Ree, Han-Il,Jeong, Kyoung-Yong,Nam, Sung-Hyun,Yong, Tai-Soon The Korean Society of Systematic Zoology 2010 Korean Journal of Systematic Zoology Special Issue Vol.26 No.3
Adult chironomids were collected at Dangsan-ri, Muju-eup, Muju-gun, Jeollabuk-do on 5 September 2008, 22 May 2009 and 28 August 2009. A total of 221 specimens belong to the genus Polypedilum Kieffer from 1,113 adult midges collected were morphologically examined, and 16 Polypedilum species were identified. One species is new (Polypedilum dangsanensis Ree et Jeong sp. nov.) and eight species are newly recorded in Korea (P. asakawasense, P. convictum, P. decematogutatus, P. japonicum, P. kamotertium, P. pullum, P. serugense, and P. unifascium). These nine species are described with illustrations. Polypedilum nubifer was the most frequently collected species, consisting of 25.8% of the Polypedilum samples.

A 37 year old female presented with epigastric pain and weight loss over a period of 3 months. Her abdominal CT finding showed a 4.5 cm size hepatic mass and 4.3 cm size pancreatic head mass with multiple macronodules in the liver. At the same time, her chest CT revealed a 5 cm size necrotic mass in the left lower lobe of the lung with multiple bilateral pulmonary nodules. We diagnosed these lesions as tuberculosis through multiple biopsies. She was treated with anti-tuberculous medication. After taking the medications, her symptoms were improved. Twelve months later, imaging studies indicated an improvement in the patient`s health. Here we report a case report of multi-organ macronodular tuberculosis in lung, liver and pancreas.
Involvement of heme oxygenase-1 in Korean colon cancer.

<P>Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) catabolizes heme into carbon monoxide, biliverdin, and free iron which mediate its protective effect against oxidative stress. The aim of the present study was to determine the expression level and activity of HO-1 in Korean colon cancer tissues and cell lines. HO-1 protein expression was higher (>1.5-fold) in tumor tissues than in adjacent normal tissues in 14 of 20 colon cancer patients, and HO-1 protein expression was closely correlated with HO-1 enzyme activity in cancer tissues. Immunohistochemical data confirmed that HO-1 protein was expressed at a higher level in colon cancer tissues than in normal mucosa. Furthermore, HO-1 mRNA and protein expression and enzyme activity were higher in the colon cancer cell lines Caco-2, SNU-407, SNU-1033, HT-29, and SW-403 than in the normal fetal human colon cell line FHC. Treatment with the HO-1 inhibitor zinc protoporphyrin decreased the viability of colon cancer cell lines. These data indicate that HO-1 may serve as a clinically useful biomarker of colon cancer and as a target for anticolon cancer drugs.</P>
NMR elucidation of reduced B-Z transition activity of PKZ protein kinase at high NaCl concentration

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A Z-DNA binding protein (ZBP)-containing protein kinase (PKZ) in fish species has an important role in the innate immune response. Previous structural studies of the Zα domain of the PKZ from <I>Carassius auratus</I> (caZαPKZ) showed that the protein initially binds to B-DNA and induces B-Z transition of double stranded DNA in a salt concentration-dependent manner. However, the significantly reduced B-Z transition activity of caZαPKZ at high salt concentration was not fully understood. In this study, we present the binding affinity of the protein for B-DNA and Z-DNA and characterize its extremely low B-Z transition activity at 250 mM NaCl. Our results emphasize that the B-DNA-bound form of caZαPKZ can be used as molecular ruler to measure the degree of B-Z transition.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The B-Z transition activity of caZαPKZ is uniquely dependent on salt concentration. </LI> <LI> caZαPKZ has reduced binding affinity for B-DNA at high NaCl. </LI> <LI> The equilibrium constant for the B-Z transition by a DNA-bound caZαPKZ was reduced. </LI> <LI> The chemical shifts of the B-DNA-bound form reflect the degree of B-Z transition. </LI> </UL> </P>

Adults of Chironomidae were collected at Soyang river sites in Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do on 1 August and 14 September in 2008, and 1 May in 2009. A total of 794 adults were collected, consisting of 52 species, 23 genera, 4 subfamilies. Among them, 7 species were recorded in Korea for the first time, and 9 species were new to science. These 7 previously unrecorded and 9 new species are described with illustrations. Eight species still have not been identified. The subfamily Prodiamesinae and four genera: Demicryptochironomus, Parakiefferiella, Psectrocladius and Monodiamesa are the first record in Korea. Tanytarsus seohyoni n. sp. was the most dominant species, consisting of 24.6% of the total samples.
Two New and Four Unrecorded Species of Chironomidae (Diptera) in Korea
Ree, Han-Il,Nam, Sung-Hyun,Jeong, Kyoung-Yong The Korean Society of Systematic Zoology 2012 Animal Systematics, Evolution and Diversity Vol.28 No.1
Chironomid adults attracted to the light were collected at Dangsan-ri, Muju-eup, Muju-gun, Jeollabuk-do in 2008-2009. Two new species, Lymnophyes parakitanaides sp. nov. and Parakiefferiella mujuensis sp. nov., and four unrecorded species, Cardiolcladius capusinus, Thienemanniella vittata, Conchapelopia pallidula, and Nilotanypus dubius were found and are described with illustrations. The genera Thienemanniella and Nilotanypus have not been previously reported in Korea. The genus Thienemanniella which belongs to Orthocladiinae is characterized by the radial sector retracted and apically fused with the costa, and the genus Nilotanypus which belongs to Tanypodinae is characterized by the absence of $R_{2+3}$, pubescent eyes and lack of the gonocoxal lobes.
