Anomalous Beam Splitting Phenomena Based On Negative Refraction in Photonic Crystals
Chung, Kyo-Bang,Kim, Ahyoung Research Institute of Science and Technology HONGI 2005 Hongik Journal of Science and Technology Vol.9 No.-
We report an anomalous Y-branching phenomenon for normal incidence of light, in a 2D photonic crystal composed of dielectric rods arranged on a square lattice in air. From the calculation of the band structure and the corresponding equi-frequency contour, we examine the origin of this anomalous beam splitting. By performing the finite-difference time-domain simulation, we present the time evolution of the electromagnetic wave for the Y-branching phenomenon.

We design a 1 X 4 wavelength demultiplexer based on channel drop tunneling in photonic crystals. We show the results of simulation of the demultiplexer device for tunneling properties of electromagnetic waves in a two-dimensional photonic crystal, with an application of the finite-difference time-domain method with perfectly-matched-layer absorbing boundary condition. We find four frequencies at which the channel drop tunneling occurs, and design a 1 X 4 wavelength demultiplexer based on the frequencies. To improve the channel drop transmission, we separate spurious reflections in photonic crystal waveguide simulations using a large computational domain, and obtain the results of highly efficient transmission.

In this paper, the algorithm of the finite- difference time-domain method with the total-field/scattered-field formulation and the Mur absorbing boundary condition for the two-dimensional TM case is established and programmed. The program is applied to the computation of the transmission characteristics of a two- dimensional photon bandgap structure composed of cylinders on a square lattice. Computed results confirm the existence of photonic bandgaps, and the variations of bandgaps with different parameters are observed.

We design a 1-by-4 optical splitter made of photonic crystal waveguides and analyze the properties of the optical splitter using the finite-difference time-domain method with perfectly-matched-layer absorbing boundaries. The photonic crystal is constructed by cylindrical rods in air on a square lattice. Our simulation results show that there are different transmission properties for four bend geometries and different incident-wave frequencies, and the incident power splits in the four arms with almost the same ratio. Moreover, we perform numerical simulations of T-shaped waveguide branches to reduce the reflections at the T-branches in the splitter. The branching region is treated as a cavity that couples the input and output waveguides. The improvement of transmission is achieved by placing the defects of extra rods in the branching region.

In this paper, the transmission characteristics of a two-dimensional photonic bandgap crystal of finite size are computed with the finite-difference time-domain method, which is formulated with the total-field/scattered-field formulation and the Mur absorbing boundary condition for the two-dimensional TM case. The photonic crystal is composed of infinitely-long cylinders on a square lattice. Computed results confirm the existence of photonic bandgaps, and the variation of bandgaps with different parameters is observed. For the photonic crystals with missing cylinders, the transmission properties of one two defect modes are computed. The variation of defect-mode peaks inside the bandgap frequency is observed for various relative positions of defects.

It has been observed that photonic bandgap crystals may work as functional photonic devices such as filters, waveguides, and microcavity lasers, if defects are inserted properly inside the structures. The work done to date has been concerned primarily with defects formed by removing rods in two-dimensional lattices. This paper presents the transmission characteristics of missing-rod defects and of circular, and square, and rectangular cross-section defects with different size and permittivity in a finite-size two-dimensional photonic bandgap crystal of square lattice. The transmission characteristics are computed numerically with the finite-difference time-domain method, along with the total-field/scattered-field formulation and the Mur absorbing boundafy condition.

It is essntial to accurately estimate the transformations and behavior of waves for the design of safe and effective coastal structures Occurring frequency of strong typhoons is increasing because of global warming and it forces to consider the influence of storm surge before the construction of coastal structures Numerical experiment is performed to estimate the variation of storm surge in Jeju outport The applicability of MIKE21 HD module to the sea around Jeju is verified by comparing the simulated results with observed data and the variation of storm surge due to the quay construction of Jeiu outport is examined. Data of typhoons which passed or had signficant damages to the sea around JejU outport during last 30 years are collected and analyzed, and finally typhoon RUSA in 2002 and typhoon MAEMI in 2003 are selected as simulation typhoon. Simulated maximum surge heights are compared with observed data and they showed good agreements After the construction of quay wall, the surge heights at harbor inlet and interior area became smaller than before the construction, but the differences are so small to be neglected.
A Feasibility Study on Wavelength Demultiplxers Using the Anomalous Dispersion in Photonic Crystals
Chung, Kyo-Bang,Hong, Soo Wan Research Institute for Science & Technology HONG-I 2003 Hongik Journal of Science and Technology Vol.7 No.-
We design a micro-scale wavelength-division-demultiplexing device based on the anomalous dispersion and band gaps in photonic crystals. We first calculate the band structures needed for the analysis of the anomalous dispersion, using the finite-difference time-domain method with periodic boundary conditions. Then a simple wavelength demultiplexer is designed and simulated by use of these results. The designed demultiplexer is composed of two photonic crystal structures that have different cylinder radii and are in close contact with each other. From the computed results, the possibility of micro-scale photonic crystal demultiplexers is demonstrated.
Immunologic Monitoring of the Renal Transplant Recipients
Bang, Byung Kee,Kim, Jip Dong,Kim, Hoon Kyo,Kim, Ho Youn,Kim, Choon Choo,Min Byong Sok CATHOLIC MEDICAL CENTER 1982 Bulletin of the Clinical Research Institute Vol.10 No.1
We performed E-rosette forming activities (E_10 min rosette, E_20 hr rosette), antibody dependent cell mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) with recipient's mononuclear cells as effector cells and chicken red blood cells as target cells, and natural killer cell mediated cytotoxicity (NRMC) with recipient's mononuclear cells as effector cells and with K_562, cells as target cells. These parameters were measured in cases of renal transplant recipients who were followed up at the Catholic Medical College. There was no significant correlation between E-rosette forming activities or ADCC and rejection process. NKMC in transplant recipients (22.22±3.3/16.0±2.41%) showed a significant decrease as compared with that of normal control (46.82±5.5/29.32±4.27%). The decrease began immediately and continued 6 years after transplantation. Although there was no evident correlation between NKMC activities and acute rejection, positive correlation between long term graft function and NKMC activities, and also the difference of NKMC activities [(effector: target cells ratio (50:1)-(25:1)] could be observed.
