        Tri-spine horseshoe crab, Tachypleus tridentatus (L.) in Sabah, Malaysia: the adult body sizes and population estimate

        The dwindling number of the tri-spine horseshoe crab, Tachypleus tridentatus has been reported globally and its status in Malaysia is not much known. Study on dimorphism in adult body sizes and population size estimation were conducted using capture–mark–recapture method of adult T. tridentatus in Tawau, Sabah. Camry the estimated population sizes of T. tridentatus ranged from 182 to 1095 with 95% confident limits of 56–42,942 individuals (Schnabel formula). The multivariate discriminant Hotelling’s T2 test verifies the sexual size dimorphism among the adult T. tridentatus with 97.7% separation among sexes (Hotelling’s T2 = 778.49, F = 152.85, p < 0.001) with females being larger and heavier than the male individuals. The number estimated from the study is the first reported for T. tridentatus in Malaysia, particularly in Sabah. Even though this number may slightly overestimate the actual population size in the area owing to the low number of individuals recaptured, for now it could serve as baseline data for horseshoe crab management purpose.

        Microstructure and Properties of Novel Heat Resistant Al–Ce–Cu Alloy for Additive Manufacturing

        The microstructure and properties of the novel heat resistant Al–3Ce–7Cu alloy produced by selective laser melting wereinvestigated. Fine Al11Ce3and Al6.5CeCu6.5eutectic phases were found in the microstructure. Annealing at temperatures inthe 250–400 °C range leads to a decrease in the hardness. Hardness has larger values after annealing at 350 and 400 °C thanat 250 °C due to the precipitation of nanosized particles. The low hardness after quenching and aging at 190 °C is causedby quench stress relief and the absence of aging hardening because of poor solid solution. The as-printed yield strength,ultimate tensile strength and elongation are 274 MPa, 456 MPa and 4.4%, respectively. High mechanical properties of theAl–3Ce–7Cu alloy were demonstrated by high temperature tension and compression tests.

      • PCE : A Knowledge Base of Semantically Disambiguated Contents

        With the Semantic Web people participate more actively in the building of information and take on an active role in enriching collaborative knowledge bases with user-generated contents. Moreover, new online resources have quickly gained impact on information management, such as the social bookmarking systems, which enable users to store, manage and share tagged Web content through folksonomies. These social tools allow users to associate free chosen keywords (tags) with Web content with the aim of providing an efficient navigation system through the heterogeneous amount of information available on the Web. However, the association of tags is totally arbitrary so that the use of synonyms, homonyms and new slang terms often hampers the Web information retrieval. Our project proposes the development of an innovative social bookmarking system based on a priori classification with semantic tags and structured categories extracted from online linguistic resources, which aims at disambiguating Web Content. According to this approach, each content will be described through two axes: a vertical one, concerning a hierarchical taxonomic classification and a horizontal one, dealing with a folksonomic classification. The final aim is to create a collaborative knowledge base of semantically disambiguated contents and to achieve more precise results in Web retrieval.

        Unprecedented Tris-Phosphido-Bridged Triangular Clusters with 42 Valence Electrons. Chemical, Electrochemical and Computational Studies of their Formation and Stability

        <P>This paper presents the synthesis and structural characterization of the unprecedented tris-phosphido-bridged compounds Pt<SUB>3</SUB>(μ-PBu<SUP><I>t</I></SUP><SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB>X<SUB>3</SUB> (X = Cl, Br, I), having only 42 valence electrons, while up to now analogous clusters typically have 44e<SUP>–</SUP>. The new species were obtained by an apparent bielectronic oxidation of the 44e<SUP>–</SUP> monohalides Pt<SUB>3</SUB>(μ-PBu<SUP><I>t</I></SUP><SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB>(CO)<SUB>2</SUB>X with the corresponding dihalogen X<SUB>2</SUB>. Their X-ray structures are close to the <I>D</I><SUB>3<I>h</I></SUB> symmetry, similarly to the 44e<SUP>–</SUP> analogues with three terminal carbonyl ligands. The products were also obtained by electrochemical oxidation of the same monohalides in the presence of the corresponding halide. In a detailed study on the formation of Pt<SUB>3</SUB>(μ-PBu<SUP><I>t</I></SUP><SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB>I<SUB>3</SUB>, the redox potentials indicated that I<SUB>2</SUB> can only perform the first monoelectronic oxidation but is unsuited for the second one. Accordingly, the 43e<SUP>–</SUP> intermediate [Pt<SUB>3</SUB>(μ-PBu<SUP><I>t</I></SUP><SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB>(CO)<SUB>2</SUB>I]<SUP>+</SUP> was ascertained to play a key role. Another piece of information is that, together with the fully oxidized product Pt<SUB>3</SUB>(μ-PBu<SUP><I>t</I></SUP><SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB>I<SUB>3</SUB>, the transient 44e<SUP>–</SUP> species [Pt<SUB>3</SUB>(μ-PBu<SUP><I>t</I></SUP><SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB>(CO)<SUB>3</SUB>]<SUP>+</SUP> is formed in the early steps of the reaction. In order to extract detailed information on the formation pathway, involving both terminal ligand substitutions and electron transfer processes, a DFT investigation has been performed and all the possible intermediates have been defined together with their associated energy costs. The profile highlights many important aspects, such as the formation of an appropriate couple of 43e<SUP>–</SUP> intermediates having different sets of terminal coligands, and suitable redox potentials for the transfer of one electron. Optimizations of 45e<SUP>–</SUP> associative intermediates in the ligand substitution reactions indicate their possible involvement in the redox process with reduction of the overall energy cost.         Improved efficiency of polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells by the addition of Cu(II)-porphyrin-oligothiophene conjugates

        Ternary organic photovoltaic devices were prepared through the addition of small amounts of metalloporphyin-terthiophenes to two established low bandgap polymer:fullerene blends. The methodology afforded a PCDTBT:PC<SUB>71</SUB>BM-based device that displayed an initial power conversion efficiency of 5.1%, an increase of 16% when compared to the binary blend. Among the range of metalloporphyrins considered in this study, the Cu(II)-porphyrin derivatives were found to result in the most significant efficiency improvements.
