      • Brands and Competing Factors in Purchasing Hand Phones in the Malaysian Market

Mahfuzur Rahman,Yusof Ismail,Mohamed Albaity,Che Ruhana Isa 한국유통과학회 2017 한국유통과학회 학술대회 논문집 Vol.2017 No.-

Hand phones are standard paraphernalia among university students. Factors that motivate them to own the gadget would be of interest to both the students as well as marketers. Hand phone usage is an unexamined field in academic literature, this exploratory study attempts to investigate student purchasing motives in cellular phone markets. It also intends to know the student’s satisfaction with the different services and its future impact on socio economic changes. In this study, undergraduates (n=336) were requested to specify their purchase criteria of hand phone. The instrument used in the study to collect feedback from the respondents contains a combination of open-ended and scaled questions, and some background demographics. The study employed content analysis, Pearson’s correlation, and t-tests as the primary tools to analyze the responses. Results show that brand was rated as the most important factor in student purchase decisions. Other factors, arranged in decreasing order of importance comprise price, product quality, features, durability, availability, promotion, and post purchase service. Brand and price correlated significantly. It is also observed that there is very little difference regarding preference between brand and price in purchasing a hand phone. Marketers may formulate suitable strategies out of the findings to promote hand phones to university undergraduates in Malaysia by emphasizing at brands and price.

      • Is Malaysia Ready to go Cashless?

Mahfuzur RAHMAN,Izlin ISMAIL,Shamshul BAHRI 한국유통과학회 2018 KODISA ICBE (International Conference on Business Vol.2018 No.-

Malaysia’s migration towards a cashless society is the main thrust toward embracing the digital economy. The study aims to determine the factors influencing the adoption of cashless payments by consumers and businesses, and investigate issues that moderate these factors. This study surveyed consumers and businesses based in the Klang Valley in Malaysia to understand the factors (pull and push factors) that motivate their adoption of the various cashless payment methods. The study identifies challenges and risk factors in providing reliable and efficient cashless payment services. The survey findings show that consumers’ willingness to adopt cashless payments is significantly related to their performance expectancy, facilitating condition and perceived technology security. Moreover, business willingness to go cashless is positively influenced by compatibility, top management support, technology competence, competitive pressure and critical mass. The findings of this study aim to assist policymakers to address existing concerns of consumers and businesses to enhance the growth of cashless payments in Malaysia.

Restoration of degraded forest ecosystem through non-forestry livelihood supports: experience from the Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary in Bangladesh

Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman,Md. Abdullah Al Mahmud,Farid Uddin Ahmed 한국산림과학회 2017 Forest Science And Technology Vol.13 No.3

Lack ofnon-forestry incomesources for the forest-dependent community was oneof the major causes of continued biodiversity loss in Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary (CWS). A livelihood support program was implemented from July 2012 through June 2015 to reduce people’s forest-dependence for their livelihoods. We evaluated the efficacy of this program in enhancing the biodiversity health of CWS. An Ordinary Least Square regression framework was used to estimate the difference in difference of the income between the control and the treatment households. Alongside, the biodiversity attributes of the CWS were measured in 2012 and 2015 and were compared. The intervention increased a treatment household’s monthly non-forestry income by BDT11,781 and decreased its monthly forest income by BDT2128. In contrast, with increased natural regeneration of 8.43%, 12 out of the 16 major species at CWS showed increased importance value index (IVI). The IVI increased by 48.03% for Acacia auriculiformis and decreased by 56.30% and 31.76% for Dipterocarpus turbinatus and Tectona grandis, respectively. As confirmed by the households, this biodiversity improvement could be attributed to the livelihood intervention program at CWS. Continued monitoring is important to sustain the successes of the program.

Presence of benthic dinoflagellates around coastal waters of Jeju Island including newly recorded species

Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Shah,이준백,안소정 한국생태학회 2013 Journal of Ecology and Environment Vol.36 No.4

A study on the presence of benthic dinoflagellates in the intertidal zone along the coasts of Jeju Island, Korea was conducted during 2011 and 2012. Identification and taxonomic observations were made of the benthic dinoflagellate samples using light and epifluorescence microscopy. Thirty-seven dinoflagellate taxa belong to five orders, nine families, 18genera and 30 species, which are new records for Korean waters, were detected in this study. The detailed nomenclature, references, distribution, and illustrations are presented here. The commonly occurring genera were Amphidinium, Coolia,Ostreopsis, Prorocentrum, and Thecadinium. Among the recorded species, 26 were found only in sand sediment, seven in macroalgal samples, and four were found in both sand and macroalgal samples. Of the 37 species, nine were potentially toxic. These results suggest that diversified benthic dinoflagellates including several potentially toxic species occur in sand sediment and macroalgae in the intertidal zone along the coasts of Jeju Island. The morphological features of the identified species were more or less similar to observations made by previous studies in Korea and elsewhere. The presence of known toxic species may indicate a potential risk of toxicity in the marine ecosystem of Jeju Island. The present study can be helpful for further detailed taxonomic, toxicological, molecular phylogenetic studies and may help in the management and conservation of Jeju Island’s marine ecosystem.

New records of genus Tripos (Dinophyceae) around Jeju Island, Korea

이준백,안소정,정한식,Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Shah 한국생태학회 2014 Journal of Ecology and Environment Vol.37 No.4

The morphology of 26 species of the genus Tripos was studied among a total of 51 species of this genus, which were takenusing 20 μm net samples from June 2006 to January 2011 at 14 stations around Jeju Island. Of these, 23 species were firstdescribed as new records in Korean waters and 3 species were redescribed. Short descriptions and synonyms are givenfor each species in the present study. The dinoflagellates of family Ceratiaceae include marine and freshwater species, belonged to originally the genus Ceratium. Recently, this genus were divided into a new combination with the genus Tripos, which contains the marine species, and the original genus Ceratium, including the freshwater species. We used theTripos genus for the marine species in this study as a valid name.

Do Board Traits Influence Firms' Dividend Payout Policy? Evidence from Malaysia

TAHIR, Hussain,RAHMAN, Mahfuzur,MASRI, Ridzuan Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.3

The study aims to investigate factors that determine dividend payout policy using 336 non-financial firm year observations covering the period 2005 to 2016 in Malaysia. We found a significant positive relationship between corporate board size, board members average age, board tenure and dividend payout policy. We also found a strong negative effect and statistically insignificant relationship of board diversity, board independence, CEO duality and dividend payout policy. Additional, financial leverage has a negative effect on dividend payout policy. It is also noticed that firms with diverse boards are more likely to pay dividends and tend to pay larger dividends than those with non-diverse boards. Our results suggest that board diversity has a significant impact on dividend payout policy. Impact of board diversity on dividend payout policy is particularly conspicuous for firms with potentially greater agency problems. Our findings are consistent with the argument that corporate board traits enhancement positively affect the dividend payout policy which is beneficial for shareholders. This study offers useful insights into the current global debate on board traits and its implications for firms. The dividend payout policy signals good news to investors. Corporate board traits and firm's financial decision are the factors that disrupt the dividend decision.
