Background: Apolipoprotein E (APOE ) genotyping is an important test for predicting the risk of Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCRRFLP) technique for APOE genotyping is not widely used due to the need for special gels. Thus, this study aimed to develop an PCR-RFLP technique to overcome this problem. Methods: For high-resolution agarose gel electrophoresis of PCR-RFLP, a general-purpose agarose gel, lithium borate buffer (LBB), and high voltage were used. After electrophoresis, the change in the temperature of electrophoresis buffer was measured. We performed PCR-direct sequencing to confirm the results of the PCR-RFLP of genomic DNA extracted from 103 K2EDTA-treated venous blood samples. Results: When a small gel 6 cm in length was run at 300 V for 50 minutes in an electrophoresis chamber with a distance of 20 cm between electrodes, the target bands could be easily discriminated and only slight deformities of the bands were observed. The change in the temperature of the buffer was 14℃. The results obtained with PCR-RFLP were in complete agreement with those of PCR-direct sequencing. Conclusions: PCR-RFLP with electrophoresis using a general-purpose agarose gel, LBB, and high voltage is an accurate and reliable assay for APOE genotyping. Additionally, general-purpose agarose gel with LBB can be used in place of polyacrylamide or MetaPhor agarose gel for resolving small DNA fragments.

Most cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) infection in Korea (outbreak: May 11-July 4, 2015) occurred in hospital settings, with uncertain transmission modes in some cases. We performed an in-depth investigation epidemiological survey on the 178th case to determine the precise mode of transmission. A 29- year-old man living in Pyeongtaek presented on June 16 with a febrile sensation, chills, and myalgia. Upon confirmatory diagnosis on June 23, he was treated in an isolation room and discharged on July 2 after cure. An epidemiological investigation of all possible infection routes indicated two likely modes of transmission: exposure to MERS in Pyeongtaek St. Mary’s Hospital during a visit to his hospitalized father (May 18-29), and infection through frequent contact with his father between the latter’s referral to Pyeongtaek Good Samaritan Bagae Hospital for treatment without confirmatory diagnosis until his death (May 29-June 6). Although lack of clear proof or evidence to the contrary does not allow a definitive conclusion, all other possibilities could be excluded by epidemiological inferences. While it is impossible to trace back the modes of transmission of all cases in a large-scale outbreak, case-by-case tracking and isolation of infected individuals and those in close contact with them is important in preventing the spread. Efforts should be made to establish a methodology for rapid tracking of all possible contacts and elimination-based identification of the precise modes of transmission.
The Role of Government Initiatives in Building Open Innovation System
( Kyujin Jung ),( Simon A. Andrew ) 한국정책학회 2014 International Journal of Policy Studies Vol.5 No.1
While much has been written about the importance of open innovation and R&D collaboration, few have explored firms` motivation to support open innovation system (OIS). As a platform for promoting joint R&D activities, OIS provides important clues for our understanding of regional governance. However, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can adopt an absorption strategy in the market or freely ride on competitors` technology spillover instead of creating new products and sharing product innovation. Employing the data from Seoul Development Institute, this research tests three hypotheses among 336 SME in light of a regional open R&D initiative recently introduced by the Seoul metropolitan government. The findings suggest that SMEs without pre-existing R&D collaboration are more likely to support the OIS initiative if they perceived a greater need for managerial supports, whereas SMEs with R&D collaboration are more likely to support the OIS initiative when expressed higher importance on infrastructure supports.

In this paper, we propose the using Flexible Delivery Channel Selection (FDCS) to improve the QoS for MPEG4/SVC signal in MIMO-OFDM system. When we transmit the SVC signal, it has to consider the priority layer as base layer, and enhanced layer using adaptive channel selection. Especially, base layer has the higher priority, which takes through a good channel. In other hands, the enhanced layer has the lower priority, which takes through a worse channel. Because the priority of both layers are different, which are affected the video quality.
