An Empirical Study of the Effect of Using Music on EFL Students’ Motivation, Willingness to Communicate, and Shyness

        Kitaoka,Kazuhiro(Kitaoka,Kazuhiro ) 영상영어교육학회 2023 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.24 No.1

This study measured the effect of using music in the classroom on 42 Japanese EFL students’ motivation, willingness to communicate (WTC), and shyness, and attempted to examine how these three factors are related. The study also looked at ways of creating a more relaxing and enjoyable, as well as a more effective, classroom environment through the use of music in EFL lessons. For these purposes, a mixed-method research was conducted using web-based Google Forms questionnaires on the first and last days of the fall semester in 2018. Quantitative results showed significant effects on WTC and intrinsic motivation, but not on shyness. The content analysis of qualitative data also revealed that while most of the students were motivated by class activities such as pair work, presentations, and music, some students were not able to overcome their shyness. Both analyses indicate that some L2 learners, if not all, still have difficulty in overcoming the shyness that is associated with Japanese traditional culture. The findings of this study suggest that the cultural background of East Asian students needs to be carefully considered in order to further facilitate a classroom environment where Japanese and Korean students can relax and enjoy themselves.

Lifestyle intervention might easily improve blood pressure in hypertensive men with the C genotype of angiotensin II type 2 receptor gene

        Kitaoka, Kaori,Kitade, Azusa,Nagaoka, Junko,Tsuzaki, Kokoro,Harada, Kiyomi,Aoi, Wataru,Wada, Sayori,Asano, Hiroaki,Sakane, Naoki,Higashi, Akane The Korean Nutrition Society 2015 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.9 No.4

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have reported an association of the angiotensin II type 2 receptor (AT2R) 3123Cytosine/Adenine (3123C/A) polymorphism with essential hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether the AT2R 3123C/A polymorphism affects blood pressure for free-living hypertensive men during a 5-month intervention period. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The subjects were free-living hypertensive Japanese men aged 40 to 75 years who agreed to intervention in the period from 2004 to 2011. Detection of the AT2R 3123C/A polymorphism was determined by polymerase chain reaction. The dietary intervention was designed to decrease salt level and to increase potassium level through cooking instructions and self-monitoring of the diet. The exercise session consisted of activities such as stretching, resistance training, and walking. Blood pressure, urinary sodium and potassium excretion, dietary and lifestyle data, and non-fasting venous blood sample were collected at baseline and after the intervention period. RESULTS: Thirty nine subjects were eligible for participation and the follow-up rate was 97.4%. The C allele proportion was 57.9%. AT2R 3123C/A polymorphism was X-chromosome-linked, therefore we analyzed the C and A genotypes. At baseline, no significant differences were observed between the genotype groups. After the intervention, there were no significant differences in lifestyle habit between the groups. Nevertheless, the estimated salt excretion (g/day) was significantly decreased only in the C genotype (13.0-10.3, P = 0.031). No significant change was observed in systolic blood pressure (SBP) (mmHg) in the A genotype, but a significant decrease was observed in the C genotype (150.0-141.5, P = 0.024). CONCLUSTIONS: In the C genotype, it might be easy to improve SBP through lifestyle intervention in free-living hypertensive Japanese men, however generalization could not be achieved by the small sample size.

      • [Oral Session 6] X-RAY PHOTOELECTRON SPECTOSCOPIC ANALYSIS OF ALUMINUM COMPOUNDS ADSORBED ON PULP FIBER SURFACES

Takuya Kitaoka,Hiroo Tanaka 한국펄프·종이공학회 1999 한국펄프종이학회 기타 간행물 Vol.- No.-

Aluminum sulfate (alum) as a representative retention aid in papermaking processes was added to pulp suspensions, and the aluminum components adsorbed on the pulp were investigated quantitatively by two types of X-ray elementary analyses with regard to simultaneous changes of their surface charges. Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray fluorescence analysis (XFA) were applied to determine the aluminum components retained in pulp pads up to ca. 10 nm and 100 11m depth, respectively. In other words, XPS was utilized to analyze the outermost surface layers of the samples, and XFA was available for measurement of their extensive regions. A particle charge detector (PCD) was used to monitor streaming potentials at various pHs of the pulp mixtures under moderate sharing conditions. At pH 4.5 of pulp suspensions containing alum, surface charges of pulp fibers varied from negative to slight negative (approximately neutral) according to adsorption of aluminum components onto the pulp fibers. Subsequently, when a dilute NaOH solution in limited amounts was added to pulp mixtures. both streaming potentials and surface aluminum content of the pulp fibers increased distinctly although little total aluminum retention increased. Further addition of alkali solutions brought drastic decreases of the surface charges and surface aluminum content, while total aluminum content, on the contrary. increased gradually under neutral conditions.<br/> These results indicate that residual aluminum ions remained in pulp suspensions are predominantly adsorbed on surfaces of pulp fibers by adequate alkali additions, and they must sufficiently cationize the fiber surfaces with increases of somewhat cationic aluminum complexes formed on the surfaces. On the other hand, aluminum components formed in higher pH ranges have nearly no contribution to improvement of charge properties of the pulp fiber surfaces, even though aluminum retention in pulp pads increases. XPS and XFA analyses combined with streaming potential measurement using a PCD suggest close relationships between aluminum content on the pulp fiber surfaces and their charge properties.

Magnetism and Multiplets in Fe-phthalocyanine Molecules

        Yukie Kitaoka,Kohji Nakamura,Toru Akiyama,Tomonori Ito,M. Weinert,A. J. Freeman 한국물리학회 2013 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.63 No.3

Magnetism and multiplets for Fe-phthalocyanine molecules were investigated based on the constraintdensity functional theory (DFT) by imposing a density matrix constraint on the d-orbitaloccupation numbers. We demonstrate that for a single FePc molecule, there are three stationarystates of multiplets, 3Eg, 3A2g, and 3B2g, and that the magnetic anisotropy (MA) strongly dependson the multiplet structures. The ground state of the 3A2g obtained from the constraint DFT totalenergy calculations has planar MA, with the spin moments pointing along the molecule’s planardirection. The columnar stacking structure for α-FePc, with the ground state of the 3Eg, showsplanar MA.

      • Poster Session : PS 0430 ; Infectious Disease ; Diagnosis and Management of Appendicitis in HIV-Infected

        ( Kumiko Kitaoka ),( Koichi Tokuuye ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Background: Appendicitis is a common abdominal emergency and traditionally classifi ed as surgical condition. Previous studies have suggested possible increased risk of appendicitis and special etiological features among HIV-positive patients. However, no prior study has evaluated what clinical variables are important in predicting severity of appendicitis, and deciding whether surgical intervention is indicated among HIV-positive patients. Methods: We retrospectively studied 323 patients diagnosed with appendicitis at our university hospital from 2007 to 2012. Results: Of 323 appendicitis patients, fourteen (13 male, 1 female) have been diagnosed with HIV infection (4.6%). In HIV-positive group, six patients were surgically treated (42.9% v 68.2% OR 0.33, P<0.05), and four patients were diagnosed with complicated appendicitis (28.6% v 37.9% OR 0.66, P=0.34). No mortality was observed. Appendicolithiasis was identifi ed in only four HIV-positive patients (28.6% v 47.8% OR 0.42, P=0.11). The HIV-positive patients with complicated appendicitis had lower WBC count (median, 6.8 vs 14.2 cells/mL) and lower CD4 count (median, 222 vs 571 x106 /l) than HIV-positive patients with uncomplicated appendicitis Conclusions: Of 14 HIV-positive patients, eight patients were treated non-operatively and there was no associated mortality. Among HIV-positive patients, complicated appendicitis has been observed more with lower CD4 count patients. The lower CD4 count should alert clinicians for possibility of complicated appendicitis.
