a tool, which provides a principled method of measuring the effectiveness of models and comparing models with each other. This paper presents theoretical and empirical analysis of common cross validation methods. Using sample logistic regression model along with with six different validation methods, comparative analysis has been conducted. The model was developed to determine the level of thyroglobulin hormone, thyroid cancer marker. The marker indicates an increased risk of thyroid cancer metastasis, and is commonly used in metastasis diagnosis. Whereas, literature does not provide a single threshold of thyroglobulin value, indicating an increased risk of metastasis. This paper confirms that one of the main reasons of this lack, is the high variance of the developed models. This research argues that the use of the validation technique also influences both: measures of the model quality and the threshold value. The results show a high discrepancy in the determination of threshold values. However, iterative methods (such as sampling and bootstrap) seem to produce more stable outcomes.

      • π-Expanded coumarins: synthesis, optical properties and applications

        Tasior, Mariusz,Kim, Dokyoung,Singha, Subhankar,Krzeszewski, Maciej,Ahn, Kyo Han,Gryko, Daniel T. The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015 Journal of Materials Chemistry C Vol.3 No.7

Coumarins fused with other aromatic units have recently emerged as a hot topic of research. Their synthesis is partly based on classical methodologies such as Pechmann reaction or Knoevenagel condensation, but it also sparked the discovery of completely new pathways. In very recent years so-called vertically expanded coumarins were synthesized, effectively expanding the portfolio of existing architectures. A subtle relationship exists between the structure of fused coumarins and their optical properties. Although absorption of UV-radiation and light is a unifying theme among these π-expanded coumarins, the fluorescence properties strongly depend on the structure. The mode of fusion, the type of additional ring and the presence of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents all influence the photophysical parameters. Recent advances made it possible to modulate their absorption from 300 nm to 550 nm, resulting in new coumarins emitting orange light. This review serves as a guide through both synthesis strategies and structure-property relationship nuances. Strong intramolecular charge-transfer character made it possible to reach suitable values of two-photon absorption cross-section. Photophysical advantages of π-expanded coumarins have been already utilized in fluorescent probes and two-photon excited fluorescence microscopy.
