Non-porous breathable waterproof PET fabrics were prepared by a UV coating of UV-curable polyurethane diacrylate (PUA) formulations. The performance of the monolithically coated fabrics was affected by the type of UV lamp, UV energy, photoinitiator type and its concentration. The optimal UV coating was achieved when the PUA formulation containing 10 w% benzophenone was cured with a UV energy of $3\;J/cm^2$ using a H-bulb. The moisture permeability of the UV-coated fabrics increased with increasing photoinitiator concentration with a marginal decrease in hydrostatic pressure. The addition of silicone diacrylate to the formulation was found to be beneficial in increasing the hydrostatic pressure. The UV-based PUA coating can be an alternative to the conventional thermal curing of solvent-borne polyurethane coatings due to the enhanced environment friendliness and energy saving.

Flame retardation of PET/cotton(35/65) blend fabric was carried out via UV curing of Bis[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] phosphate(DMEP), triethanol amine(TEA), trimethylol propane triaerylate(TMPTA) and melamine phosphate(MP). Optimal TEA and TMPTA were found to be 5 and 10% on weight percentage of the monomer respectively. Particularly the addition of MP particles increased the flame retardancy of the blend fabric remarkably. The LOI of 25.9 was achieved by the UV coating of DMEP without MP addition. The highest LOI value of 28.1 was obtained with the addition of TEA and MP, which was durable to five laundering cycles. The obtained flame retardaney of UV-coated blend fabrics may result from a condensed phase mechanism as indicated by lowered thermal decomposition temperatures, higher carbonaceous char content with higher residue number, which reduces the generation of flammable materials by changing the pyrolysis path of the blend fabrics.

Four kinds of polarizing film were prepared by two coloration methods of dipping and dyeing using either iodine or dye as a dichroic colorant. The optical properties of the polarizing films were compared at various concentrations of dichroic colorants and draw ratios. While iodine of low substantivity to PVA film showed little dependence of colorant content on the coloration methods, in the dye-type polarizing film dyeing method caused higher surface and bulk colorant contents than dipping method due to higher substantivity of the dichroic direct dye. However surface dichroic colorants on the film exhibited higher effectiveness in terms of observed optical properties compared with bulk dichroic colorants in the PVA film. While dye-type polarizing film showed excellent resistance to heat and humidity compared to iodine-type, coloration method did not influence significantly the optical durability of dye-type polarizing film under hot and humid condition.
