An Economic and Environmental Impact Analysis of Renewable Electricity Generation Policy

We analyzed the impact of increasing renewable electricity on Korea’s electricity policy: 8th Basic Plan for Long-term Electricity Supply and Demand; Renewable Energy 3020 Action Plan; and 3<SUP>rd</SUP> Korea Energy Master Plan. We used a single-country static computable general equilibrium model with internalizing CO₂ and air pollutants emissions. We assumed a ~22% reduction compared with the base year emissions due to the Korea Emissions Trading Scheme. We applied six scenarios, where each scenario depends on the increasing rate of the renewable electricity share and total factor productivity (TFP) improvement in the renewable electricity generation industry. As the renewable electricity share increases, the GDP loss increases, but TFP improvement reduces this loss. The share of electricity from fossil fuel and nuclear power decreases due to the increasing share of renewable electricity. However, the share of electricity decreases, and that of fossil fuels increases in national energy consumption with rising electricity prices. Moreover, the co-benefit of CO₂ reduction is the reduction of air pollutants. As the total production increases after the TFP improvement of the renewable electricity industry, the effect of reducing air pollutants is partially offset.
A Boy With Blau Syndrome Misdiagnosed as Refractory Kawasaki Disease

블라우 증후군(Blau syndrome)은 nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain protein 2 (NOD2) 유전자의 변이에 의해 발생하는 질환으로 육아종성 피부염 및 만성 포도막염, 관절염을 특징으로 한다. 증상이 비특이적이고 동시다발적으로 발생하지 않아 진단이 어려운 경우가 많다. 반복되는 피부 발진 및 발열에 대해 두 차례 가와사키병으로 오진되어 면역글로불린과 전신 스테로이드로 치료받은 바 있는 13개월 남자 환자에서 블라우 증후군을 진단한 증례를 보고하고자 한다. Blau syndrome is a systemic autoinflammatory disease presenting with non-caseating granulomatous dermatitis, chronic uveitis, and arthritis. It is caused by a gain-of-function variant of the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain protein 2 gene, which leads to the overactivation of inflammatory cytokines and eventually causes autoinflammation. Since the symptoms of Blau syndrome are nonspecific and usually do not appear simultaneously, it is challenging to differentiate Blau syndrome from other inflammatory disorders. This is a case report of a 13-month-old boy who had suffered from recurrent skin rash and fever. The patient was previously misdiagnosed as refractory Kawasaki disease twice and was treated with intravenous immunoglobulin and systemic glucocorticoid, which only resulted in transient improvement of the symptoms. He was eventually diagnosed with Blau syndrome.
The Effect of Isosaccharinic Acid (ISA) on the Solubility of Rhenium(IV) Oxide

Technetium (Tc) is a long-lived radioactive isotope, which exists as TcO4 - with high solubility under oxidative condition. The solubility of Tc is fundamental to assess the safety of radioactive waste repository in the case of a leakage of radioactive wastes. Cellulosic materials (paper, wood, cotton, etc.) contaminated by radionuclides are disposed of in low-level and intermediate-level radioactive waste repositories. Cellulose can be decomposed under anaerobic and alkaline conditions when cement pore water is saturated, and then isosaccharinic acid (ISA) is generated as a degradation product of cellulose. ISA forms complexations with radionuclides in solution and affects the solubilities of radionuclides. Therefore, the effect of ISA should be accurately evaluated to predict and assess the mobility of radionuclides in repository environments. In this study, batch tests were conducted to confirm the effect of ISA on the solubility of Rhenium(IV) Oxide. Herein, rhenium was used as a non-radioactive analog of Tc due to their similar chemical properties. Deionized water (DIW) and 0.1 M NaOH solution in pH 12.5 were used as background solutions, and ISA concentration was varied to 1~20 mM using Ca(ISA)2 and NaISA, respectively. The batch tests were conducted under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The whole batch tests under anaerobic conditions were performed in the glove box using oxygen purged DIW with a high purity nitrogen gas (99.9%) and low oxygen concentration (< 0.5 ppm). As a result, the rhenium concentration decreases as more ISA is dissolved in the solution, which shows the contrary effect of ISA on the solubility of other metals and radionuclides (e.g., Co, Th, Fe, Ni, etc.). It is assumed that the reducing capacity of ISA decreases the rhenium dissolution in the solution. Additional characterization of the oxidation state of rhenium oxide and the mechanism will be tested and presented.
Immunosuppressive Effect of Silibinin in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis

Silibinin is the major pharmacologically active compound of silymarin, the Silybum marianum fruit extract. Hepatoprotective activities of silibinin/silymarin are well-known, and recent studies demonstrated their anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic effects which are due to inhibition of the transcription factor NF-κB. Based on this knowledge, we hypothesized that silibinin could be effective in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) and so we tested its immunosuppressive effect in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), the MS animal model. The process of spinal cord demyelination and inflammation were observed and T cell migration was determined by FACS analysis. The results showed that silibinin significantly reduced the histological signs of demyelination and inflammation in EAE. Since cytokines play an important role in inflammatory disease, the proliferative response and cytokine production were examined in lymphocytes from spleens and lymph nodes. We demonstrated that silibinin Agnonspecifically down-regulated the secretion of pro-inflammatory Th1 cytokines and up-regulated the anti-inflammatory Th2 cytokines in vitro. Silibinin also dose-dependently inhibited the production of Th1 cytokines ex vivo. These results indicate that silibinin is both immunosuppressive and immunomodulatory. Validation Result of Combustion Method for Simultaneous Analysis of 3H and 14C

Combustion method has been widely used in the analysis of 3H and 14C in various types of radioactive wastes since X. Hou reported the analysis of 3H and 14C in graphite and concrete for decommissioning of nuclear reactor. In this work, it was demonstrated that the validation result of combustion method for the simultaneous analysis of 3H and 14C in non-combustible radioactive wastes. To validate the combustion method, 3H and 14C spiked to sea sand and soil were prepared and each simulated sample was combusted with the accordance to a combustion temperature program. The validation of combustion method was assessed by the radioactivity recovery, radioactivity deviation, and relative standard deviation of measured radioactivity. The results of radioactivity recovery, radioactivity deviation, and relative standard deviation of 14C were 100~105%, less than 7%, less than 5%, respectively. In addition, 3H showed about 90% of radioactivity recovery, less than 20% of radioactivity deviation, and less than 5% of relative standard deviation. It will be provided that the validation results of combustion method in detail.
