      • Micro Communities of Practice and EU’s Foreign Policy: Rome, Brussels, and Paris1

        ( Marchi Ludovica ) 한국EU학회 2021 Asia-Pacific Journal of EU Studies Vol.19 No.1

Although the practice approach and the community of practice have generally been studied, the relationship between communities of practice has mostly escaped the attention of EU foreign policy scholars. This empirical investigation contributes to this relatively less explored area. Its central question constitutes whether and how the practice approach makes sense of the actions of micro communities of practice focused on European foreign policy, when practices involve actions at the local, national and European/supranational levels. It motivates an interest in the practice mechanism, since this perspective allows the identification of otherwise unexplored experiences that are critical to the functioning of European foreign policy. In fact, it argues that a practice approach helps us to distinguish different understandings of the EU that might be crucial for the performance of European foreign policy. It applies the practice approach to three micro communities of practice which constitute the case study: in Rome, Brussels and Paris, all of them focused on ‘European foreign policy and/on China’s Belt and Road initiative’. Methodologically, it combines a discourse analysis with content analysis, and shows that the use of these and of the practice perspective demonstrates acceptance of the EU, resistance to it, and suggestions about improving the EU’s foreign policy. The analysis of the results concentrates on theory and policy. Regarding the theory, the findings demonstrate that the practice approach makes sense of actions of communities of practice operating at a local, national, and European/supranational level. Regarding policy, the findings provide evidence that the practices examined here contribute suggestions regarding new substance for European foreign policy. The investigation employs sources derived from the author’s conversation at the citizens’ level in Rome in the context of China and the EU; it draws on the European institutions’ official documents to explore policy making in Brussels regarding China; and uses a diplomatic strategy to investigate a Europe that speaks with one voice, in Paris.

      • February 2022: Russia And Europe’s Challenging Time The Practice Approach

        ( Ludovica Marchi ) 한국EU학회 2023 Asia-Pacific Journal of EU Studies Vol.21 No.1

Putin’s Russia’s contentious position, that culminated in the incursion into Ukraine in 2022, creates a puzzling situation within international affairs and European politics. Informed by Bourdieu’s sociology and Neumann and Pouliot’s study of practice theory and approach, this empirical investigation explores whether and how the ‘lack of fit between practices and the field’ where they are performed has important consequences that hamper security. It deals with practices originated by Moscow, at intervals interacting with the European Union. By introducing ‘confrontational’ and ‘contentious’ positions as originating from ‘background knowledge’, this enquiry adds an extra layer of analysis to the practice logic with regard to the theory. By testing the working of the practice perspective concerning this investigation’s aim, this enquiry demonstrates the virtue of the practice approach in terms of policy.

      • COUNTRY OF ORIGIN AND COUNTRY PRODUCT FAMILIARITY AS DETERMINANTS OF RETAIL BUYERS INTENTION TO BUY

        Gianluca Marchi,Elisa Martinelli,Marina Vignola 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2015 Global Fashion Management Conference Vol.2015 No.06

The paper analyses the effect of Country Related Product Image (CRPI), as Country of Origin construct, and Country Product Familiarity (CPF) on retailers’ Intention to Buy (INTB). Despite the relevance and richness of the country-of-origin (COO) research, this body of literature is mainly based on investigating purchasing behaviours of consumers rather than professional buyers. Therefore, the effect that this construct exerts on retail buyers requires further understanding. Moreover, the study contributes to the literature by testing the impact of CRPI, and its multidimensional nature, jointly with CPF. A cross product analysis is considered to verify whether these effects on retailers’ INTB change in relation to specific product categories. The research hypotheses are tested by conducting a survey on a sample of 257 Chinese retail buyers and considering two different Italian product categories: shoes, that is a traditional fashion sensitive product, and ceramic tiles, that is a less fashion-based product whose technical attributes are more prominent for buyers’ evaluations. Results show that 1) the CRPI is a multidimensional construct that influences the intention of Chinese retail buyers to buy Italian products; 2) when CPF is considered, the impact of CRPI dimensions on intention to buy decreases; 3) the joint effect of CRPI dimensions and CPF on retailers’ INTB varies according to the product considered. Theoretical and managerial implications are derived.

The country of origin effect on retailer buying behavior: a cross-country analysis on Italian footwear

Gianluca Marchi,Elisa Martinelli,Bernardo Balboni 한국마케팅과학회 2014 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.5 No.2

The paper analyzes the effect of country of origin (COO) multidimensionality on theintention to buy Italian footwear in samples of retail buyers operating in three differentcountries, namely Spain, Russia and China. Specifically, it proposes a model aimed at testing the relationships among three different country image dimensions – CountryImage (CI), Product–Country Image (PCI), and Country-Related Product Image(CRPI) – and the retail buyers’ intention to purchase products originating in Italy, while also verifying the effect of product–country congruity (FIT). A total of 483questionnaires were collected from samples of Spanish, Russian, and Chinese fashion retailers and processed applying Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Results show that COO influences retail buyers through a causal link within the three COOs’dimensions, reinforced by the FIT, as the CI effect is fully mediated by PCI. Theoretical and managerial implications for fashion firms are derived.

      • Myanmar`s Diversification of its Foreign Relations: The European Union

        ( Ludovica Marchi ) 한국EU학회 2017 Asia-Pacific Journal of EU Studies Vol.15 No.1

This article focuses on the former Myanmar President Thein Sein`s efforts to counterbalance Beijing`s sway over Yangon and the EU`s attempts to identify a role for itself in the region. It aims to discuss the assumption that, by sponsoring the 2016 Special Partnership for Democracy, Peace and Prosperity with Myanmar, the EU was seeking to promote its role in Southeast Asia. It focuses on a few developments that contribute towards enhancing the EU`s involvement in cooperating with Myanmar. It examines how the former Myanmar President entertained diplomatic relations, in 2013, with the European capitals and the EU, and questions whether President Sein was possibly making efforts to free the country from subjection to other powers, specifically China. It discusses how Yangon`s slight distancing of itself from Beijing, combined with Sein`s opening up towards Europe, played the effect of boosting political activity regarding Myanmar at the EU level. It explores the EU`s policies on Myanmar and whether these attempt to respond to Sein`s search for assistance. It, lastly, assesses the article`s assumption. The article employs EU official documents, Southeast Asian and western media, scholarly works and other secondary publications to contribute to the analysis.

Pelleting in Associated with Sodium Monensin Increases the Conjugated Linoleic Acids Concentration in the Milk of Dairy Cows Fed Canola Seeds

De Marchi, Francilaine Eloise,Romero, Jakeline Vieira,Damasceno, Julio Cesar,Grande, Paula Adriana,Zeoula, Lucia Maria, dos Santos, Geraldo Tadeu Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2015 Animal Bioscience Vol.28 No.8

To evaluate the effects of the pelleting and the addition of sodium monensin on production, the chemical and lipid composition of milk and butter physical characteristics, 4 Holstein dairy cows (135 days of lactation) with an average milk production of 14.7 kg/d, were supplemented with a concentrate containing ground canola seeds. The cows were assigned to a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design with a $2{\times}2$ factorial arrangement of treatments: i) ground maize, soybean meal, mineral and vitamin supplements, and ground canola seeds (CG); ii) CG concentrate with 31.5 mg of monensin added per kg of dry matter (DM); iii) CG pelleted concentrate; iv) CG concentrate with monensin addition pelleted. There was no difference in milk production and composition. The addition of monensin increased milk concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), the PUFA/saturated fatty acids (SFA) ratio, and omega 6. The pelleting increased the concentration of monounsaturated fatty acids, the PUFA/SFA ratio, and the omega 6/omega 3 ratio, but decreased the concentration of SFA. The association between pelleting and the addition of monensin increased the concentration of conjugated linoleic acids by 46.9%. The physical characteristics of butter were not affected by the evaluated diets. We concluded that the concentrate with 31.5 mg of monensin added per kg DM basis combined with the pelleting improves the lipid composition of milk from Holstein cows that are on pasture and supplemented with ground canola seeds, without changing the production, milk composition, and spreadability of butter.

Machine-Learning for Prescription Patterns: Random Forest in the Prediction of Dose and Number of Antipsychotics Prescribed to People with Schizophrenia

        Mattia Marchi,Giacomo Galli,Gianluca Fiore,Andrew Mackinnon,Giorgio Mattei,Fabrizio Starace,Gian M. Galeazzi 대한정신약물학회 2022 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.20 No.3

Objective: We aimed to predict antipsychotic prescription patterns for people with schizophrenia using machine learning (ML) algorithms. Methods: In a cross-sectional design, a sample of community mental health service users (SUs; n = 368) with a primary diagnosis of schizophrenia was randomly selected. Socio-demographic and clinical features, including the number, total dose, and route of administration of the antipsychotic treatment were recorded. Information about the number and the length of psychiatric hospitalization was retrieved. Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression and ML algorithms (i.e., random forest [RF], supported vector machine, K-nearest neighborhood, and Naïve Bayes) were used to estimate the predictors of total antipsychotic dosage and prescription of antipsychotic polytherapy (APP). Results: The strongest predictor of the total dose was APP. The number of Community Mental Health Centers (CMHC) contacts was the most important predictor of APP and, with APP omitted, of dosage. Treatment with anticholinergics predicted APP, emphasizing the strong correlation between APP and higher antipsychotic dose. RF performed better than OLS regression and the other ML algorithms in predicting both antipsychotic dose (root square mean error = 0.70, R2 = 0.31) and APP (area under the receiving operator curve = 0.66, true positive rate = 0.41, and true negative rate = 0.78). Conclusion: APP is associated with the prescription of higher total doses of antipsychotics. Frequent attenders at CMHCs, and SUs recently hospitalized are often treated with APP and higher doses of antipsychotics. Future prospective studies incorporating standardized clinical assessments for both psychopathological severity and treatment efficacy are needed to confirm these findings.

A Comparative Study of Socio-cultural Factors Contributing to Maternal Mortality in Urban and Rural Areas of the Southern Part of Edo State, Nigeria.

Chinwe Lucy Marchie,Francisca Chika Anyanwu 숙명여자대학교 아세아여성연구소 2008 Asian Women Vol.24 No.3

Maternal mortality is a major health problem in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study investigated the difference in socio-cultural factors contributing to maternal mortality in urban and rural areas of in the Southern part of Edo State (Nigeria). The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study that involved two thousand one hundred and fifty seven (2,157) women of reproductive age selected through a multi-stage sampling random sampling technique. Data collection was done by the means of (ⅰ) a self developed structured and validated questionnaire with a reliability index of 0.82, (ⅱ) focus group discussion (FGD) and, (ⅲ) an in-depth interview guide. The results showed no significant difference between urban and rural women in decision making power (x² = 0.63; P > .5). Early marriage and early child bearing are significantly more prevalent in the urban areas than in rural areas (x² = 205.33, df = 6; P > .5). Early marriage, which is traditionally a rural phenomenon, seem to be shifting to urban communities.
