Effect of Saline Concentrations on Biological Nitrification in Batch Reactor

Young Joon Lee, Nguyen Viet Hoang, Nguyen Hong Khanh, Pham Tuan Linh, Gi Youn Kim 조선대학교 기초과학연구원 2011 조선자연과학논문집 Vol.4 No.2

Pham Tuan Linh2 and Gi Youn Kim This study was carried out on 4 batch reactors to determine the specific ammonium oxidizing rate (SAOR), specific nitrate forming rate (SNFR) and inhibitory degree of nitrifying activities with saline concentrations. Under salt free condition ammonia was consumed during the reaction period within 200 min. When the salt level increased to 10, 20 and 30 g NaClL-1 in reactor, ammonia depletion took 250, 300 and above 350 min, respectively. During concentration above 10 g NaClL-1, there was nitrite accumulation. Also, at 30 g NaClL-1 ammonia did not depleted and NO2 --N accumulated until the final reaction. Nitrate formation rates decreased with increasing salt concentration. SAOR and SNFR showed a decreasing trend as salinity concentrations were increased. The SAOR was reduced from 0.2 to 0.08 mg NH4+-N g-1VSS day-1 as the salt concentration increased from 0 to 30 g NaCLL-1. Similarly, the SNFR decreased from 0.26 kg NO3--N kg-1VSS day-1 at saline free to 0.1 kg NO3--N kg-1VSS day-1 at saline 30 g L-1. A severe inhibition of nitrifiers activity was observed at increased salt concentrations. The inhibition ratio of specific ammonium oxidation rates were 17, 47 and 60% on the reactor of 10, 20 and 30 g NaClL-1 added, respectively. The inhibition ratio of specific nitrate forming rates also were inhibited 30, 53 and 62% on the reactor of 10, 20 and 30 g NaClL-1 added, respectively. As the salinity concentrations increased from 0 to 30 mg NaClL-1, the average MLSS concentration increased from 1,245 to 1,735 mgL-1. The SS concentration of supernatant in reactor which settled about 30 minutes was not severely difference between concentration of salt free reactor and one of those high salt contained reactors

Remoteness and distance eigenvalues of a graph

Lin, H.,Das, K.Ch.,Wu, B. North Holland ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2016 Discrete Applied Mathematics Vol.215 No.-

<P>Let G be a connected graph of order n with diameter d. Remoteness rho of G is the maximum average distance from a vertex to all others and partial derivative(1) >= ... >= partial derivative(n) are the distance eigenvalues of G. Aouchiche and Hansen (0000), Aouchiche and Hansen conjectured that rho + partial derivative(3) > 0 when d >= 3 and rho + partial derivative(left perpendicular7d//right perpendicular) > 0. In this paper, we confirm these two conjectures. Furthermore, we give lower bounds on partial derivative(n) + rho and partial derivative(1) - rho when G not congruent to K-n and the extremal graphs are characterized. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Effect of Thyroid Hormones on the Redox Balance of Broiler Chickens

Lin, H.,Decuypere, E.,Buyse, J. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2008 Animal Bioscience Vol.21 No.6

In the present study, two trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of hyper- and hypothyroid status on the redox balance of broiler chickens. In Trial 1, 3 groups of broiler chickens were randomly subjected to one of the three treatments: subcutaneous administration of triiodothyronine (T3, $150{\mu}g/kg$ BW), methimazole (MMI, 150 mg/kg BW), or saline. The blood, liver and heart were sampled at 3 h after injection. In Trial 2, three groups of 20 broiler chickens were randomly fed with one of the three diets: control, dietary supplementation of T3 (1.5 mg/kg diet) or MMI (1 g/kg diet) for 7 days. In trial 1, the plasma concentrations of T3 and T3 to thyronine ratio (T3/T4) were significantly increased by T3 injection. Plasma levels of thiobarbituric acid reacting substances (TBARS) tended to be increased (p = 0.067) by both T3 and MMI treatments while the ferric reduced/antioxidant capacity (FRAP) was increased only by MMI treatment. Acute T3 treatment had no significant effect on the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the concentrations of FRAP and TBARS in either liver or heart tissue. In contrast, the hepatic activities of SOD were decreased (p<0.05) while the cardiac levels of FRAP were significantly increased (p<0.0001) by MMI treatment. In chronic treatments, the rectal temperature of chickens was significantly decreased (p<0.05) by MMI treatment. The circulating T3 levels were significantly increased (p<0.05) by long-term T3 treatment, and showed a trend to decrease in MMI treatment. The plasma concentrations of TBARS were significantly (p<0.05) increased by MMI treatment. All the redox parameters measured in either liver or heart were not significantly altered by either long-term T3 or MMI treatment except that the hepatic SOD activities were significantly augmented by T3 treatment. The result showed that neither acute nor long-term elevation of circulating T3 levels induced lipid peroxidation in broiler chickens. The enhanced enzymatic antioxidant system (SOD in cardiac tissue) may be involved in the protection of the bird to increased oxidative challenge. The responses of redox balance to changed thyroid state seem to be tissue specific.

A Study on the Plasma Biochemical Indices of Heat-Stressed Broilers

        Lin, H.,Du, R.,Gu, X.H.,Li, F.C.,Zhang, Z.Y. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2000 Animal Bioscience Vol.13 No.9

Four experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of temperature and humidity on biochemical indices of Arbor Acres broilers at different weeks of age. The alkaline phosphatase (AKP), acid phosphatase (ACP), lactic dehydrogenase (LD), creatine kinase (CK), plasma glucose (Glu), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), chloride (Cl), urea nitrogen (UN), uric acid (UA), plasma thyroxin (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and insulin levels were determined in all the four experiments. In experiment 1, the plasma Glu, LD and CK levels were increased by heat exposure ($35{^{\circ}C}$ and 35, 60, or 85% RH, 2 h) and this effect was aggravated by longer exposure (24 h). No significant changes (p>0.05) were found in Ca concentration, activity of AKP and ACP. In experiment 2, temperature (10, 20, 30, $33{^{\circ}C}$) had significant effect on the levels of K, Cl, UN, UA levels and the activity of LD (p<0.01), but had no significant influence on the activity of CK (p>0.05). The UN, UK and LD levels were elevated by low temperature $(10{^{\circ}C})$ (p<0.01), Cl content was increased by high temperature ($(33{^{\circ}C})$ (p<0.01), and K level was decreased by high ($(33{^{\circ}C})$ or low $(10{^{\circ}C})$ temperature and increased by medium temperature $(30{^{\circ}C})$ (p<0.01). The humidity (35, 85% RH) only had significant effect on Cl concentration which was decreased by high humidity (p<0.01). In experiment 3, the result showed that only the LD and CK activity were significantly increased (p<0.01) by high temperature (7, 24, 28, $32{^{\circ}C}$) or high humidity (35, 85% RH). Temperature and humidity had no significant effect on K, Cl, UA, UN and Glu levels (p>0.05). In experiment 4 (24, 27, 30, $33{^{\circ}C}$; 30, 45, 60, 75, 90% RH), plasma T3 level was declined by high temperature $(33{^{\circ}C})$, and this phenomena disappeared in birds under high temperature and high humidity environment. T4 concentration in plasma was not affected by temperature (p>0.05), but was increased by high or low humidity (p<0.01). Neither temperature nor humidity had significant effect on plasma insulin concentration (p>0.05). The results of the four experiments suggested that broilers at different growth periods might have different thermal requirements and would response differently to heat exposure. The plasma biochemical indices themselves had big variation; the reaction of the indices to thermal exposure treatment differed with the age of broilers. The big variation of biochemical indices themselves might cover the response of indices to temperature and humidity treatments.

Characterization of extremal graphs from distance signless Laplacian eigenvalues

Lin, H.,Das, K.Ch. North Holland [etc.] 2016 Linear algebra and its applications Vol.500 No.-

<P>Let G = (V, E) be a connected graph with vertex set V (G) = {v(1), v(2),..., v(n)} and edge set E(G). The transmission T-r(vi) of vertex vi is defined to be the sum of distances from vi to all other vertices. Let Tr(G) be the n x n diagonal matrix with its (i, i)-entry equal to Tr-G(v(i)). The distance signless Laplacian is defined as D-Q(G) = Tr(G)+ D(G), where D(G) is the distance matrix of G. Let partial derivative(1)(G) > partial derivative(2)(G) >= ... >= partial derivative(n)(G) denote the eigenvalues of distance signless Laplacian matrix of G. In this paper, we first characterize all graphs with partial derivative(n) (G)= n-2. Secondly, we characterize all graphs with partial derivative(2)(G) is an element of [n - 2, n] when n >= 11. Furthermore, we give the lower bound on partial derivative(2)(G) with independence number alpha and the extremal graph is also characterized. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.</P>

      • Incorporating Nonlinear Contractive Functions into the Fractal Coding

        Lin, H.,Venetsanopoulos, A. N. 대한전자공학회 1994 ISPACS:Intelligent Signal Processing and Communica Vol.1 No.1

In this paper, we introduce nonlinear contractive functions into the fractal coding to solve the decoding divergent problem. Statistical analyses of the fractal codes are given. The results show that the method produces a visually better decoded image while the decoding is about twice faster.

Peroxide Status in Tissues of Heat-Stressed Broilers

Lin, H.,Du, R.,Zhang, Z.Y. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2000 Animal Bioscience Vol.13 No.10

The peroxidation status of tissues was estimated in broilers under acute or chronic heat stress ($32^{\circ}C$, 24 h, $5{\times}24h$) in the present study. The results showed that the lipid peroxide (LPO) concentrations in plasma and liver were elevated (p<0.05) by acute heat stress, and were not influenced in kidney (p>0.05). At the same time, no significant change of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the liver, kidney or plasma was observed. Under chronic heat exposure, the SOD activity in liver was increased (p<0.05) and the LPO concentrations in the liver and plasma were restored to the normal levels. The LPO level in kidney was not affected by chronic heat stress (p>0.05), but SOD activity was significantly decreased (p<0.01). The results suggested that the peroxidation was induced by acute heat stress and disappeared along with the time of heat exposure, and the peroxidation reactions were different among tissues.

Effect of Lactic Fermentation and Spray Drying Process on Bioactive Compounds from Ngoc Linh Ginseng Callus and Lactobacillus plantarum Viability

( Lieu My Dong ),( Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh ),( Nguyen Thi Hoa ),( Dang Thi Kim Thuy ),( Do Dang Giap ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2021 한국미생물·생명공학회지 Vol.49 No.3

Ngoc Linh ginseng is one of the most valuable endemic medicinal herbs in Vietnam. In this study, Ngoc Linh ginseng callus was fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum ATCC 8014 (at 6, 7, and 8 log CFU/ml) to evaluate the extraction efficiency of bioactive compounds. The post-fermentation solution was spray-dried using maltodextrin with or without Stevia rebaudiana (3% and 6% v/v) as the wall material. Bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, polysaccharides, and total saponins, and L. plantarum viability during fermentation and after spray-drying, as well as under simulated gastric digestion, were evaluated in this study. The results showed that probiotic density had a significant effect on bioactive compounds, and L. plantarum at 8 log CFU/ml showed the best results with a short fermentation time compared to other tests. The total content of polyphenols, polysaccharides, and saponins reached 5.16 ± 0.18 mg GAE/g sample, 277.2 ± 6.12 mg Glu/g sample, and 4.17 ± 0.15 mg/g sample, respectively after 20 h of fermentation at the initial density of L. plantarum (8 log CFU/ml). Although there was no difference in the particle structure of the preparation, the microencapsulation efficiency of the bioactive compound in the samples containing S. rebaudiana was higher than that with only maltodextrin. The study also indicated that adding S. rebaudiana improved the viability of L. plantarum in gastric digestion. These results showed that S. rebaudiana, a component stimulating probiotic growth, combined with maltodextrin as a co-prebiotic, improved the survival rate of L. plantarum in simulated gastric digestion.
