      • Interventions for hemiplegic shoulder pain: Systematic review of randomised controlled trials.

        <P>Purpose. The primary aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of possible interventions for hemiplegic shoulder pain. The secondary aim was to investigate whether reduction of subluxation or spasticity can decrease shoulder pain and whether a change in shoulder pain is related to change in passive shoulder external rotation. Method. MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases were searched to obtain the randomised, controlled trials. Two authors independently extracted data and assessed the methodological quality of studies. Results. Eight randomised trials were found in electronic databases. Aromatherapy plus acupressure, slow-stroke back massage and intramuscular neuromuscular electric stimulation were more effective than the controls at the end of treatment sessions. Intramuscular botulinum neurotoxin A injection and intraarticular triamcinolone acetonide injection were not helpful at one or three months after the end of treatment. Only intramuscular electric stimulation was effective at three months. These analyses found that shoulder pain improved independently of spasticity and subluxation. It was confirmed that the change in shoulder pain was associated with change in passive shoulder external rotation. Conclusions. Although five interventions were used for managing hemiplegic shoulder pain, their effects were limited in the context of trials.</P>

        Alleviation of imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like symptoms in Rorα-deficient mouse skin

        Retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor α (RORα) plays a vital role in various physiological processes, including metabolism, cancer, circadian rhythm, cerebellar development, and inflammation. Although RORα is expressed in the skin, its role in skin physiology remains poorly elucidated. Herein, Rorα was expressed in the basal and suprabasal layers of the epidermis; however, keratinocyte-specific Rorα deletion did not impact normal epidermal formation. Under pathophysiological conditions, Rorα-deficient mice exhibited alleviated psoriasis-like symptoms, including relatively intact epidermal stratification, reduced keratinocyte hyperproliferation, and low-level expression of inflammatory cytokines in keratinocytes. Unexpectedly, the splenic population of Th17 cells was significantly lower in keratinocytespecific RORα deficient mice than in the control. Additionally, Rorα-deficiency reduced imiquimod-induced activation of nuclear factor-κB and STAT3 in keratinocytes. Therefore, we expect that RORα inhibitors act on immune cells and keratinocytes to suppress the onset and progression of psoriasis. [BMB Reports 2023; 56(5): 296-301]

      • Terabit-per-square-inch Phase-change Recording on Ge-Sb- Te Media with Protective Overcoatings

        We reported here nano-scale electrical phase-change recording in amorphous GezSbz Tes media using an atomic force microscope (AFM) having conducting probes. In recording process, a pulse voltage is applied to the conductive probe that touches the media surface to change locally the electrical resistivity of a film. However, in contact operation, tip/media wear and contamination could major obstacles, which degraded SNR, reproducibility, and lifetime. In order to overcome tip/media wear and contamination in contact mode operation, we adopted the W incorporated diamond-like carbon (W-DLC) films as a protective layer. Optimized mutilayer media were prepared by a hybrid deposition system of PECVD and RF magnetron sputtering. When suitable electrical pulses were applied to media through the conducting probe, it was observed that data bits as small as 25 nm in diameter have been written and read with good reproducibility, which corresponds to a data density of 1 Tbitlinchz. We concluded that stable electrical phase-change recording was possible mainly due to W-DLC layer, which played a role not only capping layer but also resistive layer.

        Skin-Specific Deletion of Mis18α Impedes Proliferation and Stratification of Epidermal Keratinocytes

        <P>The Mis18 proteins (Mis18 alpha, Mis18 beta, and M18BP1) are pivotal to the deposition of CENP-A at the centromere during cell cycle progression and are indispensable for embryonic development. Here, we show that Mis18 alpha is critical for the proliferation of keratinocytes and stratification of the epidermis. Mice lacking Mis18 alpha in the epidermis died shortly after birth, showing skin abnormalities like thin and translucent skin and defective skin barrier functions. The epidermis of newborn Mis18 alpha-deficient mice lacked distinct stratification and mature hair follicles, with a reduction in the number of proliferating cells and increased cell death in the basal layer. Earlier expression of the Cre recombinase from keratin-14 promoter in the ventral region resulted in earlier keratinocyte death in the ventral part compared with the dorsal part in the absence of Mis18 alpha, leading to more severe malformation of the ventral epidermal layers. As observed in Mis18 alpha-deficient mouse keratinocytes, knockdown of Mis18 alpha in HaCaT cells caused marked loss of centromeric CENP-A dots and chromosomal misalignment. Overall, we propose that Mis18 alpha is important for epidermal cell proliferation and stratification, because it is required for the deposition of CENP-A at the centromeric nucleosomes.</P>

        Enhanced out-coupling efficiency in OLEDs using ZnS nanodots

        <P>We demonstrated highly efficient OLEDs by incorporating ZnS nanodots on top of a glass substrate via a chemical bath deposition process. The device efficiency of OLEDs with ZnS nanodot arrays was 1.26times higher than that of OLEDs without ZnS. This enhancement in device efficiency is attributed to the improved light out-coupling efficiency that is enabled by the improved optical performance of nanodot arrays, which results from their high refractive index and optical transmittance in the visible wavelength.</P>

        We report the new design of a miniature electromagnetic actuator for probe-based data storage with antivibration mechanism. The actuator consists of a media substrate, silicon frame, 2 pairs of magnets, a spacer, and a printed circuit board (PCB). The total area of the device is 11.2 x 11.2 mm2 while the data recording area is 7.4 x 7.4 mm2. A net momentum free structure was included for high vibration resistance. The simulation shows that the lateral vibration can be reduced to below 100 urn for 1 G acceleration if the counter mass is adjusted with 1 % difference. The peak power for 50 ~m displacement is below 50 mW for a actuator with a resonance at 200Hz.

        Due to the commercialization of electric buses in South Korea, charging methods for electric buses have been studied and implemented. Currently, plug-in charging methods are mainly dominated in South Korea. However, there are various 전기자동차 charging sockets for them and they are inconvenient due to the manual charging method. Recently, in North America and Europe, an automatic charging method, pantograph-type electric bus charging system, is being commercialized. It has the advantage that electric buses can automatically charge fast even when parking or stopping. This paper introduces charging interfaces and communication protocols of the pantograph charging system for electric buses.

        절취부를 갖는 세로보의 피로거동과 보수·보강에 관한 연구(I) -정적거동 및 피로거동의 실험적 고찰-

        절취된 세로보를 갖는 강철도교량의 바닥판에서의 피로거동 및 손상시 보수 보강의 효과를 연구하기 위해 8개 대형시험체에 대한 모형시험을 수행하였다. 실교량을 대상으로 실동응력을 측정하여 기본 응력범위 빈도히스토그램을 작성하고 이에 의한 변동응력의 등가응력범위를 산출하였다. 이 등가응력범위를 기준으로 피로시험의 응력변동범위의 크기를 조정하면서 정적 및 피로시험을 보강전과 보수 보강후로 구분하여 실시하였다. 정적시험에 의하면 재하하중의 크기가 등가실동응력 수준인 시험체의 경우에서 이미 허용응력과 비슷한 응력을 나타내므로서 피로균열의 발생조건을 충족하고 있었다. 손상된 시험체에 대해 다양한 보수 및 보강을 실시하여, 각각의 결과를 비교검토하였다. 그 결과 보수효과는 stop hole을 천공하고 고장력볼트를 체결한 경우에 피로균열성장의 지체효과가 뚜렷하게 나타났다. 한편 보강효과는 휨의 지배를 받는 세로보의 경우 인장측 플랜지의 보강이 효과적이며, 복부의 보강은 보강방법으로 적절하지 않음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 직각절취된 세로보의 피로설계등급은 우리나라 시방서 피로설계규정의 E등급에 해당한다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. This study encompasses the performance of static and fatigue test for the 8 large scale test specimens to clarify the fatigue behavior of coped stringer and the effect of the repair and strengthening on the damaged stringer of the floor system in steel railway bridges. For the purpose of the research, the actual stress wave for the existing bridge was measured, the basic stress range frequency histogram was made and the equivalent stress range was calculated. Using the result from the equivalent stress range made by adjusting the stress range, the static and fatigue test was carried out by identifying the previous rehabilitation and after. As the result of the static tests, it was revealed that the level of local stress under the S1 specimen test of the real equivalent stress range was similar to tensile strength of the test material, and it was consistent with the requirement of the initiation condition of the fatigue crack. Through the various rehabilitation methods to the damaged specimens, the effects of the repair and reinforcement were analyzed. According to the results of the repair of effect, bolting the high tension bolt over the stop hole was confirmed to be more adequate method than drilling only stop hole to delay the fatigue crack growth. Futhermore, in case of the stringer subjected by bending moment, the reinforcement over the upper flange side was determined to be a useful strengthening method, and the reinforcement to the web of the stringer was not appropriate to accomodate as a adequate strengthening method. Also it was confirmed that the category of the fatigue design for the coped stringer met with the category E specified on the fatigue design criteria of the Highway Standard Specification in Korea.

        교도소 재소자의 자아존중감 및 심리적 안녕감 향상을 위한 집단프로그램 효과성 연구

        본 연구는 A 교도소 재소자를 대상으로 자아존중감 및 심리적 안정감 향상을 위한 집단프로그램의 효과성을 입증하기 위한 목적으로 수행되었다. A교도소의 재소자 중에서 실험집단에 20명, 그리고 통제집단에 20명을 선정하여 2012년 10월 15일부터 2012년 10월 26일까지 주5회 각 60분씩 2주 동안 총 10회가 진행되었다. 실험결과는 다음과 같다. 집단프로그램의 개입은 자아존중감 및 심리적 안녕감에 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 나타나 집단프로그램의 효과성이 입증되었다. 따라서 본 연구는 다양한 교정의 실천현장에서 집단프로그램의 활용 가능성을 제시했다는데서 연구의 의의가 있다. 연구결과를 토대로 몇 가지 제언을 하면, 첫째, 교도소 재소자들의 특성에 맞는 다양한 집단프로그램이 개발되어야 한다. 재소자 특성 및 유형별 집단프로그램을 개발 시 개별상담을 삽입하여 실시하는 것이 집단프로그램의 효과성을 높일 수 있을 것이라 사료된다. 둘째, 교도관과 재소자가 함께하는 교정프로그램의 개발이 필요하다. 교도관과 재소자들간의 신뢰형성과 상호이해를 높이는 집단프로그램의 개발되어야 한다. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a group program geared toward improving self-esteem and psychological wellbeing on prison inmates. The subjects in this study were 40 inmates in a prison. After an experimental group and a control group were organized with 20 prisoners each, a program was conducted 10 times during a two-week period from October 15 to 26, 2012, five times a week, 60 minutes each. The findings of the study were as follows: The intervention of the group program made statistically significant differences to self-esteem and psychological wellbeing, and the group program turned out to be effective. This study is of significance in that it proved the applicability of a group program in various correctional institutions. Given the findings of the study, there are some suggestions: First, a wide variety of group programs tailored to the characteristics of prison inmates should be developed. When group programs are developed in consideration of the characteristics and types of prisoners, individual counseling should be included, which is expected to boost the effectiveness of the programs. Second, the development of correctional programs in which prison officers and inmates could participate together is required. That is, the kind of group programs that are designed to accelerate trust building between prison officers and prisoners and bolster their mutual understanding should be prepared.
