Enticing Challengeable: Mundane Questions as a Resource for Managing Face in Religious Arguments
Petrushyna. Marianna 한국사회언어학회 2017 사회언어학 Vol.25 No.2
Petrushyna, Marianna. 2017. “Enticing Challengeable: Mundane Questions as a Resource for Managing Face in Religious Arguments”. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 25(2), 131~164. From the perspective of conversation analysis this paper investigates mundane interrogation employed in order to entice a challengeable in the conflict talk produced in the context of arguments on religious topic. This research aims at identifying how the ‘face’ management in religious arguments is conducted through the practice of enticing challengeable, which draws upon the use of mundane questions employed in the religious debates. It is proposed that one of the crucial features of conflict discourse/argument, can be grasped in terms of the participants’ face work which is analyzed through the prism of Goffmanian perspective and the study of Bakhtin. Through face work the party representing a religion orients to managing not only his own face but also the face of the invisible third party or the ‘Superaddressee’, whose presence is invoked as basis for formulating an argument or counter-argument. The findings suggest identifying the discursive features of argument construction, such as the formulation of mundane questions and the reversal of the questioner-answer relationship, furnishing the participants with crucial interactional resources for managing the face of the participants (and that of the ‘God’ as the third party).

The impact of customer involvement in NSD on customer loyalty is still unknown, because most studies examine loyalty perceptions of only active participants in co-creation, while the few studies involving co-creation observers provide conflicting results. Research is also limited, as it measures user participation only at the design level, while customers are empowered to participate at all NSD stages. This study contributes to the literature by developing a model capturing the various levels of customer involvement in NSD co-creation and then, measuring its impacts on two type of user loyalty: brand loyalty and loyalty on innovation community. Data were collected from users of the Domino’s Mogul pizza toolkit empowering them to participate in all NSD stages and also to become pizza entrepreneurs by designing and selling their pizzas. Findings comparing the brand loyalty and the innovation community loyalty perceptions of users with various levels of co-creation involvement provide useful insights.
Ancient Greek and Chinese Concepts of Virtue
Marianna Benetatou 한국동서비교문학학회 2013 동서 비교문학저널 Vol.0 No.29
The paper surveys the historical development of the concept of virtue in ancient Greek and Chinese philosophy with emphasis on ancient Stoicism and Daoism. Speaking of arete mobilizes a rich conceptual and axiological constellation of meanings, such as good, excellent and harmony. Formally, the ancient Greek concept of virtue presents a rational character, but this does not mean theoretical. In fact, it is conceived as the aptitude par excellence to accord intentions with actions. Further, all theories of virtue envisage humans living in harmony not only within the socio-political reality, but also with nature. Such points provide interesting ground for engaging a dialogue with ancient Chinese concepts of de. The comparative method seeks to highlight one theory by the other inasmuch as they are nearly contemporary. Notwithstanding their formal differences, we may note a common quest for matching intentions with actions, for seeking the standard of moral excellence in universalizing goals and for defining harmony in terms of nature. The introduction of Christianity in Europe and of Buddhism in China flex slowly but steadily the character of virtue. The concept undergoes significant changes towards interiorization.
Accessory mental foramen: A rare anatomical variation detected by cone-beam computed tomography
Marianna Guanaes Gomes Torres,Ludmila de Faro Valverde,Manuela Torres Andion Vidal,Ieda Margarida Crusoe-Rebello 대한영상치의학회 2015 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.45 No.1
The mental foramen is a bilateral opening in the vestibular portion of the mandible through which nerve endings, such as the mental nerve, emerge. In general, the mental foramen is located between the lower premolars. This region is a common area for the placement of dental implants. It is very important to identify anatomical variations in presurgical imaging exams since damage to neurovascular bundles may have a direct influence on treatment success. In the hemimandible, the mental foramen normally appears as a single structure, but there are some rare reports on the presence and number of anatomical variations; these variations may include accessory foramina. The present report describes the presence of accessory mental foramina in the right mandible, as detected by cone-beam computed tomography before dental implant placement.

Background: Cupping therapy is used to treat musculoskeletal conditions, including low back pain. Objectives: The study assessed the effects of dry cupping on pain and functional disability from persistent nonspecific low back pain. Methods: This was a randomized controlled trial, where participants were allocated to a cupping therapy (n = 19) or sham (n = 18) group, for five 10-minute sessions of cupping therapy, twice a week, to stimulate the acupoints related to low back pain (GV4, BL23, BL24, BL25, and BL30, BL40 and BL58) and emotional aspects (HT3 and ST36). All participants were assessed at baseline, post-treatment and follow up (a finalization period of four weeks) using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Groups were compared using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and the effect size was calculated using Cohen ̓s d. Results: The cupping therapy group presented a lower mean VAS when compared to the sham, at post-treatment (mean difference: –2.36; standard error [SE]: 0.58; p < 0.001; “large” effect size: –0.94) and follow up (mean difference: –1.71; SE: 0.81; p < 0.042; ‘large’ effect size: –0.83). The cupping therapy group presented a lower mean ODI when compared to the sham post-treatment (mean difference: –4.68; SE: 1.85; p: 0.017; ‘large’ effect size: –0.87), although in follow-up, there was no difference between the groups (mean difference: 4.16; SE: 2.97; p: 0.17; “medium” effect size: –0.70). Conclusion: Dry cupping was more effective in improving pain and functional disability in people with persistent nonspecific low back pain when compared to the sham.

Despite the increasing adoption of gamification and its huge potential in tourism, research in gamification is still limited. As preliminary findings show that the effectiveness of gamification depends on the context of its application and the players' use of the gamified app, this paper fills in these gaps: by exploring and analysing the application of gamification in a specific e-commerce tourism context; and assessing the gamification's effectiveness by measuring the players' gamification usage and the latter's behavioural and psychological outcomes. The gamified TripAdvisor website and its Facebook enabled gamification app are used as the specific context of the study. Findings from a survey conducted on TripAdvisor users provide useful practical and theoretical implications to gamification designers and researchers alike on how game mechanics can be designed for enhancing the users' motivation, flow, task involvement and engagement with the 'play' tasks, and so, increasing the gamification's effectiveness.
Hardenability of Low Alloy Sintered Mn Steels
Zendrona Marianna,Molinari Alberto,Girardini Luca 한국분말야금학회 2006 한국분말야금학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2006 No.1
Manganese is an alloying element that improves the hardenability of steels. It could be a valid substitute in sintered steels, increasing mechanical properties. The hardenability of three low alloy Mn steels was studied to establish the influence of manganese on the heat treatments. The Grossmann approach was adopted, which uses cylinders with different diameters to induce different gradients of cooling rate in the cross section. The correlation of microstructure and microhardness to the actual cooling rate makes the results independent on the process parameters and applicable to each industrial condition, once the actual cooling rate in the parts is known.
Detection of onset of failure in prestressed strands by cluster analysis of acoustic emissions
Ercolino, Marianna,Farhidzadeh, Alireza,Salamone, Salvatore,Magliulo, Gennaro Techno-Press 2015 Structural monitoring and maintenance Vol.2 No.4
Corrosion of prestressed concrete structures is one of the main challenges that engineers face today. In response to this national need, this paper presents the results of a long-term project that aims at developing a structural health monitoring (SHM) technology for the nondestructive evaluation of prestressed structures. In this paper, the use of permanently installed low profile piezoelectric transducers (PZT) is proposed in order to record the acoustic emissions (AE) along the length of the strand. The results of an accelerated corrosion test are presented and k-means clustering is applied via principal component analysis (PCA) of AE features to provide an accurate diagnosis of the strand health. The proposed approach shows good correlation between acoustic emissions features and strand failure. Moreover, a clustering technique for the identification of false alarms is proposed.
