The Korean Turn” in Philippine Popular Culture: The Story So Far
( Louie Jon A. Sanchez ) 부산외국어대학교 아세안연구원 2024 Suvannabhumi Vol.16 No.1
In this paper, I will pursue initial ideas I formulated in 2012 about the permeation of Korean influences in Philippine popular culture, particularly in the production of serialized TV drama/soap operas or the “teleserye” [tele for television + “serye” or series; thus, TV drama series]. I called the phenomenon the “Korean Turn” as I observed the emulation of Korean televisual drama (nowadays called K-Drama) modes and practices by local production through various means of cultural appropriation. This time, I will expand my exploration to other aspects of Philippine entertainment and other cultural practices. I will also update my observations on the continuing “Korean turn” in the teleserye. I will argue, on the one hand, about the success and soft power of hallyu or the “Korean wave” in the Philippines; and on the other, about Philippine culture's enduring ingenuity in its reception and repurposing of hallyu. Ideas to be yielded here will form part of a potential framework in understanding the dynamics of the interface between Korean and Philippine cultures, in the context of globalization. I
Archipeligiality as a Southeast Asian Poetic in Cirilo F. Bautista`1s Sunlight on Broken Stones
( Louie Jon A. Sanchez ) 부산외국어대학교 동남아지역원 2014 Suvannabhumi Vol.6 No.1
Archipeligiality, a concept continuously being developed by the scholar, is one that attempts to articulate the Filipino sense of place as discoursed in/through its literatures. As a country composed of 7,107 islands, the very fragmentation and division of the country, as well as its multiculturality and multilinguality, have become the very means by which Filipino writers have "imagined" so to speak-that is, also, constructed, into a singular, united frame-the "nation." This, the author supposes, is an important aspect to explore when it comes to discoursing the larger Southeast Asian imagination, or poetic, as similar situations (i.e.Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore), may soon compel for a comparative critico-literary perspective. This paper continues this exploratory "geoliterary" discourse by looking at a Filipino canonical work in English by CiriloF. Bautista, the epic The Trilogy of Saint Lazarus, the title of which already signals a geographic allusion to the first map-name granted by the Spanish colonizer to the Philippines in the region, and consequently the first signification of the country’s subjected existence in the colonial imagination. The work, published between 1970 and 1998, is composed of three parts: The Archipelago, Telex Moon, and Sunlight on Broken Stones, which won the 1998 Philippine Independence Centennial Literary Prize. In these epics, notions of Philippine history and situation were discoursed, and Filipino historical figures were engaged in dialogue by the poet/the poet’s voice, with the end of locating the place [where history and time had brought it; or its direction or trajectory as a nation, being true to the Filipino maxim of ang di lumingon sa pinanggalingan, di makararating sa paroroonan (the one who does not look back to his origins would not reach his destination)]. of the Philippines not only in the national imagination, but in this paper, in the wider regional consciousness. The paper proposes that the archipelagic concept is an important and unique characteristic of the Southeast Asian situation, and thus, may be a means to explicate the clearly connected landscapes of the region’s imagination through literature. This paper focuses on Sunlight on Broken Stones.

Objective: To determine the risk factors associated with radiographic changes and clinical outcomes following 3-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) using rigidplate constructs and cortico-cancellous allograft. ACDF has demonstrated efficacy for treatment of multilevel degenerative cervical conditions, but current data exists in small heterogeneous forms. Methods: A retrospective review included 98 patients with primary 3-level ACDF surgery at one institution from 2008 to 2013 with minimum 1-year follow-up. Cervical sagittal vertical axis (SVA), segmental height, fusion, and lordosis radiographs were measured preoperatively and at 2 postoperative periods. Results: Rates of asymptomatic pseudarthroses and total reoperations were 18% and 4%, respectively. Results demonstrated immediate improvements in cervical lordosis (5.5°, p<0.01) and segmental height (5.0-mm increase, p<0.01) with little changes in the cervical SVA (3.2-mm increase, p<0.01). The segmental height decreased from immediate postoperative period to final follow-up (1.7-mm decrease, p<0.01). Older age was protective against radiolucent lines (p<0.05). Patient-reported outcomes significantly improved following surgery (p<0.01). Current smoking status and diagnosis of diabetes mellitus had no impact on radiographic or clinical outcomes. Risk factors were not identified for the 5 reoperations (4%). Conclusion: Three-level ACDF with rigid-plating and cortico-cancellous allograft is an effective procedure for degenerative diseases of the cervical spine without the application of additional adjuncts or combined anteriorposterior cervical surgeries. Significant improvements in cervical lordosis, segmental height, and segmental alignment can be achieved with little change in cervical SVA and a low rate of reoperations over short-term follow-up. Similarly, patient-reported outcomes show significant improvements.

The endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow Hybognathus amarus was cultured in 2.44-m-diameter outdoor tanks in a 131-day yield trial to assess growth, survival, and percentage of taggable-sized fish (${\geq}35mm$ total length) when stocked at 500/tank (1.07 million/ha), 1,000/tank (2.14 million/ha), and 1,500/tank (3.21 million/ha). At harvest, fish averaged 45.6 mm and 0.94 g in the 500/tank treatment, 42.6 mm and 0.74 g in the 1,000/tank treatment, and 38.4 mm and 0.55 g in the 1,500/tank treatment; the differences were significant (P = 0.05). Survival in the three treatments was 70%, 64%, and 52%, respectively, but the differences were not significant. Percent taggable-sized fish was 86%, 89%, and 65%, respectively, but the differences were not significant. Yield was 672.5 kg/ha, 1,026.6 kg/ha, and 887.8 kg/ha, respectively; yield in the 1,000/tank treatment was significantly greater than that in the 500/tank treatment, but was not significantly greater than that of the 1,500/tank treatment. This facility is a conservation facility and a major goal is to raise fish without formulated feed. Fertilization produced good growth for the first month, but little growth occurred during the second month so supplemental feed had to be used for the final 60 d of the yield trial.
