A measurement of the top quark mass (M-t) in the dileptonic t (t) over bar decay channel is performed using data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data was recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 +/- 0.5 fb(-1). Events are selected with two oppositely charged leptons (l = e, mu) and two jets identified as originating from b quarks. The analysis is based on three kinematic observables whose distributions are sensitive to the value of Mt. An invariant mass observable, M-bl, and a 'stransverse mass' observable, M-T2, are employed in a simultaneous fit to determine the value of M-t and an overall jet energy scale factor (JSF). A complementary approach is used to construct an invariant mass observable, M-blv, that is combined with M-T2 to measure M-t. The shapes of the observables, along with their evolutions in M-t and JSF, are modeled by a nonparametric Gaussian process regression technique. The sensitivity of the observables to the value of M-t is investigated using a Fisher information density method. The top quark mass is measured to be 172.22 +/- 0.18(stat)(-0.93)(+0.89) (syst) GeV.

We report the extremely high-magnification (A > 1000) binary microlensing event OGLE-2007-BLG-514. We obtained good coverage around the double peak structure in the light curve via follow-up observations from different observatories. The binary lens model that includes the effects of parallax (known orbital motion of the Earth) and orbital motion of the lens yields a binary lens mass ratio of q = 0.321 +/- 0.007 and a projected separation of s = 0.072 +/- 0.001 in units of the Einstein radius. The parallax parameters allow us to determine the lens distance D-L = 3.11 +/- 0.39 kpc and total mass M-L = 1.40 +/- 0.18 M-circle dot; this leads to the primary and secondary components having masses of M-1 = 1.06 +/- 0.13 M-circle dot and M-2 = 0.34 +/- 0.04 M-circle dot, respectively. The parallax model indicates that the binary lens system is likely constructed by the main-sequence stars. On the other hand, we used a Bayesian analysis to estimate probability distributions by the model that includes the effects of xallarap (possible orbital motion of the source around a companion) and parallax (q = 0.270 +/- 0.005, s = 0.083 +/- 0.001). The primary component of the binary lens is relatively massive, with M-1 = 0.9(-0.3)(+4.6) M-circle dot and it is at a distance of D-L = 2.6(-0.9)(+3.8) kpc. Given the secure mass ratio measurement, the companion mass is therefore M-2 = 0.2(-0.1)(+1.2) M-circle dot. The xallarap model implies that the primary lens is likely a stellar remnant, such as a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

A search is presented for massive spin-1 Z' resonances decaying to a top quark and a heavy vector-like top quark partner T. The search is based on a 2.6 fb(-1) sample of proton-proton collisions at 13TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The analysis is optimized for final states in which the T quark decays to a W boson and a bottom quark. The focus is on all-jet final states in which both the W boson and the top quark decay into quarks that evolve into jets. The decay products of the top quark and of the W boson are assumed to be highly Lorentz-boosted and cannot be reconstructed as separate jets, but are instead reconstructed as merged, wide jets. Techniques for the identification of jet substructure and jet flavour are used to distinguish signal from background events. Several models for Z' bosons decaying to T quarks are excluded at 95% confidence level, with upper limits on the cross section ranging from 0.13 to 10 pb, depending on the chosen hypotheses. This is the first search for a neutral spin-1 heavy resonance decaying to a top quark and a vector-like T quark in the all-hadronic final state.

A search for a very light Higgs boson decaying into a pair of tau leptons is presented within the framework of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model. This search is based on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The signal is defined by the production of either of the two lightest scalars, h(1) or h(2), via gluon-gluon fusion and subsequent decay into a pair of the lightest Higgs bosons, a(1) or h(1). The h(1) or h(2) boson is identified with the observed state at a mass of 125 GeV. The analysis searches for decays of the a(1) (h(1)) states into pairs of tau leptons and covers a mass range for the a(1) (h(1)) boson of 4 to 8 GeV. The search reveals no significant excess in data above standard model background expectations, and an upper limit is set on the signal production cross section times branching fraction as a function of the a(1) (h(1)) boson mass. The 95% confidence level limit ranges from 4.5 pb at m(a1) (m(h1)) = 8 GeV to 10.3 pb at m(a1) (m(h1)) = 5 GeV.

Background/Aims: The T-helper 1 (TH1) immune reaction is essential for the eradication of hepatitis C virus (HCV) during pegylated interferon α (PEG-IFN-α)- and ribavirin (RBV)-based therapy in chronic HCV patients. Secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1) was shown to be a crucial cytokine for the initiation of a TH1 immune response. We aimed to investigate whether SPP1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) may influence sustained virological response (SVR) rates. Methods: Two SNPs in the promoter region of SPP1 at the .443 C>T and .1748 G>A loci were genotyped in 100 patients with chronic HCV genotype 4 infection using a TaqMan SNP genotyping assay. Results: Sixty-seven patients achieved a SVR, and 33 patients showed no SVR. Patients carrying the T/T genotype at the .443 locus showed a significantly higher SVR rate than those carrying the C/T or C/C genotype (83.67% vs 50.98%, p<0.001). At the .1748 locus, the SVR rate was significantly higher in patients with the G/G genotype than in those with the A/A genotype (88.89% vs 52.63%, p=0.028) and in patients with the G/A genotype than in those with the A/A genotype (85.29% vs 52.63%, p=0.001). Conclusions: SPP1 SNPs at .443 C>T and .1748 G>A loci may be useful markers for predicting the response to PEG-IFN-α-2b plus RBV therapy in Egyptian patients with chronic HCV genotype 4 infection. MOA-2010-BLG-073L: AN M-DWARF WITH A SUBSTELLAR COMPANION AT THE PLANET/BROWN DWARF BOUNDARY

We present an analysis of the anomalous microlensing event, MOA-2010-BLG-073, announced by the Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics survey on 2010 March 18. This event was remarkable because the source was previously known to be photometrically variable. Analyzing the pre-event source light curve, we demonstrate that it is an irregular variable over timescales >200 days. Its dereddened color, (V - I)(S),(0), is 1.221 +/- 0.051 mag, and from our lens model we derive a source radius of 14.7 +/- 1.3 R-circle dot, suggesting that it is a red giant star. We initially explored a number of purely microlensing models for the event but found a residual gradient in the data taken prior to and after the event. This is likely to be due to the variability of the source rather than part of the lensing event, so we incorporated a slope parameter in our model in order to derive the true parameters of the lensing system. We find that the lensing system has a mass ratio of q = 0.0654 +/- 0.0006. The Einstein crossing time of the event, t(E) = 44.3 +/- 0.1 days, was sufficiently long that the light curve exhibited parallax effects. In addition, the source trajectory relative to the large caustic structure allowed the orbital motion of the lens system to be detected. Combining the parallax with the Einstein radius, we were able to derive the distance to the lens, D-L = 2.8 +/- 0.4 kpc, and the masses of the lensing objects. The primary of the lens is an M-dwarf with M-L,M-1 = 0.16 +/- 0.03 M-circle dot, while the companion has M-L,M-2 = 11.0 +/- 2.0 M-J, putting it in the boundary zone between planets and brown dwarfs.

Measurements are presented of the t-channel single-top-quark production cross section in proton-proton collisions at root s = 8 TeV. The results are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb(-1) recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. The cross section is measured inclusively, as well as separately for top (t) and antitop (t) over bar, in final states with a muon or an electron. The measured inclusive t-channel cross section is sigma(t-ch.) = 83.6 +/- 2.3 (stat.) +/- 7.4 (syst.) pb. The single t and (t) cross sections are measured to be sigma(t-ch.)(t) = 53.8 +/- 1.5 (stat.) +/- 4.4 (syst.) pb and sigma(t-ch.)(t) over bar = 27.6 +/- 1.3 (stat.) +/- 3.7 (syst.) pb, respectively. The measured ratio of cross sections is Rt-ch. = sigma(t-ch.)(t)/sigma(t-ch.)(t) over bar = 1.95 +/- 0.10 (stat.) +/- 0.19 (syst.), in agreement with the standard model prediction. The modulus of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V-tb is extracted and, in combination with a previous CMS result at root s = 7 TeV, a value vertical bar V-tb vertical bar = 0.998 +/- 0.038 (exp.) +/- 0.016 (theo.) is obtained.

A search for new phenomena is performed using events with jets and significant transverse momentum imbalance, as inferred through the M-T2 variable. The results are based on a sample of proton-proton collisions collected in 2016 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). No excess event yield is observed above the predicted standard model background, and the results are interpreted as exclusion limits at 95% confidence level on the masses of predicted particles in a variety of simplified models of R-parity conserving supersymmetry. Depending on the details of the model, 95% confidence level lower limits on the gluino (light-flavor squark) masses are placed up to 2025 (1550) GeV. Mass limits as high as 1070 (1175) GeV are set on the masses of top (bottom) squarks. Information is provided to enable re-interpretation of these results, including model-independent limits on the number of non-standard model events for a set of simplified, inclusive search regions.

A SUB-SATURN MASS PLANET, MOA-2009-BLG-319Lb

We report the gravitational microlensing discovery of a sub-Saturn mass planet, MOA-2009-BLG-319Lb, orbiting a K-or M-dwarf star in the inner Galactic disk or Galactic bulge. The high-cadence observations of the MOA-II survey discovered this microlensing event and enabled its identification as a high-magnification event approximately 24 hr prior to peak magnification. As a result, the planetary signal at the peak of this light curve was observed by 20 different telescopes, which is the largest number of telescopes to contribute to a planetary discovery to date. The microlensing model for this event indicates a planet-star mass ratio of q = (3.95 +/- 0.02) x 10(-4) and a separation of d = 0.97537 +/- 0.00007 in units of the Einstein radius. A Bayesian analysis based on the measured Einstein radius crossing time, t(E), and angular Einstein radius, theta(E), along with a standard Galactic model indicates a host star mass of M-L = 0.38(-0.18)(+0.34) M-circle dot and a planet mass of M-p = 50(-24)(+44)M(circle plus), which is half the mass of Saturn. This analysis also yields a planet-star three-dimensional separation of a = 2.4(-0.6)(+1.2) AU and a distance to the planetary system of D-L = 6.1(-1.2)(+1.1) kpc. This separation is similar to 2 times the distance of the snow line, a separation similar to most of the other planets discovered by microlensing.

Effect of Partial Magnetic Order on Resistivity and Thermopower of Ho(Co1−xAlx)2 Alloys

The electrical resistivity and the thermopower S of Ho(Co1−xAlx)2 alloys (x = 0 to 0.2) weremeasured at temperatures from 2 K to 300 K in magnetic fields up to 10 T. While (T) and S(T)of pure HoCo2 reveal abrupt changes at the magnetic ordering temperature TC, indicating a firstordertransition, the temperature variations of both properties across the ordering temperature inHo(Co1−xAlx)2 alloys clearly show that the type of magnetic transition changes under substitutionof Al for Co from first order to second order around x 0.06. (T) of the Al-substituted samples (x= 0.15 and 0.2) has a very unusual variation at temperatures below TC: in contrast to the expectedand usually-observed decrease of (T), the resistivity of Ho(Co1−xAlx)2 alloys (x = 0.15 and 0.2)increases at temperatures below TC. Moreover, the magnetoresistance of these alloys is positivearound TC; this is also in a sharp contrast to the usually observed negative magnetoresistance. We show that the anomalous resistivity and magnetoresistance in these alloys are related to themetamagnetic instability of the Co 3d subsystem and to the fluctuating local magnetic susceptibilitydue to atomic substitution. Due to this fluctuating local magnetic susceptibility, the uniformexchange field of 4f moments induces a non-uniform polarization of the 3d system, with staticspatial fluctuations of the local magnetization. This static magnetic disorder gives an additionalcontribution (m) to the electrical resistance in the alloys at temperatures below TC. The degreeof this disorder changes with decreasing temperature, resulting in specific variation of m withtemperature.
