Has Retrieval Technology in Vertical Site Search Systems Improved over the Years? A Holistic Evaluation for Real Web Systems

Mandl, Thomas,Womser-Hacker, Christa,Gatzke, Natalia Korea Institute of Science and Technology Informat 2015 Journal of Information Science Theory and Practice Vol.3 No.4

Evaluation of retrieval systems is mostly limited to laboratory settings and rarely considers changes of performance over time. This article presents an evaluation of retrieval systems for internal Web site search systems between the years 2006 and 2011. A holistic evaluation methodology for real Web sites was developed which includes tests for functionality, search quality, and user interaction. Among other sites, one set of 20 Web site search systems was evaluated three times in different years and no substantial improvement could be shown. It is surprising that the communication between site and user still leads to very poor results in many cases. Overall, the quality of these search systems could be improved, and several areas for improvement are apparent from our evaluation. For a comparison, Google’s site search function was also tested with the same tasks.

Patent Document Similarity Based on Image Analysis Using the SIFT-Algorithm and OCR-Text

        박정범,Thomas Mandl,김도완 한국콘텐츠학회 2017 International Journal of Contents Vol.13 No.4

Images are an important element in patents and many experts use images to analyze a patent or to check differences between patents. However, there is little research on image analysis for patents partly because image processing is an advanced technology and typically patent images consist of visual parts as well as of text and numbers. This study suggests two methods for using image processing; the Scale Invariant Feature Transform(SIFT) algorithm and Optical Character Recognition(OCR). The first method which works with SIFT uses image feature points. Through feature matching, it can be applied to calculate the similarity between documents containing these images. And in the second method, OCR is used to extract text from the images. By using numbers which are extracted from an image, it is possible to extract the corresponding related text within the text passages. Subsequently, document similarity can be calculated based on the extracted text. Through comparing the suggested methods and an existing method based only on text for calculating the similarity, the feasibility is achieved. Additionally, the correlation between both the similarity measures is low which shows that they capture different aspects of the patent content.

      • Knowledge Management Strategies today – An empirical study

        Nils Bangert,Thomas Mandl,Sangwook Kim 한국경영정보학회 2018 한국경영정보학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2018 No.5

Knowledge Management has been an important topic ever since the early 21st century. With an ever-growing fundamental base of understanding and the introduction of technological innovations further enabling the leverage of knowledge management, it is to assume that companies nowadays integrate knowledge management strategies into their business concept. This thesis will conduct research on the most important strategies of knowledge management throughout the last 20 years, process them and further on use these insights to build a questionnaire. The questionnaire will be used to evaluate enterprises knowledge management strategies and give an overview of the actual standing of the topics importance in the corporate landscape. Additionally, data will be empirically analyzed and processed to extend the gathered insights and point out weaknesses and opportunities in knowledge management strategies. The conclusion of this thesis will give enterprises results to work with and optimize their current strategies or to give startups a summarized overview of ways to leverage knowledge management to enhance their business processes.

      • Localization of a MOOC – A Comparison of Korean and European MOOCs

        Jan Ernst Schweer,Thomas Mandl,Daegene Song 한국경영정보학회 2018 한국경영정보학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2018 No.5

This research is about MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). The idea behind these courses is to offer education to anybody, anywhere and often free of charge. The first MOOC was created in 2008 which shows that the concept is quite young and little research has been conducted in some aspects of these courses. To educate people all over the world, a localization must be done to ensure that people have the option of understanding the content without being locked out due to language/cultural barriers. For this work I am looking at the required localization processes for MOOCs, which properties need to be changed and want both participants and content creators expect from them. The identification of cultural markers, trying to answer the question of who owns the copyright of the content and many more issues need to be dealt with. By doing this I will be able to create a list of suggested adjustments that need to be considered when localizing an online course.

Text Classification for Patents: Experiments with Unigrams, Bigrams and Different Weighting Methods

Im, ChanJong,Kim, DoWan,Mandl, Thomas The Korea Contents Association 2017 International Journal of Contents Vol.13 No.2

Patent classification is becoming more critical as patent filings have been increasing over the years. Despite comprehensive studies in the area, there remain several issues in classifying patents on IPC hierarchical levels. Not only structural complexity but also shortage of patents in the lower level of the hierarchy causes the decline in classification performance. Therefore, we propose a new method of classification based on different criteria that are categories defined by the domain's experts mentioned in trend analysis reports, i.e. Patent Landscape Report (PLR). Several experiments were conducted with the purpose of identifying type of features and weighting methods that lead to the best classification performance using Support Vector Machine (SVM). Two types of features (noun and noun phrases) and five different weighting schemes (TF-idf, TF-rf, TF-icf, TF-icf-based, and TF-idcef-based) were experimented on.

Gallbladder Paraganglioma Associated with SDHD Mutation: a Potential Pitfall on 18F-FDOPA PET Imaging

        Zahraa Abdul Sater,Abhishek Jha,Adel Mandl,Sheila K. Mangelen,Jorge A. Carrasquillo,Alexander Ling,Melissa K. Gonzales,Osorio Lopes Abath Neto,Markku Miettinen,Karen T. Adams,Pavel Nockel,Mustapha El 대한핵의학회 2019 핵의학 분자영상 Vol.53 No.2

A 36-year-old male patient initially presented with hypertension, tinnitus, bilateral carotid masses, a right jugular foramen, and a periaortic arch mass with an elevated plasma dopamine level but an otherwise normal biochemical profile. On surveillance MRI 4 years after initial presentation, he was found to have a 2.2-cm T2 hyperintense lesion with arterial enhancement adjacent to the gallbladder, which demonstrated avidity on 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CTand retrospectively on 18F-FDOPA PET/CT but was nonavid on 18F-FDG PET/CT. Biochemical work-up including plasma catecholamines, metanephrines, and chromogranin A levels were found to be within normal limits. This lesion was surgically resected and was confirmed to be a paraganglioma (PGL) originating from the gallbladder wall on histopathology. Pheochromocytoma (PHEO) and PGL are rare tumors of the autonomic nervous system. Succinate dehydrogenase subunit D (SDHD) pathogenic variants of the succinate dehydrogenase complex are usually involved in parasympathetic, extra-adrenal, multifocal head, and neck PGLs.We report an unusual location of PGL in the gallbladder associated with SDHD mutation which could present as a potential pitfall on 18F-FDOPA PET/CT as its normal excretion occurs through biliary system and gallbladder. This case highlights the superiority of 68Ga-DOTATATE in comparison to 18F-FDOPA and 18F-FDG in the detection of SDHD-related parasympathetic PGL.

Design and Implementation of a Framework for Context-Aware Preference Queries

        Patrick Roocks,Markus Endres,Alfons Huhn,Werner Kießling,Stefan Mandl 한국정보과학회 2012 Journal of Computing Science and Engineering Vol.6 No.4

In this paper we present a framework for a novel kind of context-aware preference query composition whereby queries for the Preference SQL system are created. We choose a commercial e-business platform for outdoor activities as a use case and develop a context model for this domain within our framework. The suggested model considers explicit user input, domain-specific knowledge, contextual knowledge and location-based sensor data in a comprehensive approach. Aside from the theoretical background of preferences, the optimization of preference queries and our novel generator based model we give special attention to the aspects of the implementation and the practical experiences. We provide a sketch of the implementation and summarize our user studies which have been done in a joint project with an industrial partner.
