Full spectrum estimation of helicopter background and cosmic gamma-ray contribution for airborne measurements

Kotík Lukáš,Ohera Marcel 한국원자력학회 2023 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.55 No.3

The airborne radiation monitoring has been used in geophysics for more than forty years and now it also has its important role in emergency monitoring. The aircraft background and the cosmic gamma-rays contribute to the measured gamma spectrum on the aircraft board. This adverse effect should be eliminated before the data processing. The paper describes two semiparametric methods to estimate the full spectrum aircraft background and cosmic gamma-ray contribution from spectra measured at altitudes where terrestrial contribution is negligible. The methods only assume to know possible peak positions in spectra and their full width at half maximum, that can be easily obtained e.g. from terrestrial measurement. The methods were applied to real experimental data acquired on Mi-17 and Bell 412 helicopter boards. The IRIS airborne gamma-ray spectrometer, with 4 4 L NaI(Tl) crystals, produced by Pico Envirotec Inc., Canada, was used on helicopters’ boards. To obtain valid estimate of the aircraft background and the cosmic contribution, the measurements over sea and large water areas were carried out. However, the satisfactory results over inland were also achieved comparing with those acquired over large water areas

Interpretácia textov Ivana Štrpku v troch albumoch Deža Ursinyho

        Gabriel Lukáč 한국슬라브어학회 2021 슬라브어연구 Vol.26 No.1

Ivan Štrpka is one of the most important Slovak poets of the second half of 20th century. This presented study analyses a fragment of his individual creative development. It is based on the interpretation of selected texts from the first three albums, which came from Štrpka’s long-term cooperation with Slovak art-rock composer Dežo Ursiny. The study reflects on their individual development as well as the process of searching for their common voice. First precondition of the interpretation is a definition of basic theoretical terms and setting the overall methodology of the study. This makes the main objective of the study’s theoretical part. The actual interpretation focuses on selected texts from albums Childhood's Mainland (1978), New Maps of Silence (1979) and Blue Hill (1981). It is expected that the process of searching for their common voice will be most obvious in these early phases of their cooperation. The chosen texts also seem to be most significant study materials for the individual albums. The main objective of the study is to identify intertextual relations between analysed texts, comment on the mutual development of Ivan Štrpka and Dežo Ursiny and emphasize the historical significance and uniqueness of their creative work in Slovak mainstream and independent musical scene. .

K pokusom o súčasný slovenský historický román

        Gabriel Lukáč 한국슬라브어학회 2020 슬라브어연구 Vol.25 No.1

Memory is one of the major biopsychical abilities of every human being. As it is a precondition of every creative process, memory can also act as an aesthetic object. Cultural memory as an institutionalized form of collective memory is becoming one of the major topical sources in world literature around 2000. Besides literary science, the research of memory is becoming prominent in whole social sciences and the tendency is becoming observable on either global or national scale. In the last fifteen years, Slovak literature has been characterized by an increasing number of longer fictional texts thematising modern European history. This movement can be perceived as a reaction to international trends and can be observed in the production as well as the perception of literary texts. Slovak literature is characterized by more than fifty-year long tradition of short fictional forms (short stories, novellas, etc.), whereas novels were considered as rather exceptional. Anyhow, mostly extraliterary phenomena were highly influential in this current movement. The recent significant rise of far-right extremism in European countries became one of the most important reasons for such a reaction. There is a noticeable social imperative to react on such tendencies in times when the last eyewitnesses of Holocaust and World War II pass away. Because the clerical fascist Slovak State served as a client state of Nazi Germany in WWII, the need for re-evaluation of modern Slovak history is even more prominent. The ability to perceive this historical period objectively was suppressed by following forty years of the totalitarian socialist establishment. Although the period after November 1989 gave Slovak authors freedom to perceive modern history without any ideological restrictions and with necessary time for re-evaluation, it is still debatable if their attempts to write distinguished historical novel were successful. This article introduces the literary tendency in its complexity. It lists the most important authors of the movement and the analytical part consists of critical interpretations of three contemporary Slovak writers – Pavol Rankov, Peter Krištúfek and Silvester Lavrík.

Expandable Lung Epithelium Differentiated from Human Embryonic Stem Cells

        Kotasová Hana,Capandová Michaela,Pelková Vendula,Dumková Jana,Koledová Zuzana,Remšík Ján,Souček Karel,Garlíková Zuzana,Sedláková Veronika,Rabata Anas,Vaňhara Petr,Moráň Lukáš,Pečinka Lukáš,Porokh Volo 한국조직공학과 재생의학회 2022 조직공학과 재생의학 Vol.19 No.5

BACKGROUND The progenitors to lung airway epithelium that are capable of long-term propagation may represent an attractive source of cells for cell-based therapies, disease modeling, toxicity testing, and others. Principally, there are two main options for obtaining lung epithelial progenitors: (i) direct isolation of endogenous progenitors from human lungs and (ii) in vitro differentiation from some other cell type. The prime candidates for the second approach are pluripotent stem cells, which may provide autologous and/or allogeneic cell resource in clinically relevant quality and quantity. METHODS By exploiting the differentiation potential of human embryonic stem cells (hESC), here we derived expandable lung epithelium (ELEP) and established culture conditions for their long-term propagation (more than 6 months) in a monolayer culture without a need of 3D culture conditions and/or cell sorting steps, which minimizes potential variability of the outcome. RESULTS These hESC-derived ELEP express NK2 Homeobox 1 (NKX2.1), a marker of early lung epithelial lineage, display properties of cells in early stages of surfactant production and are able to differentiate to cells exhibitting molecular and morphological characteristics of both respiratory epithelium of airway and alveolar regions. CONCLUSION Expandable lung epithelium thus offer a stable, convenient, easily scalable and high-yielding cell source for applications in biomedicine.

Effect of bamboo and rice straw biochars on the mobility and redistribution of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) in contaminated soil

        Lu, K.,Yang, X.,Gielen, G.,Bolan, N.,Ok, Y.S.,Niazi, N.K.,Xu, S.,Yuan, G.,Chen, X.,Zhang, X.,Liu, D.,Song, Z.,Liu, X.,Wang, H. Academic Press 2017 Journal of Environmental Management Vol.186 No.2

<P>Biochar has emerged as an efficient tool to affect bioavailability of heavy metals in contaminated soils. Although partially understood, a carefully designed incubation experiment was performed to examine the effect of biochar on mobility and redistribution of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in a sandy loam soil collected from the surroundings of a copper smelter. Bamboo and rice straw biochars with different mesh sizes (<0.25 mm and <1 mm), were applied at three rates (0, 1, and 5% w/w). Heavy metal concentrations in pore water were determined after extraction with 0.01 M CaCl2. Phytoavailable metals were extracted using DTPA/TEA (pH 7.3). The European Union Bureau of Reference (EUBCR) sequential extraction procedure was adopted to determine metal partitioning and redistribution of heavy metals. Results showed that CaCl2-and DTPA-extractable Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn concentrations were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in the bamboo and rice straw biochar treated soils, especially at 5% application rate, than those in the unamended soil. Soil pH values were significantly correlated with CaCl2-extractable metal concentrations (p < 0.01). The EUBCR sequential extraction procedure revealed that the acid extractable fractions of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn decreased significantly (p < 0.05) with biochar addition. Rice straw biochar was more effective than bamboo biochar in decreasing the acid extractable metal fractions, and the effect was more pronounced with increasing biochar application rate. The effect of biochar particle size on extractable metal concentrations was not consistent. The 5% rice straw biochar treatment reduced the DTPA-extractable metal concentrations in the order of Cd < Cu < Pb < Zn, and reduced the acid extractable pool of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn by 11, 17, 34 and 6%, respectively, compared to the control. In the same 5% rice straw biochar treatments, the organic bound fraction increased by 37, 58, 68 and 18% for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, respectively, compared to the control, indicating that the immobilized metals were mainly bound in the soil organic matter fraction. The results demonstrated that the rice straw biochar can effectively immobilize heavy metals, thereby reducing their mobility and bioavailability in contaminated soils. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Analysis of Grapevine rupestris stem pitting-associated virus in Slovakia Reveals Differences in Intra-Host Population Diversity and Naturally Occurring Recombination Events

        Miroslav Glasa,Lukáš Predajňa,Katarína Šoltys,Nina Sihelská,Alžbeta Nagyová,Thierry Wetzel,Sead Sabanadzovic 한국식물병리학회 2017 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.33 No.1

Grapevine rupestris stem pitting-associated virus(GRSPaV) is a worldwide-distributed pathogen ingrapevines with a high genetic variability. Our studyrevealed differences in the complexity of GRSPaVpopulation in a single host. A single-variant GRSPaVinfection was detected from the SK30 grapevine plant. On the contrary, SK704 grapevine was infected bythree different GRSPaV variants. Variant-specific RTPCRdetection protocols have been developed in thiswork to study distribution of the three different variantsin the same plant during the season. This studyshowed their randomized distribution in the infectedSK704 grapevine plant. Comparative analysis of fulllengthgenome sequences of four Slovak GRSPaVisolates determined in this work and 14 database sequencesshowed that population of the virus clusterinto four major phylogenetic lineages. Moreover, ouranalyses suggest that genetic recombination along withpoint mutations could play a significant role in shapingevolutionary history of GRSPaV and contributedto its extant genetic diversification.
