Grant Allen’s The Woman Who Did : A Critique on Eugenics and New Womanhood
( Kam¸ Kyeong Yeon ) 동국대학교 영어권문화연구소 2014 영어권문화연구 Vol.7 No.2
This paper, which makes available the forgotten pictures and previously unnoticed complexites drawn from articles, introduces aspects of the work of a neglected naturalist and evolutionist writer of the late nineteenth century in Victorian era. In particular, this paper focuses on Allen's analysis of the social construction of marriage and his concern of the future race and the concomitant issue of motherhood and social progress. On the issue of recognizing and validating women's role as mothers and entitling them public recognition as a social contributor, Allen is in line with early feminists known as eugenic feminists such as Sarah Grand and Frances Swiney. As to the mechanism of evolution, however, Allen differed from their view in that he regarded nature as a driving force whereas eugenic feminist saw human control as the key note in the evolutionary process. Such tension is witnessed in Allen's New Woman Novel, The Woman Who Did (1895) in which the protagonist Herminia seeks women's emancipation through her task of mothering premised on eugenic ideology. Ironizing Herminia's failure and her death, Allen calls into question the practicability of the discourse constituting the eugenic project. Drawing on the theories on evolution and Richardson's concept of “eugenic love”, this paper examines social implication in Herminia's maternal agenda and investigates the condition of her project which is already doomed to fail.
A User Power Allocated Block Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding for Multiuser MIMO Downlinks
Kyeongyeon Kim,Joondoo Kim,Chungyong Lee 대한전자공학회 2009 ITC-CSCC :International Technical Conference on Ci Vol.2009 No.7
In this paper, we proposed the user power allocation scheme for the block Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (BTHP) system with the maximum likelihood (ML) receiver. The proposed scheme makes all users have the same receive minimum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). By the proposed user power allocation, BTHP system with the ML receiver can obtain considerable SNR gain and full spatial diversity gain. Through the computer simulation, it is found that the proposed BTHP obtains about 4㏈ and 7㏈ SNR gains at 10?³ bit error rate (BER) over the conventional BTHP and THP, respectively.
Precise Prediction of Optical Performance for Near Infrared Instrument Using Adaptive Fitting Line
Ko, Kyeongyeon,Han, Jeong-Yeol,Nah, Jakyoung,Oh, Heeyoung,Yuk, In-Soo,Park, Chan,Chun, Moo-Young,Oh, Jae Sok,Kim, Kang-Min,Lee, Hanshin,Jeong, Ueejeong,Jaffe, Daniel T. 한국우주과학회 2013 Journal of Astronomy and Space Sciences Vol.30 No.4
Infrared optical systems are operated at low temperature and vacuum (LT-V) condition, whereas the assembly and alignment are performed at room temperature and non-vacuum (RT-NV) condition. The differences in temperature and pressure between assembly/alignment environments and operation environment change the physical characteristics of optical and opto-mechanical parts (e.g., thickness, height, length, curvature, and refractive index), and the resultant optical performance changes accordingly. In this study, using input relay optics (IO), among the components of the Immersion GRating INfrared Spectrograph (IGRINS) which is an infrared spectrograph, a simulation based on the physical information of this optical system and an actual experiment were performed; and optical performances in the RT-NV, RT-V, and LT-V environments were predicted with an accuracy of 0.014±0.007 λ rms WFE, by developing an adaptive fitting line. The developed adaptive fitting line can quantitatively control assembly and alignment processes below λ/70 rms WFE. Therefore, it is expected that the subsequent processes of assembly, alignment, and performance analysis could not be repeated.

One of Korea's representative essay film makers is Kim Eungsu. He has made essay films since the mid-2000s, building his own independent world of films. Hence, this study examines Kim Eungsu's film world, and reviews specific ways in which the director's subjective thoughts were embodied, revolving around his representative essay films, Oh, Love, The Real, Mountain Lily, and Death of Narcissus. Further, this study analyzes how “embodiment of thought,” “textuality,” “formal experiment,” “self-reflexivity,” and “transtextuality,” which are the major features of essay films, were applied to and are concretely revealed in Kim Eungsu's essay films. The results of analysis are as follows: First, the texts of Kim Eungsu's essay films are uttered in two ways of subtitles and narration, which are clearly distinguished from each other by the feature of ‘contemporaneity.' Second, diverse and bold formal experiments are prominent in Kim Eungsu's essay films. The formal experiment is used as a means of embodying a creator's subjective thought, and this type was selected by him because it was most suitable for expressing his films. Third, Kim Eungsu's essay films show self-reflexivity mostly by actively using voice over narration, subtitles, and sound. This self-reflexivity acts as driving force that makes audience think about his film continuously, and constantly creates the relations of tension between reality and illusion. Fourth, Kim Eungsu's essay films create effective inter-textual interactions by quoting texts from literary works or films. Kim Eungsu's essay films reinterpret and reconstruct recorded images, revolving around subjective thoughts and contemplation, thereby creating new meanings. For this, voice over narration or subtitles are used, or diverse formal experiments are attempted. And it is found that a distinct tendency and peculiarities inherent in Kim Eungsu's films are revealed through these.

We present an optical imaging survey of \textit{AKARI} Deep Field South (ADF-S) using the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet), to find optical counterparts of dusty star-forming galaxies. The ADF-S is a deep far-infrared imaging survey region with \textit{AKARI} covering around 12 deg$^2$, where the deep optical imaging data are not yet available. By utilizing the wide-field capability of the KMTNet telescopes ($\sim$4 deg$^2$), we obtain optical images in \textit{B}, \textit{R} and \textit{I} bands for three regions. The target depth of images in \textit{B}, \textit{R} and \textit{I} bands is $\sim$24 mag (AB) at 5$\sigma$, which enables us to detect most dusty star-forming galaxies discovered by \textit{AKARI} in the ADF-S. Those optical datasets will be helpful to constrain optical spectral energy distributions as well as to identify rare types of dusty star-forming galaxies such as dust-obscured galaxy, sub-millimeter galaxy at high redshift.

In order to elucidate the fungal diversity and community structure in freshwater environments, numerous fungal strains were isolated from freshwater, submerged soils, twigs, dead insects, etc. Among them, the present study has focused specifically on Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Talaromyces species, which produce diverse useful metabolites in general. Twelve strains of Aspergillus isolated were identified as A. japonicus (n¼5), A. tubingensis (3), A. niger (2), and A. flavus (2), 10 strains of which belong to Aspergillus section Nigri, named black Aspergillus. Eight strains of Penicillium were identified as P. brasilianim (n¼3), P. oxalicum (2), P. crustosum (1), P. expansum (1), and P. piscarium (1). Two different strains of Talaromyces were identified as T. pinophilus and T. versatilis. Thus far, Penicillium piscarium and Talaromyces versatilis have been unrecorded in Korea, for which we provide detailed morphological and molecular characteristics.
