Can The Use of QR Codes Enhance m-Learning in a Blended Learning Environment?

In recent years, with the introduction of smartphones, tablet computers and the advancement of information and communication technology (ICT), there has been a growing interest in the use of Quick Response (QR) codes for educational purposes. The majority of scholarly accounts in this particular topic have been those related to managing libraries, and to a lesser extent to teaching and learning. At present, applications of QR codes in higher education are minimal, and even fewer in a blended learning environment. This paper describes an exploratory project that attempts to introduce three specific examples of basic QR code-driven activities in an Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institution. Learners were asked to scan QR codes using mobile smartphones or tablet computers. Three different types of content, i.e. text-based instruction, Uniform Resource Locater (URL) of video lectures (called iLectures) and URL of self-test activities were made available to learners via the QR codes. A cross-sectional survey was carried out on learners who have been introduced to the QR codes. The objectives of this project are multi-pronged: first is to create awareness of QR codes among learners; second is to encourage and push the use of specific online materials via mobile devices; and third is to determine learners’ attitudes/perceptions towards the use of a combination of smartphones and QR codes in learning. This study is important to an ODL institution like Open University Malaysia (OUM). For a provider of flexible delivery of instructional materials, QR codes can play a significant role in enhancing mobile learning (or m-learning) and engaging learners in their learning process. The research findings are expected to indicate whether or not the integration of smartphones and QR codes can be considered an effective way forward in achieving a semi-ubiquitous m-learning environment.
Machine Learning Algorithm Accuracy for Code-Switching Analytics in Detecting Mood

Nowadays, as we can notice on social media, most users choose to use more than one language in their online postings. Thus, social media analytics needs reviewing as code-switching analytics instead of traditional analytics. This paper aims to present evidence comparable to the accuracy of code-switching analytics techniques in analysing the mood state of social media users. We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) to study the social media analytics that examined the effectiveness of code-switching analytics techniques. One primary question and three sub-questions have been raised for this purpose. The study investigates the computational models used to detect and measures emotional well-being. The study primarily focuses on online postings text, including the extended text analysis, analysing and predicting using past experiences, and classifying the mood upon analysis. We used thirty-two (32) papers for our evidence synthesis and identified four main task classifications that can be used potentially in code-switching analytics. The tasks include determining analytics algorithms, classification techniques, mood classes, and analytics flow. Results showed that CNN-BiLSTM was the machine learning algorithm that affected code-switching analytics accuracy the most with 83.21%. In addition, the analytics accuracy when using the code-mixing emotion corpus could enhance by about 20% compared to when performing with one language. Our meta-analyses showed that code-mixing emotion corpus was effective in improving the mood analytics accuracy level. This SLR result has pointed to two apparent gaps in the research field: i) lack of studies that focus on Malay-English code-mixing analytics and ii) lack of studies investigating various mood classes via the code-mixing approach.
Electrochemical Determination of Chemical Oxygen Demand Based on Boron-Doped Diamond Electrode

A rapid and environment-friendly electrochemical sensor to determine the chemical oxygen demand (COD) has been developed. The boron-doped diamond (BDD) thin-film electrode is employed as the anode, which fully oxidizes organic pollutants and provides a current response in proportion to the COD values of the sample solution. The BDD-based amperometric COD sensor is optimized in terms of the applied potential and the solution pH. At the optimized conditions, the COD sensor exhibits a linear range of 0 to 80 mg/L and the detection limit of 1.1 mg/L. Using a set of model organic compounds, the electrochemical COD sensor is compared with the conventional dichromate COD method. The result shows an excellent correlation between the two methods.

The Sasaq community in Lombok, Indonesia has been recognized as a peasant community with its unique and strong social capital. Sources of social capital recognition can be derived from common terms or expressions and institutions practiced in community daily life. However, there is a trend of neglecting and ignoring those values by the community, especially the youth. Through action research, we would like to revitalize social capital of the community in supporting social and economic development in the rural level. In this paper, we introduce a Strategic Leadership and Learning Organization (SLLO) approach to build community participation in solving social and economic problems. Through regular dialogue, communities come with common agreements and collective action that are perceived as emergence property. Several common agreements are intended to solve community problems actually in line with the objectives of government designated development.
A Design and Development of a Wireless Sensor Network for Potential Monitoring and Localization

This paper presents an analysis of the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) from the radio frequency signals for human identifi cation in an indoor wireless sensor network (WSN). Instead of using closed-circuit television as the existing security platform, this indoor safety system was improved with a convenient, cheap, and low-power solution. The system was developed using 20 of ESP8266-12F Wi-Fi modules transmitters and another 2 of ESP8266-12F as the access points located in 3 m × 3 m area of interest. With a suitable coordinate of sensor nodes, a WSN telemetry could be established to minimize the blind spot area and limit the movement of the intruder with a minimum area of 0.2 m 2 . The RSSI measurement was repeatedly conducted for three diff erent conditions, in an empty room, with the presence of a single intruder and the presence of multiple intruders. Based on the RSSI values, we found that there are distinctive features of data that can be utilized as fl ags for classifying the three above conditions. Besides that, to justify the effi ciency of system performance, we also examined the sensitivity of RSSI values towards the variation of temperature. Our results show that the RSSI average values for both morning and night were practically the same. However, during the afternoon, the RSSI signal strength fl uctuated by − 1.0 dBm. These results motivate the development of an alarm system that only uses the RSSI statistics to detect human presence.
