      • Myanmar`s Diversification of its Foreign Relations: The European Union

        ( Ludovica Marchi ) 한국EU학회 2017 Asia-Pacific Journal of EU Studies Vol.15 No.1

This article focuses on the former Myanmar President Thein Sein`s efforts to counterbalance Beijing`s sway over Yangon and the EU`s attempts to identify a role for itself in the region. It aims to discuss the assumption that, by sponsoring the 2016 Special Partnership for Democracy, Peace and Prosperity with Myanmar, the EU was seeking to promote its role in Southeast Asia. It focuses on a few developments that contribute towards enhancing the EU`s involvement in cooperating with Myanmar. It examines how the former Myanmar President entertained diplomatic relations, in 2013, with the European capitals and the EU, and questions whether President Sein was possibly making efforts to free the country from subjection to other powers, specifically China. It discusses how Yangon`s slight distancing of itself from Beijing, combined with Sein`s opening up towards Europe, played the effect of boosting political activity regarding Myanmar at the EU level. It explores the EU`s policies on Myanmar and whether these attempt to respond to Sein`s search for assistance. It, lastly, assesses the article`s assumption. The article employs EU official documents, Southeast Asian and western media, scholarly works and other secondary publications to contribute to the analysis.

      • Le dialecte au theatre: le defi de la traduction Reflexions a la lumiere des traductions et de mises en scene francaises de Filumena Marturano

        ( Ludovica Maggi ) 한국통역번역학회 2013 FORUM Vol.11 No.2

This paper specifically focuses on the translation of dialects in theatre, suggesting that no unique solution appears to exist for the rendition of dialects in the target text. Indeed, the article underlines the importance of considering both the status of dialect in the linguistic system underlying the source text and its literary and dramaturgical function in the play which is to be translated. The linguistic horizon of the receiving public, together with its sensibility to dialects and to linguistic diversity, also plays a key role in determining the translation. Moreover, when it comes to translating a play for the scene, the director’s interpretation of the text can also have an influence on the translator’s approach to dialect. Finally, the performance itself can be seen as an additional means of transposing the cultural identity and the dramaturgical function of dialect, thus completing or replacing the linguistic translation. Three French translations of the Neapolitan play Filumena Marturano will be analyzed in order to illustrate what is at stake for translation when dialects enter the stage.

      • February 2022: Russia And Europe’s Challenging Time The Practice Approach

        ( Ludovica Marchi ) 한국EU학회 2023 Asia-Pacific Journal of EU Studies Vol.21 No.1

Putin’s Russia’s contentious position, that culminated in the incursion into Ukraine in 2022, creates a puzzling situation within international affairs and European politics. Informed by Bourdieu’s sociology and Neumann and Pouliot’s study of practice theory and approach, this empirical investigation explores whether and how the ‘lack of fit between practices and the field’ where they are performed has important consequences that hamper security. It deals with practices originated by Moscow, at intervals interacting with the European Union. By introducing ‘confrontational’ and ‘contentious’ positions as originating from ‘background knowledge’, this enquiry adds an extra layer of analysis to the practice logic with regard to the theory. By testing the working of the practice perspective concerning this investigation’s aim, this enquiry demonstrates the virtue of the practice approach in terms of policy.

      • Micro Communities of Practice and EU’s Foreign Policy: Rome, Brussels, and Paris1

        ( Marchi Ludovica ) 한국EU학회 2021 Asia-Pacific Journal of EU Studies Vol.19 No.1

Although the practice approach and the community of practice have generally been studied, the relationship between communities of practice has mostly escaped the attention of EU foreign policy scholars. This empirical investigation contributes to this relatively less explored area. Its central question constitutes whether and how the practice approach makes sense of the actions of micro communities of practice focused on European foreign policy, when practices involve actions at the local, national and European/supranational levels. It motivates an interest in the practice mechanism, since this perspective allows the identification of otherwise unexplored experiences that are critical to the functioning of European foreign policy. In fact, it argues that a practice approach helps us to distinguish different understandings of the EU that might be crucial for the performance of European foreign policy. It applies the practice approach to three micro communities of practice which constitute the case study: in Rome, Brussels and Paris, all of them focused on ‘European foreign policy and/on China’s Belt and Road initiative’. Methodologically, it combines a discourse analysis with content analysis, and shows that the use of these and of the practice perspective demonstrates acceptance of the EU, resistance to it, and suggestions about improving the EU’s foreign policy. The analysis of the results concentrates on theory and policy. Regarding the theory, the findings demonstrate that the practice approach makes sense of actions of communities of practice operating at a local, national, and European/supranational level. Regarding policy, the findings provide evidence that the practices examined here contribute suggestions regarding new substance for European foreign policy. The investigation employs sources derived from the author’s conversation at the citizens’ level in Rome in the context of China and the EU; it draws on the European institutions’ official documents to explore policy making in Brussels regarding China; and uses a diplomatic strategy to investigate a Europe that speaks with one voice, in Paris.

Impact Attenuator Optimum Design for a FSAE Racing Car by Numerical and Experimental Crash Analysis

        Coppola Ludovica,De Marco Bruno,Niola Vincenzo,Sakhnevych Aleksandr,Timpone Francesco 한국자동차공학회 2020 International journal of automotive technology Vol.21 No.6

One of the most important requirements of the Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) race cardesign competition is that the car structure must guarantee a high protection level in case of frontal impacts, by preventing intrusions into the driver foot zone or dangerous deceleration levels. These functions are mainly performed by the impact attenuators, which have to guarantee a high specific energy absorption capacity (SEA) and in order to preserve vehicle performances, have to be as light weighted as possible. The aim of this study is the design of an impact attenuator, to be mounted on a Formula SAE car, which main purpose is to obtain the optimal crash energy management, maximizing the absorbed energy and optimizing the geometry. The outcome of the study highlights that the absorber structure made up of honeycomb sandwich panels (primary energy absorbers), realized by means of different aluminium alloys employing an innovative design considering particular geometrical cavities within the structure, could lead to reduce the overall weight and to achieve a more progressive deformation during the impact.

Resolution of a Severe Grade of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome with Mandibular Advancement Device: A Case Report

        Alberto De Stefani,Giovanni Bruno,Ludovica Agostini,Luca Mezzofranco,Antonio Gracco 대한수면학회 2020 sleep medicine research Vol.11 No.1

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a disorder of the sleep with episodes of the obstruction at the upper airway that can be recurrent, partial or complete. The continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the gold treatment for OSAS, but many patients do not tolerate this kind of treatment, and for this reason mandibular advancement device are used. A 55-year-old Caucasian man affected by severe OSAS [apnea-hypopnea index (AHI): 51, lowest saturation value (NADIR): 77%] came at Padua University Hospital Dental Clinic after ENT evaluation to consider an alternative treatment to CPAP. After a surgery treatment and the use of oral appliance (Somnodent, Somnomed Limited) associated with vertical elastics AHI improve to 2.4 and NADIR to 88%.

PECS II block is associated with lower incidence of chronic pain after breast surgery

        Alessandro De Cassai,Claudio Bonanno,Ludovica Sandei,Francesco Finozzi,Michele Carron,Alberto Marchet 대한통증학회 2019 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.32 No.4

Background: Breast cancer is complicated by a high incidence of chronic postoperative pain (25%-60%). Regional anesthesia might play an important role in lowering the incidence of chronic pain; however it is not known if the pectoral nerve block (PECS block), which is commonly used for breast surgery, is able to prevent this complication. Our main objective was therefore to detect any association between the PECS block and chronic pain at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months in patients undergoing breast surgery. Methods: We conducted a prospective, monocentric, observational study. We enrolled 140 consecutive patients undergoing breast surgery and divided them in patients receiving a PECS block and general anesthesia (PECS group) and patients receiving only general anesthesia (GA group). Then we considered both intraoperative variables (intravenous opioids administration), postoperative data (pain suffered by the patients during the first 24 postoperative hours and the need for additional analgesic administration) and development and persistence of chronic pain (at 3, 6, 9, and 12 mo). Results: The PECS group had a lower incidence of chronic pain at 3 months (14.9% vs. 31.8%, P = 0.039), needed less intraoperative opioids (fentanyl 1.61 μg/kg/hr vs. 3.3 μg/kg/hr, P < 0.001) and had less postoperative pain (3 vs. 4, P = 0.017). Conclusions: The PECS block might play an important role in lowering incidence of chronic pain, but further studies are needed.
