We study the effects of Zn substitution on single crystals of the low-dimensional multiferroicmaterial Cu3Mo2O9. We report the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram obtained from thetemperature and the magnetic field dependences of the specific heat, the dielectric constant, thedifferential magnetization, and the electric polarization-electric field curve in Cu2.85Zn0.15Mo2O9. We obtain three phases: a paraelectric and a ferroelectric phase, and a ferroelectric phase with alarge coercive electric field. The origin of the last one is discussed based on the charge redistributioneffect on a half-filled Mott insulator. In this phase, the Zn substitution induces a robust localizedferroelectric polarization that increases the coercive electric field.

There exist periodic phenomena in cells and the phenomena are considered to be generated by gene regulatory networks. Therefore synthesis of gene regulatory networks having desired periodic behavior has become of interest to many researchers. In this paper, we discuss a synthesis problem of gene regulatory networks having desired periodic behavior. The desired behavior are given by cyclic expression pattern sequences. We proposed a synthesis method for realizing a periodic solution trajectory exhibiting a desired cyclic expression pattern sequence by using Poincar`e map. In the method, we choose a point and make it become a fixed point of a Poincar´e map. However it is not always possible to make the chosen point become a fixed point. In this paper we propose a synthesis method without choosing a fixed point. We evaluate the method by performing numerical experiments.
Controller Design Method of Gene Networks Based on Gene Expression Patterns by Network Learning

Investigating gene networks is important for understanding mechanism of cellular functions. Recently there have been increasing research interests in synthesizing gene networks and several studies have been done. Synthesizing gene networks is a complementary approach to understanding functions of gene networks, and it could be the first step in controlling and monitoring living cells. In this paper, we discuss the controller design problem: for a given objective gene network and a desired expression pattern sequence, design a controller gene network such that the objective gene network has desired one. We propose a controller design method by discrete-time network learning in which the cost function includes evaluations of behavior of controllers. Numerical experiments are given to evaluate the performance of the proposed method.
Control of Coexisting Ferroelectric Phases in RMnO3 Crystals with Fine Tuning of 4f Moment

We have systematically investigated the magnetic and the dielectric properties of Eu0.595(Y1−xHox)0.405MnO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) single crystals with fine tunning of 4f magnetic momentswhile keeping the average size of the rare-earth (R) site the same. In the x = 0.3 crystal, the ferroelectric polarization along the c axis (Pc) emerges at 25 K; then, Pc is suppressed, andPa appears simultaneously with decreasing temperature. On further decreasing temperature, Padisappears and Pc appears again. The observed reentrant behavior of the Pc phase indicates thatthe Pa and the Pc phases are strongly competing with each other.

<P>We describe four new species of Asian Clawed salamanders of the genus Onychodactylus (Caudata: Hynobiidae), basedon fresh material collected during fieldwork in Japan, Korea, the Russian Far East and northeastern China between 2003and 2010, as well as older voucher specimens deposited in several museums. Our analyses comprise all species currentlyrecognized within this genus across its entire distribution range. We follow an integrative taxonomic approach bycombining detailed morphological comparative analyses with molecular phylogenetic analyses. We find significantdifferences among species in this genus, based on morphological and molecular data, which resulted in the recognitionand description of four new species within this genus. The new species have uncorrected molecular divergences of over4.5-7.4% and 1.9-4.1% to their closest relatives in the mitochondrial COI and 16S rRNA genes respectively. In themolecular analyses, we found two very divergent lineages in Korea and Japan that need further investigation, as detailedmorphological data are not available for them. We also discuss our approach to delimit species on salamanders. For thenew species described in this group we evaluate their threat status according to IUCN criteria: O. koreanus sp. nov. Min,Poyarkov & Vieites and O. nipponoborealis sp. nov. Kuro-o, Poyarkov & Vieites are classified as Least Concern, whileO. zhaoermii sp. nov. Che, Poyarkov & Yan and O. zhangyapingi sp. nov. Che, Poyarkov, Li & Yan are classified as Vulnerable (Vu2a).</P>

The klotho gene was originally identified as a putative age-suppressing gene in mice that extends life span when overexpressed. It induces complex phenotypes resembling human premature aging syndromes when disrupted. The gene was named after a Greek goddess Klotho who spun the thread of life. Since then, various functional aspects of the klotho gene have been investigated, leading to the identification of multiple novel endocrine axes that regulate various metabolic processes and an unexpected link between mineral metabolism and aging. The purposes of this review were to overview recent progress on Klotho research and to discuss a novel aging mechanism. (Korean J Intern Med 2011;26:113-122)
