Effect of Impeller Blade Number on Kla in Mechanically Agitated Vessels

Effects of impeller blade number on gas dispersion and mass transfer rate were thoroughly investigated for mechanically agitated vessels equipped with 2-, 4-, 6- and 8-straight blades disk turbine impellers. The results show that under the same rotational speed, the impeller with more blades always can disperse gas more effectively, which induces a higher value of $lt;K_La$gt;. However, with the same total power consumption, the 4-blade impeller can obtain a higher $lt;K_La$gt; value than the 6- and 8-blade impellers under a lower gassing rate condition (Q-g$lt;0.5vvm), but if Q_g) exceeds 0.5vvm, the 6-blade impeller will perform better than the 4- and 8- blade impellers. To examine the results obtained from the single impeller systems, the same approach is applied to measure $lt;K_La$gt; values for the triple stage 6-blade impeller system (3×6) and quadruple stage 4-blade impeller system (4×4). From the experimental results, it can be found that the 4×4 system gives higher $lt;K_La$gt; value than the 3×6 system under gas completely dispersed conditions. By correlating $lt;K_La$gt; with n_b, N and V_s, the following correlation can be given as: $lt;K_La$gt; = 0.00119n^(0.62)_bN^(1.56)V^(0.4)_s $lt;K_La$gt; = 0.0297n^(0.1)_b(P_s/V)^(0.34)V^(0.48)_s These two correlations can also be used to evaluate the mass transfer coefficient of each impeller region for the multiple impeller systems and the deviation is always less than 10%.
A controller design for high-quality images on microcapsule active-matrix electrophoretic displays

Active-matrix electrophoretic display (AMEPD) is commonly used for the applications of smart handheld reading devices such as e-books and e-news. This paper presents a new reduced waveform lookup table storage method that reduces the associated lookup table by approximately 2n (n is the number of gray levels employed) times the conventional one. The paper also proposes a driving method for image display. The method provides high-speed performance for image display and also effectively eliminates the image residue, achieving high image quality. The prototyped controller was connected to a 6" AMEPD panel, whose excellent display quality demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed controller design.

Three compounds, vanillic acid, p-hydroxylcinnamic acid, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde have been isolated from the ethylacetate extract of Sparganium stoloniferum Buch.-Ham roots using silica gel open column chromatography, preparative thin-layer chromatography (pTLC) and reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography. The structures of the compounds were established on the basis of IR, extensive 1D NMR, and MS analyses. The ethylacetate (EtOAc) extract, vanillic acid, and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde showed α-glucosidase inhibition activity of 72.71%, 20.13%, and 30.42%, at the concentration of 10 ㎍/mL, respectively. The EtOAc extract exhibited strong antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 24.37 ㎍/mL against DPPH radical scavenging activity, the vanillic acid, p-hydroxylcinnamic acid, and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde with an IC50 value of 2.10 μM, 1.59 μM, and 2.72 μM against DPPH, respectively.

The activation of heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) can be induced by the changes in environmental pH, but the mechanism of HSF1 activation by acidification is not completely understood. This paper reports that a low pH (pH~6.0) can trigger human HSF1 activation. Considering the involvement of the imidazole group of histidine residues under acid pH stress, an in vitro EMSA experiment, Trp-fluorescence spectroscopy, and protein structural analysis showed that the residue, His83, is the essential for pH-dependent human HSF1-activation. To determine the roles of His83 in the HSF1-mediated stress response affecting the cellular acid resistance, mouse embryo fibroblasts with normal wild-type or mutant mouse HSF1 expression were preconditioned by heating or pH stress. The results suggest that His83 is essential for HSF1 activation or the HSF1-mediated transcription of heat shock proteins, in protecting cells from acid pH stress.

One new stilbene glucoside (6), along with five known compounds (1-5), were isolated from the roots of Polygonum multiflorum Thumb., and their chemical structures established based on physicochemical and spectroscopic data. Of the compounds, compound 3 showed DNA topoisomerase I and II inhibitory activities.
