Superior Donuts: Digestive Resistance To Gentrification
Lukasz Muniowski 부산대학교 한국민족문화연구소 2017 Localities Vol.7 No.-
In this article I analyze how the 2017 comedy series Superior Donuts handles a rather serious topic of gentrification. The show is based on real-life processes taking place in Uptown Chicago. An elderly Polish immigrant Arthur Przybyszewski and a young African-American Franco Wicks try to keep Arthur’s donut store from closing, while also resisting gentrification. Despite its obvious flaws – after all it is a feel-good sitcom, in which problems need to be created, taken on and solved during the span of one 20-minute long episode – the series successfully presents the economical, social and cultural impact of this process, which is shaping modern cities around the world. Through this analysis I present how the show’s creators and writers are able to successfully suggest ways of resistance, while simultaneously keeping Superior Donuts entertaining for the casual viewer. The most obvious conclusion that one might draw from watching the thirteen episodes that constitute the first season of Superior Donuts is that gentrification is inevitable, so the only way to resist it is to change. Still, the change has to be made on one’s own terms, otherwise one risks being absorbed by the neoliberal economy. The most effective way to do so is to remain loyal to one’s local community. No matter how diverse, the community allows for its members to form bonds that are beneficial to everyone. It is this sense of community that in a way enforces dialogue between the rich and the poor. Otherwise scared of each other, once they learn that an actual dialogue is possible, they will at least try to understand one another, rather than immediately classify those poorer/richer as their opponents.

The situation in Southeast Asia brings attention not only to the regional countries, but also to the great powers. The growing People’s Republic of China’s economy and military especially causes concern regarding the stability of the whole Southeast Asia region. Smaller Southeast Asian countries may be overwhelmed by China. Amongst these countries is Malaysia, which tries to secure its national interest in the region, especially in the South China Sea. Malaysia faces some maritime security threats caused by its stakes in the Spratly Islands dispute. The article attempts to elucidate the contemporary condition of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), especially in the field of warships. Moreover, the study tries to answer the question of why the RMN is an important branch of the Malaysian Armed Forces and plays a vital role in securing Malaysian safety. The article is divided into two parts. The first describes the problems which Malaysia faces in the field of maritime security. The second elaborates the assets of the RMN, mostly in major combatant ships. This paper concludes with a summary of the RMN’s major vessels that have been and will be developed from 1990 to 2025.

The inverse Galois problem concerns whether or not every finite group appears as the Galois group of some Galois extension of the rational numbers. This problem, first posed in the early 19th century, is unsolved. In other words, we consider a pair - the group G and the field K. The question is whether there is an extension field L of K such that G is the Galois group of L. In this paper we present the proof that any group G is a Galois group of any field extension. In other words, we only consider the group G. And we present the solution to the inverse Galois problem.
Poland and the Proliferation Security Initiative
( Lukasz Kulesa ) 한국국방연구원 2010 The Korean Journal of Defense Analysis Vol.22 No.1
Poland is an active supporter of the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), a multinational cooperation effort to interdict weapons of mass destruction (WMD) related materials, launched by President George W. Bush in Krako´w on May 31, 2003. The article describes the Polish engagement in the development of the Initiative, broadening the number of participating countries, conducting exercises and organizing PSI meetings. The issues of the effectiveness of the cooperation and the prospects for the future are also discussed. In the case of Poland, its engagement in the PSI has had a positive impact on the country`s international and regional image and position. Poland has been able to establish itself as one of the leaders of the Initiative. Domestically, the PSI participation has helped to strengthen the coordination between the different state institutions and agencies dealing with nonproliferation.

Background: Hemostasis plays a crucial role during every surgery allowing for a bloodless operating field. Fast and effective surgery leads to a reduced risk of postoperative complications. One of the latest methods for achieving homeostasis is using natural polysaccharide-based hemostatic powders. The study aimed to evaluate the biocompatibility according to the ISO 10993 standards of 4SEAL® Hemostatic powder. Methods: Chemical characterization (Headspace GC-MS, GC-MS, and ICP-MS), cytotoxicity, genotoxicity (MLA and AMES), endotoxin contamination, sensitization potential, intracutaneous reactivity, acute and subacute systemic toxicity with implantation, and pyrogenicity were evaluated to investigate the biocompatibility of the 4SEAL® Hemostatic powder. Studies were conducted according to ISO 10993 standards. Results: The biocompatibility requirements according to ISO 10993-1 for 4SEAL® Hemostatic powder were met. Based on the conducted in-vitro studies, 4SEAL® Hemostatic powder shows a non-cytotoxicity and non-mutagenic potential. Also, the results of in vivo studies of 4SEAL® Hemostatic powder shows no signs of toxicity, nonsensitizing, non-irritating, and no pyrogenicity potential. In the chemical characterization of 4Seal® Hemostatic Powder, no compounds were identified above Analytical Evaluation Threshold (AET) and no elements with concentrations higher than element-specific PDE [μg/day] were detected. Conclusions: 4SEAL® Hemostatic powder is a promising new hemostatic agent with a wide range of potential applications and excellent biocompatibility.

Przybylowicz, Lukasz,Park, Kyu-Tek Korean Society of Applied Entomology 2001 INSECTA KOREANA Vol.18 No.3
Atolmis rubricollis (L.) and Arctia flavia (Fuessly) are reported for the first time from the Korean Peninsula. Three unknown species from 5. Korea, Diacrisia irene (B.) Hyphoraia aulica (L.), and Parasemin plantaginis (L.) are discovered from N. Korea. Colour photos of adults and genitalia are provided.
