In Vitro Antiviral Activity of Ribavirin Against Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus Myung Jin LEE1, Kye-Hyung KIM1, Jongyoun YI2, SuJin CHOI1, Chung-Jong KIM1, Nak- Hyun KIM1, Kyoung-Ho SONG1, Pyoeng Gyun CHOI1, Ji-Hwan BANG1, Wan Beom PARK1, Eu Suk KIM1, Sang-Won PARK1, Hong Bin KIM1, Nam Joong KIM1, Myoung- Don OH1 Seoul National University College of Medicine, Korea1, Pusan National University School of Medicine, Korea2 Background: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease caused by a novel Bunyavirus, severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV). No effective antiviral therapy is proven yet, but clinical use of ribavirin (RBV) has been tried. We investigated the antiviral effect of RBV against SFTSV in vitro. Methods: To test for cytotoxicity of RBV, Vero cells were treated with different concentrations of RBV (3.90 to 500 μg/mL, two-fold dilution) and analyzed by cell viability MTS assay 48h post-infection. To determine antiviral activity of RBV against SFTSV, Vero cells were infected with SFTSV strain Gangwon/Korea/2012 at 100 TCID50 (50% tissue culture infective dose) per well in a 96-well plate, and RBV was added at the concentrations showing no or minimal cytotoxicity. Viral RNAs were extracted from the culture supernatants and quantifi ed using one-step real-time reverse transcription- PCR to amplify the partial large segment of SFTSV. Statistical analysis was done by one-way ANOVA with Tukey`s post hoc test. Results: Cytotoxicity due to RBV was not observed at RBV concentration =31.3 μg/ mL. Viral RNAs at 24h post-RBV treatment were reduced with increasing RBV concentrations (1-32 μg/mL), compared with those of mock-treated cells (P <0.01, Figure). Half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of RBV was 3.69 μg/mL at 24h post-RBV treatment. Conclusions: Our study shows that RBV has antiviral effect against SFTSV in a dose-dependent manner. Further studies are required to evaluate the effi cacy of RBV in SFTS.

This research is intended to investigate the changing process of Chung-dong area, which is another center of Kangbuk province (the North of the Han river) of Seoul since the time of enlightenment. Chung-dong area had been the center of Hanyang, the capital city of Chosun Dynasty, also the old name of seoul, since the foundation of Chosun Dynasty. In modern times it has been a key place of modern history, playing an important role in aspects of architectural history. From 1883 that Chung-dong area experienced a rapid Change. The next change took place in 1897 when Gojong became an emperor and set up Kyongwungung as new palace. Since 1897 Chung-dong area had become to a central site of Hanyang, the capital. Then it became a very important place politically and diplomatically, and it also has been a vital international stage which was preferred by foreigners. Therefore, it began to be changed with many new buildings and facilities for foreign people. Gradually it was the main base of foreign embassies and christian buildings. However, Yi-yang-kwan(western style building) was built within the area of Duksoogung as a symbol of civilization. On this imperial family of Chosun Dynasty limited the development and the height of buildings within the area of 500 meters away from Duksoogung. Japanese government made Duksoogung degraded and finally in 1933 they opened this palace to the public and changed it Japanese style. Soon they built their government offices and had Japanese settlers come in. To establish new roads was also to destroy Korean traditional order. According to the formal record of American Embassy, there is no other street like this which recalls clearly the atmosphere of the early western buildings in the last a few decades of 19th century. Historic roads were made to be narrowed, enlarged, or closed. As a result the area of Duksoogung has been decreased. Chung-dong changed from Seodaemun-gu into Choong-gu and Chongro-gu has been in the same area, where is suffering from extreme confusion recently. Now it is difficult to find the traditional buildings of Chosun Dynasty and many of them which were built in modern times have been destroyed or had severe problems. The old building of Kyonggi Girls' high school which was a part of Duksoogung is no longer a place to be allowed to enter. The plan to build American Embassy and apartments should be reconsidered and it is time to restore Duksoogung to its original state including American Embassy site, old Kyonggi Girls' high school, Hanam Hotel and Paichai Hankdang. The area of Duksoogung has been reduced and some parts of it belong to American government. It is the right time for the authorities and NGO to get into stride for 'the movement of returning old Chung-dong'.

Objective This study aimed to introduce a method to remove huge ovarian tumors (≥15 cm) intact with single-port laparoscopic surgery (SPLS) using SW Kim`s technique and to compare the surgical outcomes with those of laparotomy. Methods Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for patients who underwent either SPLS (n=21) with SW Kim`s technique using a specially designed 30×30-cm2-sized 3XL LapBag or laparotomy (n=22) for a huge ovarian tumor from December 2008 to May 2016. Perioperative surgical outcomes were compared. Results In 19/21 (90.5%) patients, SPLS was successfully performed without any tumor spillage or conversion to multi-port laparoscopy or laparotomy. There was no significant difference in patient characteristics, including tumor diameter and total operation time, between both groups. The postoperative hospital stay was significantly shorter for the SPLS group than for the laparotomy group (median, 2 [1 to 5] vs. 4 [3 to 17] days; P<0.001). The number of postoperative general diet build-up days was also significantly shorter for the SPLS group (median, 1 [1 to 4] vs. 3 [2 to 16] days; P<0.001). Immediate post-operative pain score was lower in the SPLS group (median, 2.0 [0 to 8] vs. 4.0 [0 to 8]; P=0.045). Patient-controlled anesthesia was used less in the SPLS group (61.9% vs. 100%). Conclusion SPLS was successful in removing most large ovarian tumors without rupture and showed quicker recovery and less immediate post-operative pain in comparison to laparotomy. SPLS using SW Kim`s technique could be a feasible solution to removing huge ovarian tumors.

The Anti-cancer Effect of Oriental Medicine Chung-Ri-Ja-Gam-Tang in the Mouse with Metastatic Lung Cancer. Proceedings of International Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 231-243, 1999.-The oriental medicine Chung-Ri-Ja-Gam-Tang is an herbal medicine which has been used for pulmonary diseases and known as having immune stimulatory effects. It has been known effective in lung cancer. So we studied the effects and the mechanisms of this herbal medicine it the mouse with metastatic lung cancer. The metastatic lung cancer of the mouse was produced with melnoma cell line(B16BL/6).5×10□/mouse tumor cells were injected intravenously to the CDF1 mouse via tail vein. The mice were divided 4 groups. The first group was treated with 50mg/kg extract of Chung-Ri-Ja-Gam-Tang per oral for 10 days after cancer cell injection, second group treated with saline after cancer cell injection, the third group with medicine without cancer cell, and the last group with saline only. After 10 days treatments some of the mice were scarificed and the lung and spleen was removed. The survival duration, weight change, the number of metastatic cancer nodule of the lung, the NK cell activity, the capacity of cytokines(INF-γ,INF-α,IL-2) production and the proliferation activities of mouse lymphocytes were measured. The surival times of the group 1 mice were longer and the weight loss was less than the group 2 significantly. The number of the metastatic nodule of the lung were decresed in the group 1 than the group 2. The production of INF-γ,was increase in group 2 than group 3 and 4, IL-2 production was increased in group 1 than group 2,3,4 significantly. There was no difference in TNF- α production and proliferation activity of lymphocyte in each group. The NK cell activity was significantly increased in group 1 than group 2,3,4. We conclude that the Chung-Ri-Ja-Gam-Tang has the effect of increasing the NK cell activity of the CDF1 mouse with metastatic lung cancer(B16BL/6). And it is suggested that the increased production of the IL-2 is the mechanisms of enhanced NK cell activity.

$quot;Background: Paragliding injuries are increasing recently due to the growing popularity of this sport. This topic has been discussed in numerous journals in the European countries with large mountains, such as Austria, Germany and Switzerland, Those studies gave information regarding the flight phase during which an injury ocurred, the type and site of injury, and suspected reasons for the accidents. This study was done to compare our data to those of other nations and give preventive advices to reduce injuries occurring during paragliding. Method: Nineteen paragliders documented as having injuries during paragliding at Chung-Ju, Korea from 1990 to 1997 were included in the study. Their accident reports including medical records, were analyzed retrospectively. Result: Eighteen of the injured were male with one female and their mean age was 25.6 years old. Five injuries were suffered during take-off, of which technical error was the cause in most cases. Also, 5 injuries occurred during flight due to a sudden change of thermal and wind condi- tions. The majority of injuries were suffered during the landing period, affecting 9 paragliders. They were mostly due to forced landings, unexpected obstacles, and sudden change of wind conditions. Thirty-three percent suffered spine trauma and 29% were involved in injuries of the lower extremities. Upper limb injuries occurred in 19%, and 19% also suffered cerebral concussion or contusion. Conclusion: We have found that spine and ankle injuries were commonly occur during paragliding, especially the landing phase. Proper knowledge of the procedures, adequate training and appropriate foot wear could help in reducing injuries while paragliding.$quot;
흰쥐 시상하부에서의 Neuropeptide Y 신경분포에 관한 면역조직화학적 연구

The distributions of neuropeptideY(NPY) in the hypothalamus of the adult rat was investigated using indirect immunohistochemistry. The method was showed that neuropeptide Y had a widespread distributions and was present in extremely high concentration in the hypothalamic nuclei of the rat. A few number of NPY-containing perikarya was found in the paraventricular nucleus, medial to the fornix and the dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus, also relatively many numbers was found in the arcuate nucleus in colchicine pretreated rat. Neuropeptide Y-immunoreactive axons and terminals in the hypothalamus were found in most hypothalamic nuclei. The highest concentrations of neuropeptide Y containing fibers were found in the arcuate nucleus, paraventricular nucleus, and also the supraoptic nucleus, dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus, preoptic area showed relatively high concentration of neuropeptide Y-immunoreactive fibers. The extremely high concentations of neuro-peptide Y in the hypothalamus indicate important role in many brain functions.
전압형 인버터에 의한 直流 스폿鎔接器의 定電力制御에 關한 硏究

In recent years, there is increasing interests in spot welder with industrial growth of automobile. It makes autowelding and short-time welding possible. Conventional spot welders using AC source bring about the depreciation of welding products, because constant current control makes its workpiece spattered during welding process. In this paper, the constant power control strategy using PI controller is proposed to improve the quality of the welding products. PI controller is implemented by l6bit one chip 80C196KB microcontroller. Simulation and experimental results show that DC spot welder with single phase PWM inverter is effectively controlled by the constant power control method in very short-time.

Diabetic foot infection is one of the important complications in patients with advanced diabetes mellitus. Limb threatening infections such as osteomyelitis, abscess, and necrotizing fasciitis are frequently accompanied by the disease. Non-tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) is a rare causative organism of diabetic foot infection. Thus, if one is not suspicious or meticulous, infection due to NTM will be easily overlooked and this will result in delayed diagnose and treat. Therefore, it is necessary to consider NTM as the causative organism if the wound does not respond to the conventional antibiotic treatment and the culture from the adequately obtained specimen reveals atypical acid-fast bacilli. We present a case of diabetic foot infection with osteomyelitis and abscess due to Mycobacterium mageritense, one of the rapid growing mycobacteria, that was successfully treated with surgical debridement and appropriate antibiotic treatment.
