Distant Reading, Digital Humanities and the Changing Field of Early Irish Fiction: Micro versus Macro, More or Less?

Vol.60 No.1

While recent years have seen the availability of some truly innovative digital resources in the international field of literary studies, there is yet little sustained investigation, reflection or critique by humanities scholars of the new forms of knowledge thus generated, or of the new scales and types of research made possible, or of the new kinds of intellectual brokerage which may be necessary to link digital and analogue resources. The current debate concerning distant and close reading offers an opportunity to advance this necessary wider analysis. The chosen case study is the recently completed online resource Guide to Irish Fiction: 1650- 1900, accessible at http://www.lgif.ie (PI Margaret Kelleher), an electronic version of the Loebers` Guide to Irish Fiction, a bibliography of some 5,000 titles. This project provides a concrete example of the challenges and opportunities presented by distant reading, and relatedly by new developments in digital humanities, to the field of eighteenth and nineteenth-century Irish fiction and to the established canon of Irish fiction. The paper situates this project in the context of current debates on the research significance of macroanalyses and distant readings, with specific reference to the potential gains for previously neglected domains of national literatures.

The Impact of Virgin Coconut Oil and High-Oleic Safflower Oil on Body Composition, Lipids, and Inflammatory Markers in Postmenopausal Women

2017 Journal of medicinal food Vol.20 No.4

This randomized crossover study compared the impact of virgin coconut oil (VCO) to safflower oil (SO) on body composition and cardiovascular risk factors. Twelve postmenopausal women (58.8 ± 3.7 year) consumed 30 mL VCO or SO for 28 days, with a 28-day washout. Anthropometrics included body weight and hip and waist circumference. Fat percent for total body, android and gynoid, fat mass, and lean mass were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Women maintained their typical diet recording 28 days of food records during the study. Results were analyzed with SPSS v24 with significance at P ≤ .05. Comparisons are reported as paired t-test since no intervention sequence effect was observed. VCO significantly raised total cholesterol, TC (+18.2 ± 22.8 mg/dL), low-density lipoprotein (+13.5 ± 16.0 mg/dL), and high-density lipoprotein, HDL (+6.6 ± 7.5 mg/dL). SO did not significantly change lipid values. TC and HDL were significantly different between test oils. The TC/HDL ratio change showed a neutral effect of both VCO and SO. One person had adverse reactions to VCO and increased inflammation. VCO decreased IL-1β for each person who had a detected sample. The impact of VCO and SO on other cytokines varied on an individual basis. This was the first study evaluating the impact of VCO on body composition in Caucasian postmenopausal women living in the United States. Results are suggestive that individuals wishing to use coconut oil in their diets can do so safely, but more studies need to be conducted with larger sample sizes, diverse populations, and more specific clinical markers such as particle size.

      • Strategies for Faculty Development in Nursing Education

Vol.2011 No.10

Nursing curricula and scholarly activities are shaped by complex and competing forces. At present there are powerful drivers for extensive curriculum renewal: This presents an opportunity for the nursing professing to develop creative curriculum blueprints that accommodate and lead innovation. Academics and clinicians involved in the education of nurses must aim to build their own and student capabilities and maintain processes to improve and sustain graduate outcomes that are consistent with consumer and health service needs. Curricula must be responsive to innovations in practice and learning and teaching. Knowing about the trends, challenges and drivers from both the health care and the higher education sectors is central to faculty development and capacity building. Informed direction can come from a range of sources including the government, professional literature, and external advisory committees and student feedback. The curriculum renewal process itself ought to challenge existing long held ideas, practices, and sacred cows within the health and higher education sectors. There is much to consider and importantly curriculum developers need to be mindful of reform within the health sector and health workforce education, as well as the concomitant vision and requirements of the nursing profession. Curriculum must develop more than discipline knowledge and skills : it must provide an infrastructure for generic abilities both social and intellectual in order to better prepare students for the registered nurse role. This paper discusses a number of forces that are essential to consider in curriculum development in undergraduate nursing education.

The reintegration of Tongan postgraduate scholars after study abroad: knowledge utilisation and resituation

Margaret Franken,Nautalus Tuituiovai Kaho Langi,Christopher Branson 서울대학교 교육연구소 2016 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.17 No.4

Higher education has seen increasing educational mobility as students finance themselves or get financial support from their families to study abroad (Shields Comp Educ Rev 57(4):609–636, 2013; Verbik and Lazanowski in World education news and reviews. http://www.wes.org/educators/pdf/StudentMobility.pdf, 2007). Another significant source of support, particularly for students in developing countries, is that from international aid scholarships. This research presents the reported experiences of 15 Tongan postgraduate scholars who successfully completed overseas postgraduate studies. The study focuses on the perceptions of qualifications and of scholars, as well as knowledge utilisation and knowledge resituation in and beyond the workplace. Knowledge utilisation, sometimes referred to as knowledge management, is how others support returnees’ to share and make use of their knowledge; while knowledge resituation is a personal and individual process in which knowledge gained in one context is tuned to and made use of in a new context (Eraut in Expertise development: the transition between school and work. Open Universiteit, Heerlen, pp 52–73, 2004a, Pedagogy and practice. Culture and identities. Sage, London, 2008; Franken 2012). Given the challenges the scholars faced, we advocate for a more explicit recognition of what knowledge and skills returning scholars bring home, and a more proactive and strategic use of these by their workplaces in particular.

      • P239 : Efficacy and safety of oral acitretin in chronic hand eczema

( Margaret Song ),( Won Ku Lee ),( Gun Wook Kim ),( Hyun Ho Jo ),( Won Jeong Kim ),( Je Ho Mun ),( Hoon Soo Kim ),( Hyun Chang Ko ),( Moon Bum Kim ),( Byung Soo Kim ) 대한피부과학회 2014 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.66 No.2

Background: Chronic hand eczema (CHE) may severely reduce patient``s quality of life. CHE refractory to topical corticosteroids currently have limited treatment options suited for chronic use. In demand of safe new therapy, oral alitretinoin, 9-cis retinoic acid, was proposed, but the economic burden limits its broad use. Acitretin is a well-known second generation vitamin A derivative, widely used in palmoplantar psoriasis with less cost. Objectives: To assess the efficacy and safety of oral acitretin in chronic hand eczema patients. Methods: A total of 38 patients diagnosed with CHE were enrolled in the prospective open-label study. All patients were administered with oral acitretin, start dose of 10mg twice daily and tapered to 10mg once daily for up to 24 weeks. CHD severity was evaluated using a 5-grade physicial global assessment (PGA) scale and the modified total lesion symptom score (mTLSS). Results: Clinical responses, defined as clear or almost clear, were achieved in up to 34% (10/29) of patients. The proportion achieving PGA of clear, almost clear or mild was 58% (17/29). The improvement was more remarkable in hyperkeratotic type than other types of hand eczema. No serious side effects were reported except of cheilitis in 2 patients and abdominal discomfort in 3 patients. Conclusion: Oral acitretin is well-tolerated with effectively improving chronic hand eczema, especially in hyperkeratotic type.

Korean Red Ginseng Powder in the Treatment of Melasma

        Margaret Song,Je-Ho Mun,Hyun-Chang Ko,Byung-Soo Kim,Moon-Bum Kim(김문범) 고려인삼학회 2011 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.35 No.2

Exposure to the sun, ultraviolet radiation, and oxidative stress are the chief etiologic factors responsible for melasma. The ingredients of Korean red ginseng powder, which include ginsenoside and phenolic compounds, have antioxidative effects and reduce ultraviolet B-induced pigmentation. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Korean red ginseng powder in patients with melasma. In 25 female patients, 3 g of Korean red ginseng powder was orally administered for a 24 week period. The level of pigmentation and erythema were determined and clinical improvement was evaluated by the melasma area and severity index (MASI), melasma quality of life scale (MELASQoL), and patient- and investigator-rated global improvement scale. After 24 weeks, the MASI score decreased from 8.8 to 5.6, and MELASQoL showed improvement in 91% of patients (p<0.05). The mean level of pigmentation decreased from 184.3 to 159.7 and erythema levels decreased from 253.6 to 216.4 (p<0.05). Additionally, 74% of the patients showed some improvement in both patient- and investigator-rated global improvement scales at week 24. Korean red ginseng powder was well tolerated by most of the patients. In conclusion, Korean red ginseng powder showed good tolerability and beneficial effects in patients with melasma. The use of Korean red ginseng would be counted as a useful adjunctive therapy for patients with melasma.

      • FCT 9 : Photodynamic therapy combined with laser ablation: promising therapeutic alternative in extrammary Paget`s disease?

( Margaret Song ),( Hyang Suk You ),( Hyunho Jo ),( Jeho Mun ),( Hyun Chang Ko ),( Byung Soo Kim ),( Moon Bum Kim ),( Hoon Soo Kim ) 대한피부과학회 2013 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.65 No.2

Background: Surgical treatment is considered as the treatment of choice in extrammary Paget`s disease(EMPD),but there still are demands of alternative treatment due to anatomic location of tumor and extensive surgical defect. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is promising but limited alternative treatment with inconsistent efficacy in EMPD Objectives: To assess the efficacy of laser ablation followed by photodynamic therapy with methyl-aminolevulinate(MAL) in EMPD Methods: Thirteen patients diagnosed with noninvasive EMPD without distant metastasis were enrolled in the study. All patients received photodynamic therapy with MAL as a photosensitizer and intense pulsed light as a light source, following CO2 laser ablation. Photodynamic therapy after laser ablation was performed 1 to 13 times depending on the presence of remnant lesion Results: Nine male and 4 female patients with mean age of 68.2 were included in the analysis. Reduction in size of EMPD was observed in all patients except one even after first treatment. At 6 months, clinical complete response(CR) was observed in 5 patients (38.5%) and partial response in 7 patients, but only 2 patients eventually reached CR Conclusion: Photodynamic therapy alleviates symptoms and is effective in reducing the size of tumor. Although, it holds limitation in achieving clinical and histological cure, even after multiple treatment, with very long downtime. It should be considered as a conservative or preoperative treatment of EMPD rather than curative treatment.

        Yeats’s Double Visions

Vol.36 No.-

Yeats’s work stresses the creation of multiple selves in his poetry and other work. Yeats also revised obsessively, and the differences between versions of his works are important in finding their meanings. The philosophical book A Vision is especially many-faceted, emphasizing multiple aspects of the personality, stages of the soul, and versions of historical and spiritual truth. A Vision is influenced by Yeats’s small monograph Per Amica Silentia Lunae, a prose work that we can think of as itself double-facing: the end of the romantic Yeats and the beginning of the modernist Yeats. A Vision is itself two books. The differences between the two books (one version published in 1925 and one in 1937) illustrate differences in Yeats’s work in the 1920s and the 1930s. Each book points to itself as existing in one moment rather than standing for atemporal truth. Recognizing A Vision as a book that is two books also draws attention to the importance of this work as co-authored, in the sense that it is the result of the occult collaboration between Yeats and his wife George.
