A Study on Different LevelStudents' Interest and Selfconfidence in English Extensive Reading
Kim. Do Youn. Chung. Hye Jin 한국외국어대학교 영미연구소 2013 영미연구 Vol.28 No.-
The goal of this study is to explore which English proficiency level of students will gain more interest and selfconfidence through English extensive reading by using a method of evaluation, which is a reading quiz. The participants in this study were 53 first year university students, and two intact groups were assigned depending on their English proficiency levels: a lowlevel group (30) and an upper-level group (23). The students first responded to a prequestionnaire concerning their interest and selfconfidence in English reading. During the extensive reading program, they read some modified books, graded readers and then took a reading comprehension quiz to determine their reading comprehension. The program duration was for fifteen weeks. After finishing the extensive reading program, both groups answered a postquestionnaire of which the format was similar to that with the prequestionnaire. This study revealed that both groups of students thought the English extensive reading program with a quiz was helpful, but as for selfconfidence, only the lowlevel group showed more selfconfidence than the upperlevel group. On the other hand, both group students did not show significant difference in their interest in extensive reading between before and after treatment. The most remarkable findings in this study is that the reason why lowlevel learners showed more selfconfidence after the program is the very simplified texts. Thanks to graded readers, the lowlevel group students, actually consisted of many different leveled students could choose their books at appropriate levels. Another finding is that both group students hardly have an opportunity to read English texts besides their course studies, so teachers need to give them many chances to read a variety of texts.

The goal of this study is to explore an effective grammar teaching method by investigating the effects of two form-focused instruction techniques, i.e., input processing (IP) instruction and output-enriched consciousness-raising (CR) instruction. Specifically, this study examines which one of these techniques promotes Korean students’ acquisition of English simple past and present perfect. The participants in this study are 52 university students in their first year. The students first took a written pretest and received grammar instruction in pairs or groups, using different techniques: one group with IP instructional methods, and the other with CR instruction. Each treatment was offered to the subjects for two weeks. One week after the treatment, both groups underwent a first written posttest. The findings showed that both instruction techniques were similarly effective in comprehending and producing the target forms in the posttest. Concerning the difficulty of forms, both groups did not have a significant difference in learning both difficult and easy forms. After the first posttest, the learners did not receive any treatment, but only took regular lessons of English reading. In a second delayed posttest, both groups maintained the effects of each instruction. The results of this study indicate that in an EFL context of Korean classrooms where most students are interlanguage speakers, instructing through focus on form in groups or pairs must be effective for learners to have more communicative competence and to develop accurate English grammar at the same time.
영어 다독 프로그램에 참여 후 평가방법에 따른 학습자의 흥미와 자신감 비교연구
김도연 ( Do Youn Kim ),정혜진 ( Hye Jin Chung ) 대한언어학회 2012 언어학 Vol.20 No.4
The goal of this study is to examine which method of evaluating extensive reading will cause students to gain more interest and self-confidence by investigating two methods of evaluation, i.e., a reading quiz or a reading log. The participants in this study were first year 86 university students: reading quiz class (30) and reading log class (33). The students first responded to a questionnaire concerning their interest and self-confidence in English reading. During the extensive reading program, they read some modified books, graded readers, and then either took a reading comprehension quiz or completed a reading log to determine their reading comprehension. This study revealed that both groups of students thought their assessment instrument was effective. Although both group students did not show significant difference in their interest in extensive reading in this study, as for self-confidence, both group students showed more self-confidence after treatment.

591 strains of myxobacteria that grew on cellulose as a sole carbon source were isolated from soils collected from various locations in Korea. Morphological characteristics such as the shape of cells, colonies and fruiting bodies and 16S rRNA sequences of the isolates suggested that all the isolates are Sorangium cellulosum. An antifungal assay has indicated that at least 20 strains among the 114 isolates tested produce antifungal substances inhibiting growth of Candida albicans.
