The steady growth of seaborne trade has resulted in the further development of container ships, ports, and container terminals, and the operating efficiency of a container terminal is a decisive element for its competitive ability in international markets. The aim of this research is to evaluate the relative efficiency of Russian and South Korean container terminals. For this purpose, the output-oriented DEA was applied to 31 container terminals of Russian and South Korean seaports for the years from 2012 to 2014. The results indicate that Korean container terminals exhibited higher efficiency scores than their Russian counterparts

The influence of monoterpenoids and phenol derivatives on Drosophila melanogaster viability

The present study investigated the effect of mono/bicyclic terpenoids and phenol derivatives on the viability of Drosophila melanogaster and their influence on the multiplication of the nuclear genome. The fertility and viability of fruit flies were assessed after oral administration and inhalation exposure of compounds 1–5: guaiacol, eugenol, borneol, menthol and carvacrol. The influence of terpenoids and phenols on the degree of chromosomes polyteny in salivary gland cells of D. melanogaster larvae was determined. Among all tested compounds, carvacrol demonstrated the most significant impact on fecundity and insect survival when inhaled or adding to the culture medium. Oral administration of carvacrol had an impact on giant chromosomes increasing their average level of chromosome polyteny degree while eugenol adding to culture medium had the opposite effect. The possible mechanism of terpenoids and phenols action is discussed.

Toward a Conception of implementation of CLIL model into University Teaching Classroom in Russian Universities

The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to identify social roles of English in implementing CLIL in English at universities in Russia and 2) to obtain a wide variety of opinions about the content and methodology of CILL in English at universities in St. Petersburg. In regard to the former, this study performed semi-structured interviews with 33 experts, 18 from social sciences and 15 from ESL/EFL education. Concerning the latter, this study conducted a survey among stakeholders and educators (n = 441). According to the data analysis, were identified four main roles of English: Russian English as a variation of English, English as one of the working languages in Russian multilingual and multicultural society, English as the global language, and English as an investment. Meanwhile, the participants in the survey expressed serious concerns about the quality of English used in the implementation of CILL in Russia. However, it could be possible to find an exact concept of the use of English, which will be appropriate and set new perspectives that may match the outlook of Russian citizens.

Systemic Functional Linguistics as a Macro-sociolinguistics Framework

This interdisciplinary study investigated the developmental stages of Systemic functional linguistics (SFL) as a macro-sociolinguistic framework. In accordance with the in-depth review of the literature in SFL and the relevant fields, this study stipulated that the first stage has the original social ideas that were developed for English-native speakers from poorer classes to mitigate social inequality through the academic genres acquisition. Many macro-sociolinguistic ideas were based not only on the systems approach, but also on Marxism. In the second stage, at the current moment, we discussed the context of non-native English language development in a non-English environment and many World Englishes (Halliday, 2003). The problem of English promotion in non-western countries did not appear explicitly, but now SFL probably faces a context of globalization and distribution of English outside the English-speaking world. From this point of view, the current SFL version - genre-based approach – carries a risk of cultural conflicts and requires some alterations to spread outside the West. Additionally, we may support Halliday’s proposals to create the versions of Englishes for non-Western countries, considering their mentality and culture.

Communication as a process of interpreting signs has always existed in people's life. In post-information society, the communication between a person and a technological system through the specific sign-attaching process becomes widespread. Moreover, it somehow replaces usual communication between people. One of the means of communication in the digital space are video games. They not only play an important role in communication processes, but also are a special case of sign-creating and interpreting. The purpose of the article is to examine video games as a space of sign-based communication between a person and a game as a specific digital system. With the help of general scientific and hermeneutic methodology, the analysis of video games as a post-information society phenomenon which people communicate to has been conducted. The process of semiosis as attaching special meanings to signs has been traced in both manipulating in-game objects and characters and understanding rules of an in-game world.

Study of neutron energy and directional distribution at the Beloyarsk NPP selected workplaces

Energy and directional distribution of neutrons at the Beloyarsk NPP workplaces is a subject of this study. Measurements of H^*(10) rate and neutron energy distribution were taken at 8 workplaces, which can be divided into three categories: work with spent or fresh nuclear fuel, work with radionuclide neutron sources, work at the rooms adjusted to reactors. The Hp(10) measurements were performed only at 6 out of 8 locations, due to the fact that long term placing of an effective neutron moderator in fresh nuclear fuel storage facility is forbidden. As a result of the research energy and direction distribution of the neutron fields at 8 locations of the Beloyarsk NPP workplaces was obtained. To estimate the accuracy of the H^*(10) rate and Hp (10) measurements the reference values of dose equivalents were calculated using energy and directional distribution. To take into account the difference between the reference values and the measured results site-specific correction factors were calculated.

The analysis of visual storytelling in pop concerts under cultural context differences - Focused on performances by American and South Korean artists from 2018 to 2022 -

Background The concert industry has changed throughout history. The concert consists of many components (stage design, visuals, choreography, music, lyrics) that interact together and contribute to the understanding by the viewer of the idea and concept of the entire performance. The videos help to attract the audience, emphasize the artist's image, and help convey information not only by text but also through pictures. The visual elements on the enormous screens have become a storytelling tool that allows the artist verbally influence the viewer's emotions through the carefully thought-out visible range. The purpose of the study is to compare and find differences between America's and South Korea's pop concert visual storytelling under the cultural aspects. Methods In the case study, the content analysis used in the current research and study―the artists for the case study were selected according to the Rankings of both countries. Collected data (visuals from the performances of each representative) observed, analyzed, and presented in the study. Define the differences in its cultures and their impact on visual storytelling, Edward Hall's concept of culture used, and the visual storytelling principles of Jess Scherman applied during the case study analysis. Result Analysis of the visual elements shown at the concerts of the performers featured in the study revealed the following differences in the form of visual storytelling. During the USA artist's concerts, following their belonging to the low-context and individualistic culture, all symbols and visual elements are expressed explicitly without understatement. In South Korea's case, the idea is implicit because they belong to the high-context and collectivist culture, according to Edward Hall. Applying Jess Sherman's principles of visual storytelling, American artists represent a relevance principle where the artist, without hesitation, discusses current social and cultural issues with the audience, bringing awareness to people. South Korean artists can't express themselves on these topics because of society's requirements and their strong bonds with it, so they tend to create a conceptual universe for their visual storytelling (archetype principle of visual storytelling). Conclusion This study found that culture has an impressive influence on visual storytelling. Even during the era of Globalization in music, culture will be the drive-force for the artists' expression. The visual elements shown during the concert are essential in visual storytelling - image conveys information and emotions, sometimes to a much greater extent than text. American artists, who are well aware of their music and performances' impact on the listeners, readily show the visual of socially oriented topics. On the other hand, South Korean artists are following their group's concept and can't express themselves as openly as American artists.

The association between vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome in Ukrainian adolescents with overweight and obesity

Purpose: This work aims to determine the association between vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome in overweight and obese adolescents from Ukraine. Methods: Anthropometric measurements were taken and general and biochemical examinations were performed on 136 obese and overweight adolescents and 60 adolescents with normal body weight. The vitamin D status was determined using 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) (calcidiol) levels in blood serum. To establish the factors influencing vitamin D status, the subjects were asked to answer a questionnaire and 2007 International Diabetes Federation diagnostic criteria were used to determine the incidence of metabolic syndrome. All research results were processed statistically. Results: A calcidiol sufficiency level was found in 3.9% of obese adolescents and 6.7% of overweight adolescents. Metabolic syndrome was found in 64.4% of obese adolescents with vitamin D deficiency, and in 26.2% of overweight adolescents. Factors associated with an increased risk of developing vitamin D deficiency in adolescents with metabolic syndrome included male sex (Р=0.042), low income per family member (Р=0.040), daily milk consumption of up to 1 cup per day (Р=0.001), physical activity (Р=0.001), duration of outdoor stays (Р=0.001), and passive rest in front of a computer or television (Р=0.001). Adolescents with metabolic syndrome were found predominance of body mass index (Р<0.001), waist circumference (Р<0.001), fasting blood glucose level (Р<0.001), and decreased calcidiol level (Р=0.022). Among metabolic syndrome components, vitamin D deficiency was strongly associated with waist circumference and increased fasting blood glucose (Р<0.05). Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in overweight and obese adolescents from Ukraine. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with metabolic syndrome criteria in overweight and obese adolescents.
