        Evaluation of Safety and Antioxidant Activity of Yellow Tea (Camellia sinensis) Extract for Application in Food

        The article presents an evaluation of the safety of yellow tea (Camellia sinensis) extract consumption and its antioxidant activity in an animal model. Wistar rats were exposed through diet to 2, 6, and 10 g yellow tea extract/kg feed for 90 days. No signs of toxicity and no differences in mean body weight gain in the treated and control rats were recorded throughout the experiment. No statistically significant differences in hematology findings and clinical chemistry parameters were observed between controls and treated groups. Microscopic examination of tissue sections revealed no pathology attributable to yellow tea extract intake. Lipid peroxidation level in the liver was slightly increased in medium-dose males and high-dose females and decreased in two female groups receiving 2 and 6 g/kg of the extract tested. Content of carbonyl groups in protein, as well as the basal level of DNA damage, was not changed. In a majority of rats, the activity of antioxidant enzymes was increased except superoxide dismutase in high-dose groups, glutathione peroxidase in high-dose females, glutathione reductase in low- and mid-dose groups, and glutathione S-transferase in mid-dose females and high-dose males. It could be concluded that rats tolerated well dietary treatment with yellow tea extract up to 0.8 g/kg b.w./day for 90 days. Results showed that yellow tea extract at the doses tested did not demonstrate adverse effects and improved the antioxidant status in the liver of rats.

        ON SOME GENERALIZATIONS OF THE REVERSIBILITY IN NONUNITAL RINGS

        This paper is intended as a discussion of some generalizations of the notion of a reversible ring, which may be obtained by the restriction of the zero commutative property from the whole ring to some of its subsets. By the INCZ property we will mean the commutativity of idempotent elements of a ring with its nilpotent elements at zero, and by ICZ property we will mean the commutativity of idempotent elements of a ring at zero. We will prove that the INCZ property is equivalent to the abelianity even for nonunital rings. Thus the INCZ property implies the ICZ property. Under the assumption on the existence of unit, also the ICZ property implies the INCZ property. As we will see, in the case of nonunital rings, there are a few classes of rings separating the class of INCZ rings from the class of ICZ rings. We will prove that the classes of rings, that will be discussed in this note, are closed under extending to the rings of polynomials and formal power series.

        Application of Mechanochemical Processing for Preparation of Si3N4-based Powder Mixtures

        Mechanochemical processing (MCP) involves several high-energy collisons of powder particles with the milling media and results in the increased reactivity/sinterability of powder. The present paper shows results of mechanochemical processing (MCP) of silicon nitride powder mixture with the relevant sintering additives. The effects of MCP were studied by structural changes of powder particles themselves as well as by the resulting sintering/densification ability. It has been found that MCP significantly enhances reactivity and sinterability of the resultant material: silicon nitride ceramics could be pressureless sintered at 1500oC. Nevertheless, a degree of a silicon nitride crystal lattice and powder particle destruction (amorphization) as detected by XRD studies, is limited by the specific threshold. If that value is crossed then particle’s surface damage effects are prevailing thus severe evaporation overdominates mass transport at elevated temperature. It is discussed that the cross-solid interaction between particles of various chemical composition, triggered by many different factors during mechanochemical processing, including a short-range diffusion in silicon nitride particles after collisions with other types of particles plays more important role in enhanced reactivity of tested compositions than amorphization of the crystal lattice itself. Controlled deagglomeration of Si3N4 particles during the course of high-energy milling was also considered.

        Initial Evaluation of 99mTc(CO)3(ASMA) as a Renal Tracer in Healthy Human Volunteers

        Purpose Preclinical studies in rats showed that two of99mTc(CO)3(ASMA) isomers (rac- and L-ASMA) had pharmacokineticproperties equivalent to that of 131I-OIH, theradiopharmaceutical standard for the measurement of effectiverenal plasma flow. The aim of this study was to evaluatethe pharmacokinetics of 99mTc(CO)3(ASMA) isomers inhealthy human subjects. Methods Three ASMA ligands (rac-, L- and D-ASMA) werelabeled with 99mTc(CO)3 using an IsoLink kit (Covidien), andeach formed 99mTc(CO)3(ASMA) tracer was co-injected with131I-OIH into healthy human subjects followed by sequentialimaging, plasma clearance measurements and timed urinecollection. Plasma protein binding, red cell uptake and percentinjected dose in the urine were determined. Urine from eachgroup of volunteers was analyzed for metabolites by HPLC. Results Image quality was excellent with all three agents. Each 99mTc(CO)3(ASMA) preparation was excreted unchangedin the urine. The plasma clearance ratio(99mTc(CO)3(ASMA)/131I-OIH) was 81±3 % for D-ASMAcompared to only 20±4 % for L-ASMA and 37±7 % for rac-ASMA; the 81%clearance ratio for D-ASMA isomer is still∼30 % higher than the 99mTc-MAG3/131I-OIH clearance ratio(∼50-60 %). Red cell uptake was similar for all three tracers(6-9 %), and all tracers had a relatively rapid renal excretion;at 3 h, the 99mTc(CO)3(ASMA)/131I-OIH urine ratio was 100±3%for D-ASMA, 80±2%for L-ASMA and 88±1%for rac-ASMA. Conclusions The renal excretion characteristics of99mTc(CO)3(D-ASMA) in humans are superior to those ofthe other two 99mTc(CO)3(ASMA) isomers studied, but arestill inferior to 131I-OIH, even though there was no differencein the clearance of two of 99mTc(CO)3(ASMA) isomers and131I-OIH in rats. The work described here demonstrates thes e n s i t i v i t y i n i n vivo biologi c a l behavior of99mTc(CO)3(ASMA) isomers to their subtle structuraldifferences.

      • Patient value of primary care in Lean healthcare context

        Purpose - Enhancing patient value is acknowledged to be a central part of Lean healthcare. However, approaches to ascertain what patients regard as valuable are not yet established. The purpose of this study is to examine what constitute the value of the primary care from the patient□s perspective. Methodology/approach - This study employed customer value hierarchy to analyse what is the value from the patient point of view. Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was used in in order to identify the attributes and priorities of patient value. Pairwise comparisons of the attributes were obtained by the face-to-face survey carried out among patients in primary care units in Poland. Before main data collection, questionnaire construct was tested by the pilot study. The data was analysed according to the AHP procedure and appropriate statistical tests. Findings - Patients of primary care consider the comprehensiveness of care as the most valuable attribute of primary care. This is followed by the coordination and continuity of care, accessibility of care and interpersonal relationship with medical personnel. There are differences on how young and elderly assess value of primary care. For the young people the most important is to get quick response on healthcare needs. On the other hand, for the elderly people the most important is to have good interpersonal relationship with medical personnel. Practical implications - Results from this study are of significant benefit to all healthcare managers which consider applying Lean as a medical service improvement concept and designing healthcare delivery in the way, which allows enhancing patient value. Originality/value - There are many studies presenting application of Lean in healthcare, but none of them answers the question what constitute patient value and which value attributes are the most important, which this paper provides. This paper makes also contribution by presenting how AHP can be successfully applied in customer value research.

        Influence of a hybrid digital toolset on the creative behaviors of designers in early-stage design

        The purpose of this research was to investigate how diversification of the repertoire of digital design tech-niques affects the creative behaviors of designers in the early design phases. The principal results of practice-based pilot experiments on the subject indicate three key properties of the hybrid digital tooling strategy. The strategy features intelligent human-machine integration, facilitating three different types of synergies between the designer and the digital media: human-dominated, machine-dominated, and a balanced human-machine collaboration. This strategy also boosts the cognitive behaviors of the designer by triggering divergent, transformative and convergent design activities and allowing for work on various abstraction levels. In addition, the strategy stimulates the explorative behaviors of the designer by encouraging the production of and interaction with a wide range of design representations, including physical and digital, dynamic and static objects. Thus, working with a broader range of digital modeling techniques can positively influence the creativity of designers in the early conception stages.

        Analysis of Acoustic Emission Signals at Austempering of Steels Using Neural Networks

        Bearing steel 100CrMnSi6-4 and tool steel C105U were used to carry out this research with the steels beingaustempered to obtain a martensitic-bainitic structure. During the process quite a large number of acoustic emissions(AE) were observed. These signals were then analysed using neural networks resulting in the identification ofthree groups of events of: high, medium and low energy and in addition their spectral characteristics wereplotted. The results were presented in the form of diagrams of AE incidence as a function of time. It wasdemonstrated that complex transformations of austenite into martensite and bainite occurred when austemperingbearing steel at 160 °C and tool steel at 130 °C respectively. The selected temperatures of isothermalquenching of the tested steels were within the area near to MS temperature, which affected the complex course ofphase transition. The high activity of AE is a typical occurrence for martensitic transformation and this isthe transformation mechanism that induces the generation of AE signals of higher energy in the first stage oftransition. In the second stage of transformation, the initially nucleated martensite accelerates the occurrenceof the next bainitic transformation.
