        SEX RATIOS OF NATURAL POPULATION OF IXODID TICKS IN PASTURE GROWN IN BANGLADESH

        The study on the sex ratios of natural population of Ixodid ticks in pasture was conducted in the Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus, Mymensingh, from 1988 to June 1990. The samples were collected from the five grazing fields consisting of five different vegetations. Dragging methods were used for the collection of samples. In 24 months of observations a total of 1113 ticks of two different species, Boophilus microplus (670), Haemaphysalis bispinosa (443) were collected and their sex ratio was determined. Females were recorded higher in both B. microplus and H. bispinosa.

        EFFECTS OF INTERCROPPING, SEEDLING RATE AND FERTILIZER ON FODDER PRODUCTION IN THE LOW LYING AREA OF BANGLADESH

        The study was conducted at low lying areas in Pabna Sirajgong districts of Bangladesh. To observe the potentiality of bio-mass production two trials were conducted. In first trial maize intercropped with Khesari taking 15 experimental plots of each size $5m{\times}5m$ were arranged in 5 blocks having homogenous soil characteristics. The study showed that the bio-mass yield of sole maize and sole Khesari were 35.25 t/ha. and 56.80 t/ha. respectively and there was a significant difference (p < 0.01) among them. The results also showed that bio-mass yield of maize and Kherasi was higher ($70.04{\pm}6.25t/ha$, $98.88{\pm}10.77t/ha$ and $80.56{\pm}9.5t/ha$) compared to sole maize and sole Khesari and land equivalent ratio was also lower. For second trial, one hectare of land was divided into 16 experimental plots with 4 replications in each plot. Four levels of urea (0 kg/ha, 30 kg/ha, 45 kg/ha, and 60 kg/ha.) were applied to experimental plot. The seed rates were 98.8 kg/ha (farmer's practice), 86.45 kg/ha, 74.1 kg/ha and 61.75 kg/ha. average bio-mass yield of matikalai at different seed rates along with urea fertilizer ranged from 38.49 t/ha, to 65.35 t/ha. the highest seed rate along with highest fertilizer also correspond to the peak production (65.35 t/ha) and the lowest seed rate (61.75 kg/ha) along with the lowest fertilizer rate (30 kg/ha.) showed lowest production (38.49 t/ha.). Here, it was found that the bio-mass yield of matikalai increased with the incremental amount of seed, indicating significant effect (p < 0.05) of seed rates on the bio-mass yield of matikalai. On the other hand, fertilizer doses in different treatment combinations had significant effect (p < 0.05) on bio-mass yield. Two levels of seed rates at zero level of fertilizer were recommended : 86.45 kg/ha for the resource rich farmers and 61.75 kg/ha for the resource poor farmers.

        Physical Feature, Physiological Character and Behavior Study of Gayal(Bos frontalis)

        The physical feature, physiological character and behavior studies were conducted with fifteen newly collected gayals in Bandarban hill tract area of Bangladesh. Their morphology is different from domestic cattle. The range of pulse rate, body temperature and respiration rate were 47 to 75 per minute, 37.78 to $38.88^{\circ}C$ and 20 to 40 per minute, respectively. These physiological values vary with different age group and seasonal variation. In hematological feature, the average findings were RBC $7.01{\pm}0.52$ million/cu.mm, WBC $14.3{\pm}3.69$ thousand/cu.mm, hemoglobin concentration $9.81{\pm}2.25gm%$, PCV $35.86{\pm}3.68%$. In differential WBC count neutrophils $28.23{\pm}1.75%$, lymphocytes $62{\pm}2.05%$, monocytes $4.4{\pm}1.34%$, eosinophils $5{\pm}2.49%$ and basophils $0.4{\pm}0.51%$. In behavior study, the animal shows browsing nature on hill slopes. They are watchful in new environment, become excited and nervous with strangers. Heated female gayals response for mating with domestic bull.

        Reproductive Potentials of Gayal (Bos frontalis) under Semi-intensive Management

        The assessment of reproductive potentials of female gayal under semi-intensive management was conducted with 18 animals in Bandarban hilly area of Bangladesh. Age at first estrous (days), age at first conception (days), length of estrous cycle (days), number of service per conception (natural), gestation period (days), age at first calving (days), and calving interval (natural service) (days) of gayal were $598.2{\pm}168.44$, $723{\pm}169.94$, $21.86{\pm}2.93$, 1.41, $296.05{\pm}3.87$, $1014.42{\pm}260.32$ and $465{\pm}80.48$ respectively. Daily milk yield and lactation length of gayal were $304.98{\pm}30.46ml/day$ and $116.67{\pm}8.08days$. Gayal male calves had higher birth weight (19.67 kg) than female calves (15.58 kg) in first lactation. Birth weight increases in second and third lactation than first lactation in both male and female calves. Highest conception rate observed in winter season and 70.60% successful conception occur when service was given within 21-30 h of estrous. Maximum number of female gayal use to come in estrous in winter and calved in monsoon and autumn. Cervicitis and irregular heat were the most reproductive problems followed by metritis, case of abortion, anestrous and repeat breeding. From this study it was observed that the reproductive performance of gayal is very close with the domestic cattle. It may use as beef cattle for the hilly regions of Bangladesh.

      • Comparison of Arsenic(3) Removal by steel manufacturing byproducts and Zerovalent Iron for a Permeable Reactive Barrier Material in Groundwater

        Zero-valent iron (ZVI) and a byproduct of steel industry, oxygen gas sludge (OGS), were tested for the removal of As(Ⅲ), which is a highly toxic, mobile and predominant arsenic species in anoxic groundwater. Batch experiments were performed to determine the feasibility of ZVI and OGS as an adsorbent for As(Ⅲ) treatment in groundwater at wide range of pH 3-12. Kinetic studies have been described with the mechanism of adsorption. The effects of competing anions showed HCO₃(-), H₄SiO₄(0), and H₂PO₄<sup>2-</sup> are potential interferences in the As(Ⅲ) adsorption reaction. Our results suggest that OGS and ZVI is a suitable candidate for in-situ groundwater treatment as a permeable reactive barrier material.
