Lanza, Ezio,Donadon, Matteo,Poretti, Dario,Pedicini, Vittorio,Tramarin, Marco,Roncalli, Massimo,Rhee, Hyungjin,Park, Young Nyun,Torzilli, Guido S. Karger AG 2017 Liver cancer Vol.6 No.1

Background: The treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still a major health issue because of its increasing incidence and because of the complexity of its management. Transarterial embolization (TAE) and transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) are two widely used locoregional therapies in the treatment of HCC, especially for unresectable intermediate and advanced HCCs. Summary: The modern use of TAE and TACE opens new scenarios for the treatment of unresectable HCC and has yielded interesting results. The present work describes the role of transarterial therapies for HCC and focuses on the different Western and Eastern approaches to the study of response predictors. Key Messages: Recent refinements in interventional radiology techniques and in HCC patient selection have facilitated better local control of the disease. The molecular profiling of HCC to predict the response to TACE and TAE will greatly help clinicians identify the optimum therapy.

The structural monitoring of multi-wire strands is of importance to prestressed concrete structures and cable-stayed or suspension bridges. This paper addresses the monitoring of strands by ultrasonic guided waves with emphasis on the signal processing and automatic defect classification. The detection of notch-like defects in the strands is based on the reflections of guided waves that are excited and detected by magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducers. The Discrete Wavelet Transform was used to extract damage-sensitive features from the detected signals and to construct a multi-dimensional Damage Index vector. The Damage Index vector was then fed to an Artificial Neural Network to provide the automatic classification of (a) the size of the notch and (b) the location of the notch from the receiving sensor. Following an optimization study of the network, it was determined that five damage-sensitive features provided the best defect classification performance with an overall success rate of 90.8%. It was thus demonstrated that the wavelet-based multi-dimensional analysis can provide excellent classification performance for notch-type defects in strands.
Taking Asian Fascisms Seriously
Fabio Lanza 고려대학교 민족문화연구원 2017 Cross-Currents Vol.0 No.25
Both Maggie Clinton and Reto Hofmann are clearly aware that writing about “fascism” means dealing with a topic whose relevance is not simply historical—tarring something, even in the seemingly defunct past, with the “f-word” always involves taking a political stance. Still, they probably did not imagine that their books would see the light at a time when “fascists,” either self-professed or identified by others as such, take to the streets of cities around the world with rekindled arrogance, and “fascism” unabashedly claims a place in the supposedly free “marketplace of ideas.” It was therefore difficult, at least for this reader, to approach these volumes without an eerie feeling, a ringing echo of sorts. But it would be a disservice to the work that Clinton and Hofmann have done to let ourselves be too reflexively swayed by what French historian Marc Bloch called “the virus of the present” and fall into simple analogies. The temptation, I must admit, is strong...

Andressa Lanza,Rosselei Caie´l da Silva,Ingrid Duarte dos Santos,Ionara Regina Pizzutti,Karine Cence,Roge´rio Luis Cansian,Jamile Zeni,Eunice Valduga 한국식품과학회 2019 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.28 No.3
The aim of this study was to evaluate themycotoxicological quality of wheat flours used by bakeriesfrom the North Region in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, regarding the presence of mycotoxins. On collecting type-1refined wheat flour, a conglomerate sampling from 13 citiesand 3 bakeries per city (n = 39), selected from the definedregion was performed. The mycotoxins analysis was usingQuEChERS method and UPLC–MS/MS analysis. As aresult, 100% of samples presented contamination by DON,with concentrations ranging from 76.7 to 3630.2 lg kg-1and ZON was found in one sample (26.7 lg kg-1), whichrepresented 2.6% of the analyzed wheat flours. Othermycotoxins (AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, AFG2, DAS, HT-2toxin, OTA, FB1 and FB2) were not detected in the analyzedsamples.

Malakoplakia is a rare granulomatous inflammatory disorder. Its diagnosis depends on histopathological findings; however, high-quality literature regarding proper medical/surgical treatment is lacking. A 38-year-old diabetic female patient was admitted to the emergency room with a history of lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Colonoscopy revealed a lesion in the descending colon, and abdominal computed tomography revealed a splenic flexure mass involving the lower pole of the spleen and upper pole of the left kidney. Biopsies confirmed the diagnosis of malakoplakia. After completing antibiotic treatment, a restaging computed tomography revealed a discrete mass increase; hence, the patient underwent laparoscopic en bloc colectomy and partial nephrectomy. Postoperatively, the patient developed a pancreatic fistula, which was successfully treated with percutaneous drainage and antibiotics. The presence of pathognomonic Michaelis-Gutmann inclusions on histopathology is frequently reported as the key to diagnosing malakoplakia. Herein, we present a successful, minimally invasive surgical treatment for colonic malakoplakia.

Magnetic Nanoparticles for Early Detection of Cancer by Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Lin, Wenbin,Hyeon, Taeghwan,Lanza, Gregory M.,Zhang, Miqin,Meade, Thomas J. Cambridge University Press (Materials Research Soc 2009 MRS bulletin Vol.34 No.6
Abstract
This article provides a brief overview of recent progress in the synthesis and functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles and their applications in the early detection of malignant tumors by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The intrinsic low sensitivity of MRI necessitates the use of large quantities of exogenous contrast agents in many imaging studies. Magnetic nanoparticles have recently emerged as highly efficient MRI contrast agents because these nanometer-scale materials can carry high payloads while maintaining the ability to move through physiological systems. Superparamagnetic ferrite nanoparticles (such as iron oxide) provide excellent negative contrast enhancement. Recent refinement of synthetic methodologies has led to ferrite nanoparticles with narrow size distributions and high crystallinity. Target-specific tumor imaging becomes possible through functionalization of ferrite nanoparticles with targeting agents to allow for site-specific accumulation. Nanoparticulate contrast agents capable of positive contrast enhancement have recently been developed in order to overcome the drawbacks of negative contrast enhancement afforded by ferrite nanoparticles. These newly developed magnetic nanoparticles have the potential to enable physicians to diagnose cancer at the earliest stage possible and thus can have an enormous impact on more effective cancer treatment.

Development of a blockchain-based marketplace for the Internet of Things data
Luis Sánchez,Jorge Lanza,Iván González,Juan Ramón Santana,Pablo Sotres 한국통신학회 2023 ICT Express Vol.9 No.4
The Internet of Things (IoT) is recognised as a game-changer technology that expands its applicability to a huge variety of domains. The key asset is the data that the myriad of sensors embedded in the environment are constantly generating. The paper describes a Blockchain-based IoT Data Marketplace (BIDM) and presents the proof-of-concept implementation that has been developed to validate it from a functional standpoint. The BIDM enables an ecosystem where sensor owners can expose the observations that their sensors generate while retaining control over who accesses each observation and directly getting revenues according to the price they have set.
A local authority governance model: the case of Parma and ‘MasterTown’
Simone Fanelli,Gianluca Lanza 한국행정학회 2017 International Review of Public Administration Vol.22 No.1
In recent decades, the role and power of local authorities in their relations with citizens has changed. Today, new competences and resources, not usually owned by local authorities, are being embedded into the decision-making process, which necessitates the involvement of local stakeholders. A set of different tools (public-private partnership, project financing, etc.) and purposes (urban renewal, territorial marketing, etc.) has been developed to improve this relationship. This paper presents the experience of Parma, an Italian municipality, where a project called ‘MasterTown’ has been developed with the aim of involving different stakeholders in identifying and planning urban renewal. Analysis shows four key factors for the success of MasterTown project: sharing competences and resources, involving citizens, finding alternative financial resources, and assessing social outcomes. The results could be useful to policy-makers in developing renewal processes meeting the needs of all local stakeholders.
