Hollywood POW films about the Korean War are reminiscent of Puritan captivity narratives; Puritan documents initially endeavored to record honestly their traumatic experience and its effects on their faith. However, as the interests of the popular audience toward which the narratives are directed became predominant, the propagandist value of the captivity became more apparent in the record. These accounts are surely an expression of the Puritans’ anxiety over acculturation by the American Indians. They also confirm their community ideology even though they betray self-doubt toward their moral superiority and exceptionalism. Likewise, Hollywood films depict the contemporary audience's response to the POW issue during and after the Korean War. They scrutinize POW’s cross- cultural encounter, and in particular those ‘unredeemed’ captives who chose to remain the ‘heathen’ land. These films undergo variations according to the public's changing views on these American “turncoats.” Both Prisoner of War (1954)and Bamboo Prison (1954) deny the soldiers' betrayal and their brainwashing. They focus on the prisoners' resistance and condemn the brutality of communists. These films emphasize that any collaboration is simply part of undercover activity and the reason for the prisoners’ refusal of repatriation is to continue their mission. However, Hollywood’s later POW cinema such as The Rack (1956)and Time Limit (1957) begin to reflect the society’s vulnerability and its anxiety and fear of the “Reds.” The films reveal more of the self than the other. They acknowledge the “turncoats’” collaboration and delve into the causes of their submission. They question their dysfunctional families and seemingly weakened masculinity. At the same time, the films reassert American “manifest destiny” and exceptionalism. These, and in particular Toward the Unknown (1956), attempt to heal the wounds of the American people who failed to win the war against the Asian ‘savage.’ Further, they try to restore and reaffirm cultural self-confidence and sense of superiority. Indeed, the Hollywood representation is “propaganda by Americans, about Americans, directed to Americans.”
Effects of Substituting B2O3 for P2O5 on the Structures and Properties of V2O5-P2O5 Glass Systems
Kyungseok Han,황차원,Dong Hwan Kim,Donggun Gwoo,Taehee Kim,Wongyu Choi,Kyungbum Kee,김종환,류봉기 대한금속·재료학회 2012 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.8 No.6
V2O5-B2O3-P2O5 glasses with various compositions were prepared using a normal melt quenching technique, and their characteristics and structural properties were investigated using different techniques. Replacement of P2O5 by B2O3 was found to improve the thermal properties, chemical durability, and room-temperature conductivity. The observed variations in the properties may be correlated with changes in the internal glass network as a result of changes in the chemical composition. Vanadium ions are believed to be present in three possible valence states, namely V3+, V4+, and V5+, and the ratios of these states depend on the glass composition. The observed increases in chemical durability and room-temperature conductivity are assumed to be related to increases in the mean crosslinking density, increases in the number of bridging oxygens, and electron hopping between vanadate ions in different valence states.
Bacillus vallismortis EXTN-1-Mediated Growth Promotion and DiseaseSuppression in Rice
Kyungseok Park,DIBY PAUL,Wan-Hae Yeh 한국식물병리학회 2006 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.22 No.3
Bacillus vallismortis EXTN-1, a biocontrol agent in cucumber, tomato and potato was tested in rice pathosystem against rice fungal pathogens viz. Magnaporthe grisea, Rhizoctonia solani and Cochliobolus miyabeanus. Apart from increasing the yield in the bacterized plants (11.6-12.6% over control), the study showed that EXTN- 1 is effective in bringing about disease suppression against all the tested fungal pathogens. EXTN-1 treatment resulted in 52.11% reduction in rice blast, 83.02% reduction in sheath blight and 11.54% decrease in brown spot symptoms. As the strain is proven as an inducer for systemic resistance based on PR gene expression in Arabidopsis and tobacco models, it is supposed that a similar mechanism works in rice, bringing about disease suppression. The strain could be used as a potent biocontrol and growth-promoting agent in rice cropping system.
De-NOx characteristics of HC-SCR system employing combined Ag/Al2O3 and CuSn/ZSM-5 catalyst
Kyungseok Lee,Byung Chul Choi,김철호,이춘범,오광철 한국공업화학회 2021 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.93 No.-
The combination of Ag/Al2O3 and CuSn/ZSM-5 on catalytic performance was investigated for selectivecatalytic reduction of NOx by H2-assisted C3H6. The Ag loading significantly affected the de-NOxperformance and C3H6 conversion; a low Ag loading in the catalyst (less than 2 wt% Ag) afforded superiorde-NOx performance compared to that obtained with more than 4 wt% Ag, owing to the lack ofagglomeration of Ag particles on the support (Ag/Al2O3) in the former. Considering the C3H6 slip, a veryhigh reaction temperature (above 525℃) was required for complete C3H6 oxidation. A combination of Ag/Al2O3 and CuSn/ZSM-5 allowed complete C3H6 oxidation below 350℃ owing to the superior C3H6oxidation ability of CuSn/ZSM-5, which is the merit of the combined system compared with Ag/Al2O3 orCuSn/ZSM-5 used individually. The best catalytic configuration is the sequential arrangement of 1Ag/Al2O3 + 2Cu1Sn/ZSM-5, which could simultaneously reduce NOx, C3H6, and H2 over a wider temperaturewindow ranging from 300‒600℃. Notably, the reduced NOx was almost entirely reduced to N2 withnegligible generation of N2O, NH3, and HCNO.

This study aims to investigate the catalytic performance of 2Cu/ZSM-5 with different SiO2/Al2O3 ratios(30, 75, and 90) for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by C3H6. The coexistent CO and H2 in theC3H6-SCR process were also evaluated to further improve the de-NOx performance. The SiO2/Al2O3 ratiosand coexistent CO and H2 significantly affected the de-NOx performance and its operating temperaturewindow. The addition of 1 wt.% metal additives (Pt, Ce, Sn, and Mn) to 2Cu/ZSM-5 exhibited a distinctimprovement in catalytic performance. Among the metal-additive catalysts, 2Cu1Sn/ZSM-5 demonstratedfavorable NOx conversion in the H2- or CO-C3H6-SCR process owing to the enhancement of partialoxidation of C3H6 by H2. This resulted in improved low-temperature catalytic performance, without anyaccompanying side reactions that produce NH3, N2O, and HNCO.

Bacillus vallismortis strain EXTN-1 has been proved in eliciting induced systemic resistance (ISR) in several crops. The present paper described the beneficial effects of EXTN-1 in potato as increase in yield and chlorophyll content, and plant protection against Potato Virus Y and X (PVY & PVX). EXTN-1 induced systemic resistance to the plants resulting in significant disease suppression in the field. Also the plants under treatment with EXTN-1 had higher chlorophyll content. The bacterized plants had significantly higher yields over the untreated control plants. The strain induced activation of defense genes, PR-1a and PDF 1.2 in transgenic tobacco model, which indicated the possible role of both SA, and JA pathways in EXTN-1 mediated plant protection against crop diseases.
