      • QoS Aware and Service-Oriented Workflow on GRID

        As the main computing paradigm for resource-intensive scientific applications, Grid[1] enables resource sharing and dynamic allocation of computational resources. Large-scale grids are normally composed of huge numbers of components from different sites, which increases the requirements of workflows and quality of service (QoS) upon these workflows as many of these components have real-time requirements. In this paper, we describe our web services based QoS-aware workflow management system(WfMS) from GridCC project[7] and show how this WfMS can aid to ensure workflows meet the pre-defined QoS requirements and optimise them accordingly.

        Valveless Piezoelectric Micropump of Parallel Double Chambers

        The driving performance of the piezoelectric actuator was simulated by ANSYS software, and the relationship between structure parameters and center displacement/frequency of piezoelectric actuator were obtained. The nozzle/diffuser pipes’structure parameters were optimized according to the results of ANSYS numerical simulation, and flow characteristic parameters such as flow rate and pressure distribution in the pipe were researched. The chamber was manufactured on glass, and nozzle/diffuser pipes were fabricated on <100> silicon by selective-wet etch using MEMS technology. These two components were glued with piezoelectric actuator together to form micropumps with single chamber and micropumps with parallel double chambers. The flow rates of micropumps in different conditions were measured by test system. Finally, a comparison between the test results of micropump with double chambers and that of the single chamber micropump is given.

      • Maximum Likelihood Principle Based Adaptive UKF Algorithm

        In this paper, we investigate the state estimation problem of nonlinear systems under the condition that the prior statistical characteristic of noise is unknown. An adaptive unscented Kalman filter (UKF) is proposed. In this algorithm, the maximum likelihood principle is applied to establish the log likelihood function with the unknown noise statistical characteristics. Then, the noise property estimation problem is transformed into the maximization of the mean of the log likelihood function, which can be achieved by using the expectation maximization algorithm. Finally, a suboptimal adaptive UKF can be obtained. Simulations show that the proposed adaptive UKF algorithm can deal with the problem of filtering accuracy declination of the traditional UKF when the prior noise statistical characteristic is unknown. The proposed algorithm can estimate the statistical parameters online.

        The Chinese Financial Conglomerate and Its Company Law Implications

        In the past decade, China took the general position of separating different financial businesses, and putting them under segregated supervision. Nonetheless, recent amendments to the Commercial Bank Law and Securities Law seemed to open the door for financial conglomerate operations. Two models have been considered in particular, namely the “universal bank” model, prevailing in Europe, and the “financial holding company” (FHC) model in the US. Through theoretic analysis and review of the latest development, this paper suggests that at China’s current stage neither the universal bank nor the FHC model should be embraced hastily without a critical eye. While the FHC seems a likely choice, it contains drawbacks and unfitness that merit discussion. Transforming State Owned Commercial Banks (SOCB) to public-held and truly independent entities shall certainly be a prerequisite and propellant to any meaningful structural reform, including the financial conglomerate issue.

        Platform Strategy and Market Response Impact on the Success of Crowdfunding: A Chinese Case

        Nowadays, crowdfunding presents a promising development. This research focuses on the influence of platform strategy and market response on the success of crowdfunding from the perspective of the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) theory. Detailed product specifications, crowdfunding difficulty coefficient, vivid advertising video such as introduction and music, and recommendations from relevant figures are all used to depict platform strategy. Meanwhile, we use the number of lovers, followers, comments and 1 RMB backers to measure the level of market response. And thus, we model the impact of platform strategy and market response on crowdfunding success with empirical studies based on 400 samples of observed value. We found firstly that there exist significant positive relations between the total amount of funds pledged and detailed product specification, vivid advertising video, recommendations from relevant figures and the number of 1 RMB backers. Secondly, the crowdfunding difficulty of projects affects negatively, and significantly, the total amount of funds pledged. Thirdly, the influence of the number of lovers and followers on funds pledged is not significant.

        The Legal Considerations of Doing M&A with Chinese Companies

        This Paper lines up the important issues which a foreign business or its attorney need to note when engaging in M&A with Chinese companies. In the context of either share or asset acquisition, China is bringing its rules more in line with the international standards. Nevertheless, certain specific points deserve attention and should not be taken for granted, while many others are still undergoing evolution. Some most recent development such as VIE is also reviewed.

        Assessing Oral Test Anxiety and Its Proximal Variables

        The present study primarily aims to investigate the relationship between oral test anxiety and its nine contextual/personal variables. 306 non-English majors in a Chinese university participated in a face-to-face oral English proficiency test and then a questionnaire survey which involved 8 variables selected on the basis of previous research and a preliminary study. It was revealed that students’ average score of general test anxiety as measured by TAI was 37 and they experienced medium degree of oral test anxiety. Correlational analysis demonstrated a positive significant correlation between oral test anxiety and three factors – general test anxiety, perceived test difficulty and examiner impact. Five variables including oral test performance, self-efficacy, previous oral testing experience, preparedness, perceived test difficulty, perceived time constraint were found to relate inversely to oral test anxiety. Gender was shown to have no significant association with the dependent variable. According to the results of the stepwise regression, six of the nine independent variables contributed to the prediction of oral test anxiety. General test anxiety made the greatest contribution, followed by perceptions of difficulty, self-efficacy, examiner impact, oral test performance and preparedness. This study sheds light on the possible sources of anxiety in oral English tests.

        An Approach for Identifying the Temperature of Inductance Motors by Estimating the Rotor Slot Harmonic Based on Model Predictive Control

        In order to satisfy the urgent requirements for the overheating protection of induction motors, an approach that can be used to identify motor temperature has been proposed based on the rotor slots harmonic (RSH) in this paper. One method to accomplish this is to improve the calculation efficiency of the RSH by predicting the stator winding distribution harmonic order by analyzing the harmonics spectrum. Another approach is to increase the identification accuracy of the RSH by suppressing the influence of voltage flashes or current surges during temperature estimation based on model predictive control (MPC). First, an analytical expression of the stator inductance is extracted from a steady-state positive sequence motor equivalent circuit model developed from the rotor flux field orientation. Then a procedure that applies MPC for reducing the identification error of the rotor temperature caused by voltage sag or swell of the power system is given. Due to this work, the efficiency and accuracy of the RSH have been significantly improved and validated our experiments. This work can serves as a reference for the on-line temperature monitoring and overheating protection of an induction motor.

        A Hybrid Traffic Flow Model for Real Time Freeway Traffic Simulation

        Macroscopic traffic flow models play a significant role in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), especially for the urbantraffic control and the dynamic traffic assignment, in which the traffic dynamics usually described by the nonlinear equations aredifficult to be solved and limit the practice application. This paper presents a hybrid macroscopic and microscopic (macromicroscopic)traffic model by extending Daganzo’s Cell Transmission Model (CTM) with the real time speed dynamic. A simplesupplying and demanding function is defined to represent the traffic propagation between the adjacent cell boundaries, and the carfollowingmodel is integrated to specify the dynamics of average speed in each cell. Simulation results with data set collected from a4-kilometre long urban freeway show the performance of the model compared to the METANET model.
