Structural complexity of the craniofacial trabecular bone in multiple myeloma assessed by fractal analysis

Michels, Mariane,Morais-Faria, Karina,Rivera, Cesar,Brandao, Thais Bianca,Santos-Silva, Alan Roger,Oliveira, Matheus L Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology 2021 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.51 No.-

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the structural complexity of craniofacial trabecular bone in multiple myeloma by fractal analysis of panoramic and lateral skull radiography, and to compare the fractal dimension values of healthy patients (HPs), pre-treatment patients (PTPs), and patients during bisphosphonate treatment (DTPs). Materials and Methods: Pairs of digital panoramic and lateral skull radiographs of 84 PTPs and 72 DTPs were selected. After application of exclusion criteria, 43 panoramic and 84 lateral skull radiographs of PTPs, 56 panoramic and 72 lateral skull radiographs of DTPs, and 99 panoramic radiographs of age- and sex-matched HPs were selected. The fractal dimension values from panoramic radiographs were compared among HPs, PTPs, and DTPs and between anatomical locations within patient groups using analysis of variance with the Tukey test. Fractal dimension values from lateral skull radiographs were compared between PTPs and DTPs using the Student t-test. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to assess the relationship between the mandible from panoramic radiographs and the skull from lateral skull radiographs. Intra-examiner agreement was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (α=0.05). Results: The fractal dimension values were not significantly different among HPs, PTPs, and DTPs on panoramic radiographs or between PTPs and DTPs on lateral skull radiographs (P>0.05). The mandibular body presented the highest fractal dimension values (P≤0.05). The fractal dimension values of the mandible and skull in PTPs and DTPs were not correlated. Conclusion: Fractal analysis was not sensitive for distinguishing craniofacial trabecular bone complexity in multiple myeloma patients using panoramic and lateral skull radiography.

Effect of rapid weight loss and glutamine supplementation on immunosuppression of combat athletes : a double-blind, placebo-controlled study

        Aline C. C. Tritto,Mariane T. Amano,Maria E. De Cillo,Vinicius A. Oliveira,Sandro H. Mendes,Caroline Yoshioka,Hamilton Roschel,Niels Olsen S. Camara,Bruno Gualano,Guilherme G. Artioli 한국운동재활학회 2018 JER Vol.14 No.1

The role of plasma glutamine concentration and glutamine supplemen-tation on immunosuppression was investigated in combat athletes. Twenty-three male athletes were randomly assigned to receive gluta-mine (21 g/day, n=12) or placebo (ovalbumin, n=11) for 10 days. Six athletes who did not lose weight served as controls. Athletes were as-sessed 21 days before (-21d), 1 day before (-1d) and 5 days after (+5d) a competition. Weight reduction was similar between glutamine (-8.2%± 4.1%) and placebo (-8.5%±2.4%) and negligible in control (-0.6%±1.4%). In both weight-loss groups, the majority of athletes reported symptoms of upper respiratory symptoms, as assessed by the Wisconsin upper respiratory symptom survey questionnaire. Only two athletes reported symptoms in the control group. Immune cell function remained un-changed throughout the study except for an increase in neutrophil phagocytic activity (placebo: -21d=5,251±2,986; -1d=17,428±22,374; +5d=21,125±21,934; glutamine: -21d=6,096±3,549; -1d=11,029±17,113; +5d=28,186±21,032 FI) and a minor change in monocyte phagocytic activity (placebo: -21d=4,421±3,634; -1d=3,329±6,283; +5d=3,243± 2,553; glutamine: -21d=4,051±3,186; -1d=3,106±2,625; +5d=4,981± 4,598) in both glutamine and placebo after weight loss. Plasma gluta-mine and cortisol remained unchanged across the study. creatine ki-nase levels were increased in placebo (-21d=125.2±54.1; -1d=187.2± 73.5; +5d=111.3±59.1 U/L) but not in glutamine (-21d=136.2±58.2; -1d= 168.8±65.0; +5d=129.7±64.0 U/L). Rapid weight loss increased the fre-quency and severity of infection symptoms, but this was neither associ-ated with plasma glutamine depletion nor counteracted by glutamine supplementation.

Production of Bioactive Compounds with Antitumor Activity Against Sarcoma 180 by Pleurotus sajor-caju

Ivaneliza Simionato Assis,Mariane Bonatti Chaves,Marcia Luciane Lange Silveira,Regina Maria Miranda Gern,Elisabeth Wisbeck,Agenor Furigo Ju´nior,Sandra Aparecida Furlan 한국식품영양과학회 2013 Journal of medicinal food Vol.16 No.11

This work studied the influence of culture medium composition and pH on exopolysaccharide (EPS) production by Pleurotus sajor-caju and validates the antitumor activity of the produced EPSs and of the mycelial biomass (intracellular polysaccharides [IPSs]) against Sarcoma 180 (S180) cells. The effect of the initial concentrations of (NH4)2SO4, yeast extract and soy peptone on EPS production by P. sajor-caju was studied in shake flasks. A bioreactor was used to evaluate the pH values and the initial CaCO3 and glucose concentrations. Extracts of EPSs (PE1) and IPSs obtained through two different separation processes (PM1 and PM2) were tested on mice inoculated with S180 cells. A medium containing 2.5, 1.0, and 1.0 g/L of (NH4)2SO4, yeast extract and soy peptone, respectively, provided the highest EPS concentration (0.6 g/L). The use of pH 4.0, 1.0 g/L CaCO3 and 20 g/L initial glucose concentration enhanced EPS productivity (3.84 g/L per hour). The PE1 extract promoted the highest reduction of S180 growth (86%), followed by the PM2 extract (80%); growth reduction was doseindependent for both substances. This work provides information about culture medium and conditions that enhanced the production of extracellular polysaccharides by P. sajor-caju. The results can contribute to the search for new bioactive products bringing novel aspects to the medical and pharmaceutical areas.

WORLD- MINDEDNESS IN IDA AHDIAH’S TEMAN EMPAT MUSIM

Tri Pramesti,Adeline Grace Mariane Litaay 건국대학교 아시아·디아스포라 연구소 2018 International Journal of Diaspora&Cultural Critici Vol.8 No.1

The development of Indonesian literature in the 21st century is marked by the boom of popular fiction. One of the characteristics of this fiction is the main character living in a foreign country. By living abroad, the author of this genre of fiction wants to show to the readers that the main character is world-minded. World-mindedness is suggestive of having values that rely on humanity rather than one’s nationality being the principal frame of reference. By using a foreign country as the setting, the author wants to show to the readers that the main character is world-minded. By applying the theory of world-mindedness, this study tries to see how Indonesian popular fiction shows that the Indonesian within fiction is now able to be global and local at the same time. By focusing on a novel written by an unknown writer, this study tries to see how Indonesian popular fiction embraces global connectedness.

Deposition of Dopamine and Polyethyleneimine on Polymeric Membranes: Improvement of Performance of Ultrafiltration Process

        Ingrid R. Marques,Guilherme Zin,Lidia T. Prando,Cristiana C. Bretanha,Mariane C. Proner,Elisandra Rigo,Katia Rezzadori,Cristiane da Costa,Marco Di Luccio 한국고분자학회 2020 Macromolecular Research Vol.28 No.12

Modification of the characteristics of polymeric membranes is regarded as an alternative to control the flux decline caused by the concentration polarization and the fouling in ultrafiltration (UF). This work investigated the use of dopamine (DA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) to hydrophilize the surface and to improve the performance of a 50 kDa polyethersulfone UF membrane. The hydraulic permeance of membranes was investigated for the membranes modified using a DA solution with its concentration fixed at 2 mg·mL-1 and a PEI solution with its concentration varying from 0 to 16 mg·mL-1. The membrane modified in a 16 mg·mL-1 solution of PEI presented the uppermost hydraulic permeance (33 L·h-1·m-2). This membrane and two other controls (unmodified and modified membranes with a 2 mg·mL-1 solution of DA) were further characterized for surface chemistry using Fourier transform infrared by attenuated reflectance (FTIR-ATR) and X-ray excited photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) charge (zeta potential), morphology (field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and optical interferometry), water mass gain, and performance in bovine serum albumin (BSA) UF. XPS showed an increase in the nitrogen content and a decrease in the sulfur content indicating the membrane modification. Membrane modification with DA/PEI caused an increase in hydrophilicity, which could reduce the interaction of BSA with the membrane surface. The flux of protein solutions was improved by 400%, and there was a complete recovery of the water flux after chemical cleaning of the modified membrane.

Shaping ability and apical debris extrusion after root canal preparation with rotary or reciprocating instruments: a micro-CT study

da Silva Emmanuel João Nogueira Leal,de Moura Sara Gomes,de Lima Carolina Oliveira,Barbosa Ana Flávia Almeida,Misael Waleska Florentino,Lacerda Mariane Floriano Lopes Santos,Sassone Luciana Moura 대한치과보존학회 2021 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.46 No.2

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the shaping ability of the TruShape and Reciproc Blue systems and the apical extrusion of debris after root canal instrumentation. The ProTaper Universal system was used as a reference for comparison. Materials and Methods: Thirty-three mandibular premolars with a single canal were scanned using micro-computed tomography and were matched into 3 groups (n = 11) according to the instrumentation system: TruShape, Reciproc Blue and ProTaper Universal. The teeth were accessed and mounted in an apparatus with agarose gel, which simulated apical resistance provided by the periapical tissue and enabled the collection of apically extruded debris. During root canal preparation, 2.5% sodium hypochlorite was used as an irrigant. The samples were scanned again after instrumentation. The percentage of unprepared area, removed dentin, and volume of apically extruded debris were analyzed. The data were analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance and the Tukey test for multiple comparisons at a 5% significance level. Results: No significant differences in the percentage of unprepared area were observed among the systems (p > 0.05). ProTaper Universal presented a higher percentage of dentin removal than the TruShape and Reciproc Blue systems (p < 0.05). The systems produced similar volumes of apically extruded debris (p > 0.05). Conclusions: All systems caused apically extruded debris, without any significant differences among them. TruShape, Reciproc Blue, and ProTaper Universal presented similar percentages of unprepared area after root canal instrumentation; however, ProTaper Universal was associated with higher dentin removal than the other systems.

        Enduring, Endearing Korea

Marian Werner 동국대학교 불교학술원 2007 International Journal of Buddhist Thought & Cultur Vol.9 No.-

The author and her husband paid their eighth visit to South Korea in 2007. They would like to return many more times, but are not getting any younger and the day is inevitably approaching when they will have to put away their maps and leaflets and rely on wonderful memories and their photographs and video films. Starting in 1999 they have spent a total of twenty-four weeks exploring different regions of the country, with a particular interest in seeking out Buddhist temples. Last year they went back to four places already somewhat familiar to them: Seoul, Seoraksan, Gyeongju and Busan. On this occasion they visited thirty-nine temples and hermitages, twenty-four for the first time. The following account is not a travelogue but is simply an Englishwoman’s attempt to set down some of the remarkable characteristics of Korean culture which have drawn her and her husband to return over and over again. As on every other visit, there were surprises in store, from a country which has endured numerous setbacks over the centuries but has managed to preserve strong links with its past and to come up smiling.

        Why Korea? why buddhism?

Marian Werner 동국대학교 불교학술원 2007 International Journal of Buddhist Thought & Cultur Vol.8 No.-

In this essentially personal article the author, an Englishwoman, describes how her interest in Korea started and developed, and what drew her from her Christian roots towards Buddhism. A student of English literature, she found in poems such as those by John Keats a poignant expression of the unsatisfactoriness of life which is the basis of the first Noble Truth expounded by Gautama Buddha. She and her husband became acquainted with the richness of Korean culture through an exhibition in London, and subsequently through reading various books, but it was not until 1999 that they paid their first visit to South Korea. What they found so entranced them that they have been back six more times. Their main interest has been in seeing as many Buddhist temples and hermitages as possible, and so far they have visited about 170. No two temples are alike, and all are treasure-houses. In exploring all the halls open to visitors, the author was intrigued to see the shrines to Sansin and the ubiquitous tiger, and has since made a point of paying her respects to the mountain spirits who, she believes, occupy an important role in Korean tradition and seem even to have the power to change the weather. The beauty of Korean sculpture, architecture and painting, together with the exquisite natural surroundings in which most Korean Buddhist temples are located, is part of the reason for the author’s enthusiasm, but more especially there is the way of life demonstrated by the monks and nuns who are resident in the temples. She wonders if eventually her karma will bring her in that direction.

Phenolic Compounds in Plant Foods : Chemistry and Health Benefits

Marian Naczk,Fereidoon Shahidi 한국식품영양과학회 2003 Preventive Nutrition and Food Science Vol.8 No.2

Phenolic compounds in food and plant materials belong to the simple phenols, phenolic acids, coumarins, flavonoids, stilbenes, tannins, lignans and lignins, all of which are considered as secondary plant metabolites. These compounds may be synthesized by plants during normal development or in response to stress conditions. Phenolics are not distributed uniformly in plants. Insoluble phenolics are components of cell walls while soluble ones are present in vacuoles. A cursory account of phenolics of cereals, beans, pulses, fruits, vegetables and oilseeds is provided in this overview. The information on the bioavailability and absorption of plant phenolics remains fragmentary and diverse. Pharmacological potentials of food phenolics are extensively evaluated. However, there are many challenges that must be overcome in order to fully understand both the function of phenolics in plant as well as their health effects.
