The available methods for veneer evaluation are limited to clinical and radiographic examinations, which may not allow the appropriate identification of failure. In this report, we demonstrate the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a noninvasive diagnostic and follow-up method to evaluate gingival recovery and the adhesive interface in aesthetic oral rehabilitation involving periodontal plastic surgery and ceramic laminate veneers. OCT was efficient for evaluating both soft and hard tissues, as well as the quality of the adhesive interface. In conclusion, OCT was found to be a promising approach for the professional evaluation of aesthetic oral rehabilitation, as it was capable of generating images that enabled the analysis of gingival recovery and the adhesive interface.

Lyngbya C. Agardh ex Gomont is a nonheterocytous cyanobacterial genus whose evolutionary history is still poorly known. The traditionally defined Lyngbya has been demonstrated to be polyphyletic, including at least five distinct clades, some of which have been proposed as new genera. Intraspecific diversity is also clearly underestimated in Lyngbya due to the lack of unique morphological characters to differentiate species. In this study, we describe the new genus Capillus T. A. Caires, C. L. Sant'Anna et J. M. C. Nunes from benthic marine environments, including two new Brazilian species (here described as C. salinus T. A. Caires, C. L. Sant'Anna et J. M. C. Nunes, and C. tropicalis T. A. Caires, C. L. Sant'Anna et J. M. C. Nunes), and two species yet to be described, one of them from India (Capillus sp. 2.1), and the other from United States of America, based on strain PCC 7419. Capillus species presented cross-wise diagonal fragmentation, assisted or not by necridic cells, which has not been previously mentioned for Lyngbya. Ultrastructural analyses showed that C. salinus and C. tropicalis have numerous gas vesicles, which are rarely described for benthic marine species. The new genus formed a well-supported clade, and the D1-D1' and Box B secondary structures of internal transcribed spacer also supported the proposal of its new species. These findings help to clarify the diversity of species in the Lyngbya complex and the taxonomy of the group, and highlight the need of further floristic surveys in tropical coastal environments, which remain poorly studied.

Background: The modified Ferriman-Gallwey (mFG) score is the gold standard for the clinical evaluation of hirsutism. However, racial variations in terminal hair growth limit this tool. This study aimed to determine the mFG cut-off score among Filipino womenand its association with biochemical hyperandrogenism. Methods: A total of 128 Filipino women were included in this prospective cross-sectional study and were divided into two groups: apolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) group (n=28) and a non-PCOS group (n=100). The participants underwent mFG score determination, ovarian ultrasound conducted by a single sonographer, and hormone testing. The mFG cut-off score was determined basedon the 95th percentile of the non-PCOS group. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between mFG score and biochemical hyperandrogenism. Results: Although the mFG score was generally low in both the PCOS and non-PCOS groups, the former exhibited a higher meanscore than the latter (4.3±3.0 vs. 2.0±2.2, P<0.001). Normal values for the total mFG score ranged from 0 to 7. Using a cut-offscore of 7, a higher proportion of hirsute women (mFG score ≥7) was observed in the PCOS group versus the non-PCOS group(17.9% vs. 5.0%, P=0.025). Elevated calculated free testosterone (FT) was also found to be significantly associated with hirsutism(odds ratio, 6.2; 95% confidence interval, 1.2 to 32.4 pmol/L; P=0.030). Conclusion: A score of 7 and above constitutes hirsutism in this population of Filipino women. Hirsute women are more likely thannon-hirsute women to have elevated calculated FT.

The antinociceptive activity of icariside E4, adihydrobenzofuran-type lignan isolated from Tabebuiaroseo-alba (Ridley) Sandwith (Bignoniaceae) bark, wasevaluated in mice by using chemical and thermal models ofnociception. Intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of crude T. roseo-alba bark extract and its methanol fraction inhibitedacetic acid-induced abdominal constriction in mice. Furthermore,i.p. administration of 0.1, 1, and 10 mg/kg oficariside E4 reduced the number of writhes evoked by aceticacid injection by 46.9, 82.3, and 66.6 %, respectively. Icariside E4 administration had no effect in the first phase ofthe formalin test, but it reduced nociceptive behavior in thesecond phase as indicated by a reduction in the licking time. Icariside E4 did not modify thermal nociception in the hotplatetest model, suggesting that it had a peripheral antinociceptiveaction. The antinociceptive effect of icariside E4 inthe writhing test was reversed by pre-administration ofglibenclamide, but not of naloxone, atropine, yohimbine, orhaloperidol. Together, these results indicated that theantinociceptive activity of icariside E4 from T. roseo-alba inmodels of chemical pain occurred through ATP-sensitiveK? channel-dependent mechanisms.

To identify common alleles associated with different histotypes of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), we pooled data from multiple genome-wide genotyping projects totaling 25,509 EOC cases and 40,941 controls. We identified nine new susceptibility loci for different EOC histotypes: six for serous EOC histotypes (3q28, 4q32.3, 8q21.11, 10q24.33, 18q11.2 and 22q12.1), two for mucinous EOC (3q22.3 and 9q31.1) and one for endometrioid EOC (5q12.3). We then performed meta-analysis on the results for high-grade serous ovarian cancer with the results from analysis of 31,448 BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers, including 3,887 mutation carriers with EOC. This identified three additional susceptibility loci at 2q13, 8q24.1 and 12q24.31. Integrated analyses of genes and regulatory biofeatures at each locus predicted candidate susceptibility genes, including OBFC1, a new candidate susceptibility gene for low-grade and borderline serous EOC.

The preserved Cerrado from Northeastern Brazil presentsdifferent physicochemical properties and plant diversity, which can influence the fungal communities. Therefore, weevaluated the fungal diversity in preserved sites, at Sete CidadesNational Park, across a gradient of vegetation that includedCampo graminoide, Cerrado stricto sensu, Cerradao, and Floresta decidual. Of all of the operational taxonomicunits (OTUs) obtained, the Floresta decidual presented thehighest richness. Ascomycota were the most abundant phylum(45%), followed by Basidiomycota (32%). Basal fungiand other phyla accounted for 23% of the total dataset. Agaricomycetes, Eurotiomycetes, Lecanoromycetes, Basidiobolus,Dothideomycetes, and Taphrinomycetes were themost abundant classes of fungi found across the gradient ofCerrado vegetation. In conclusion, our study suggests thatthe Brazilian Cerrado from Sete Cidades National Park presentsa high fungal diversity and includes sources of newfungal species for biotechnological purposes.
