• The impact of intratracheally instilled carbon black on the cardiovascular system of rats: elevation of blood homocysteine and hyperactivity of platelets.

        Kim, Hwa,Oh, Seok-Jeong,Kwak, Hui-Chan,Kim, Jong-Kyu,Lim, Cheol-Hong,Yang, Jeong-Sun,Park, Kwangsik,Kim, Sang-Kyum,Lee, Moo-Yeol Taylor Francis 2012 Journal of toxicology and environmental health. Pa Vol.75 No.24

Carbon black (CB) is an industrial chemical with high potential for human exposure. Although the relationship between exposure to particulate matter (PM) and cardiovascular disease is well documented, the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects attributed to CB particles has not been clearly characterized. This study was performed to (1) investigate the effects of CB on cardiovascular system and (2) identify the target tissue or potential biomarkers. Carbon black with a distinct particle size, N330 (ultrafine particle) and N990 (fine particle), was intratracheally instilled into rats at a doses of 1, 3, or 10 mg/kg. Measurements of thrombotic activity and determination of plasma homocysteine levels, cardiac functionality, and inflammatory responses were conducted at 24-h and 1-wk time points. Exposure to N330 accelerated platelet-dependent blood clotting at 10 mg/kg, the highest exposure tested. Unexpectedly, both N330 and N990 led to prolongation of activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), whereas these CB particles failed to affect prothrombin time (PT). N990 produced a significant elevation in the level of plasma homocysteine, a well-established etiological factor in cardiovascular diseases. Both N330 and N990 induced apparent inflammation in the lungs; however, both particles failed to initiate systemic inflammation. Neither CB particle produced observable cardiac symptoms as detected by electrocardiography. Taken together, data show CB exposure enhanced the cardiovascular risk by inducing hyperhomocysteinemia and platelet hyperactivity, although these effects may be variable depending on particle size and exposure duration. Homocysteine may be a potential biomarker for cardiovascular toxicity following CB exposure.

2020∼2022년간 경상남도의 한우와 젖소의 소 결핵병 및 브루셀라병의 발생률

        Cheol-Ho Kim,Yoo-Jeong Choi,Shin-Ho Lee,Dong-Hyun Han,Yoon-Ho Roh,Dong-Bin Lee,Jae-Hyeon Cho,Chung-Hui Kim 한국동물위생학회 2023 韓國家畜衛生學會誌 Vol.46 No.1

In the present study, the incidence of bovine tubeculosis (bTB) and brucellosis in Hanwoo (Korean native cattle) and dairy cow in Gyeongsangnam-do was investigated for three years from 2020 to 2022. The incidence bTB tested by tuberculin skin test with purified protein derivative (PPD) and gamma interferon (γ-INF) test with a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. From 2020 to 2022, the incidence of bTB showed a decreasing trend in Hanwoo, while an increasing trend in dairy cow. In the case of Brucellosis, the positive rates for Hanwooe gradually increased. However, no brucellosis was found in dairy cow from 2020 to 2022. The increase in the incidence of these diseases is presumed to be related the small scale and poor sanitation facilities of livestock farms in Gyeongsangnam-do, and easy access of wild animals. Therefore, in order to suppress the incidence of the diseases, it is necessary to the farm scale from small to large and to strengthen sanitary facilities on farms.

        Cheol-hyun Kim,Kang Keyng Sung,Do-hyeon Kim,Hong-Min Chu,Geon-hui Kang,Yeon-ju Moon,Hye-ryung Shin,Sangkwan Lee 한국한의학연구원 2020 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.9 No.1

Background: Although the incidence of autoimmune diseases (AD) increases every year, there is no effective therapy for it yet. This causes high medical costs to be spent on the management of autoimmune patients every year. The aim of this study is to identify the characteristics related to the causes and symptoms of gastrointestinal AD by collecting patients’ information and to further contribute to the development of an integrative medicine therapy for gastrointestinal AD. Methods: This study is a registry study of patients diagnosed with gastrointestinal AD. Subjects who voluntarily sign a written consent form after receiving a sufficient explanation will be assessed for compliance with the inclusion and exclusion criteria through a screening process on their first visit. A total of 35 subjects will be recruited; 15 will be assigned to the patient group, 10 to the control group, 8 to the caregiver group, and 2 to the medical staff group. The clinical information of the subjects will be evaluated through statistical analyses. As this study is a registry study, it will not test specific hypotheses. Discussion: If this study identifies the significant characteristics of gastrointestinal AD patients, the results will be useful for the development of integrative medicine methods for the treatment of gastrointestinal AD. Study registration: This study was registered with the Clinical Research Information Service (CRIS) of the Korea National Institute of Health (NIH), Republic of Korea (KCT0003976, date of registration: May 23, 2019).

      • A Near-Infrared Probe Tracks and Treats Lung Tumor Initiating Cells by Targeting HMOX2

        Kim, Jong-Jin,Lee, Yong-An,Su, Dongdong,Lee, Jungyeol,Park, Sung-Jin,Kim, Beomsue,Jane Lee, Jia Hui,Liu, Xiao,Kim, Seong Soon,Bae, Myung Ae,Lee, Jun-Seok,Hong, Seong Cheol,Wang, Lu,Samanta, Animesh,Kw American Chemical Society 2019 JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY - Vol.141 No.37

Tumor initiating cells (TIC) are resistant to conventional anticancer therapy and associated with metastasis and relapse in cancer. Although various TIC markers and their antibodies have been proposed, it is limited to the use of antibodies for in vivo imaging or treatment of TIC. In this study, we discovered heme oxygenase 2 (HMOX2) as a novel biomarker for TIC and developed a selective small molecule probe TiNIR (tumor initiating cell probe with near infrared). TiNIR detects and enriches the functionally active TIC in human lung tumors, and through the photoacoustic property, TiNIR also visualizes lung TIC in the patient-derived xenograft (PDX) model. Furthermore, we demonstrate that TiNIR inhibits tumor growth by blocking the function of HMOX2, resulting in significantly increased survival rates of the cancer model mice. The novel therapeutic target HMOX2 and its fluorescent ligand TiNIR will open a new path for the molecular level of lung TIC diagnosis and treatment.
[FIG OMISSION]

Objectives: The basis research of aged people's healthcare technology is very important, because our nation goes into an aged society rapidly. Especially in traditional medicine, pulse shapes of aged people were supposed to weak and empty pulse until now, but any objective measurement and compare research do not taken. Methods and Results: Therefore in this study we design observation study to find characteristic of pulse between younger group (age $20{\sim}30$) and elder group (age $43{\sim}80$) in Busan area. We used 3-dimensional pulse analyzer '3-D MAC' (Daeyomedi Co., Ltd.). And major parameters for comparison are 1) pulse height (h1), 2) applied pressure, 3) pulse power (energy), 4) high pressure duration (w) and 5) R-AI. Conclusions: According to analysis result, elder people's pulse has more large value in pulse height, applied pressure and pulse power than younger's that. It reveals that elder people in modernized lifestyle has Yang symptoms as well Yin symptoms. Consequently we need new method to care elder people's health, and this means more important direction than old text book. From now on verification research with objective diagnosis device like 3-D MAC, must be activated to build of evidence in traditional medicine. Cause traditional medicine's spirit of care and prevention is suitable to care elder people's cardiac and cerebral vascular disease those are have close relation with elder people.

      • The Refinement System Development for Lubricant Oil Waste in the Form of Organic Compounds Contaminated With Radioactive Materials

        Hui-Gyeong Kim,Yong-Ho Hong,Dong-Sik Jin,Sang-Soo Kwak,Dong-Cheol Kim 한국방사성폐기물학회 2022 한국방사성폐기물학회 학술논문요약집 Vol.20 No.2

Lubricant oil waste contaminated with radioactive materials generated at nuclear facilities can be disposed of as industrial waste in accordance with self-disposal standards if only radioactive materials are removed. Lubricant oil used in nuclear facilities consists of oil of 75-85% and additives of 15-25%, and lubricant oil waste contains heavy metals, carbon, glycol, etc. In addition, lubricant oil waste from nuclear facilities contains metallic gamma-ray emission radionuclides including Co-60, Cs-137 and volatile beta-ray emission radionuclides such as C-14 and H-3, which are not present in lubricant oil waste from general industries and these radionuclides must be eliminated according to the Atomic Energy Act. In general industries, the wet treatment technologies such as acid-white soil treatment, ion purification, thin film distillation, high temperature pyrolysis, etc. are used as the refining technology of lubricant oil waste, but it is difficult to apply these technologies to nuclear industrial sites due to restrictions related with controlling the generation of secondary radioactive waste in sludge condition containing radionuclides of metal components, and limiting the concentration of volatile radioactive elements contained in refined oil to be below the legal threshold. In view of these characteristics, the refinement system capable of efficiently refining and treating lubricant oil waste contaminated with radioactive materials generated in nuclear facilities has been developed. The treatment process of this R&D system is as follows. First, the moisture in the radioactive lubricant oil waste pretreated through the preprocessing system is removed by the heated evaporating system, and the beta-emission radionuclides of H-3 and C-14 can be easily removed in this process. Second, the heated lubricant oil waste by the heated evaporating system is cooled through the heat exchanging system. Third, the particulate matters with gamma-ray emission radionuclides are removed through the electrostatic ionizing system. Forth, the lubricant oil waste is stored in the storage tank and the purified lubricant oil waste is discharged to the outside after sampling and checking from the upper, middle and lower positions of the lubricant oil waste stored in the storage tank. Using this R&D system, it is expected that the amount of radioactive waste can be reduced by efficiently refining and treating lubricant oil waste in the form of organic compounds contaminated with radioactive materials generated in nuclear facilities.

Development of a model for animal health monitoring system in Gyeongnam I. Design, data and frequencies of selected dairy cattle diseases

        Kim, Jong-shu,Kim, Yong-hwan,Choi, Min-cheol,Kim, Gon-sup,Kim, Chung-hui,Park, Jeong-hee,Hah, Dae-sik,Heo, Jung-ho,Jeong, Myeong-ho,An, Dong-won The Korean Society of Veterinary Science 1999 大韓獸醫學會誌 Vol.39 No.4

A national animal health monitoring system(NAHMS) in Gyeongnam area was started from 1997 to develop statistically valid data for use in estimating disease frequencies in dairy cattle, and the associated costs. The objectives of this study were to : (1) discribe what was done to implement and maintain the system in Gyeongnam ; (2) present selected disease frequencies ; (3) discuss the epidemiological consideration of what was done and implications for the results obtained. Veterinary Medical Officers(VMOs-professors and graduate students from Gyeongsang National University, Faculty of Gyeongnam Livestock Promotion Institute, and Clinic veterinarians) served as data collectors. After training on current disease and management problems of dairy cattle, interview techniques, sampling methods, and data collection instruments, the VMOs participated in selection of the sample herds and data gathering. Forty of 167 dairy herds were selected randomly and the VMOs visited farms once a month for 12 months to collect data about management, disease, inventory, production, preventive treatment, financial and any other relevant data. Strict data quality control devices were used. Specific feed-back was developed for the producers and data collectors. Of the three age groups studied, cows had the greatest number of disease problems. The six disorders found most frequently were (from the highest to the lowest) breeding problems, clinical mastitis, birth problems, gastrointestinal problems. metabolic problems, and lameness. In young stock, respiratory, multiple system, breeding problems, and gastrointestinal problems were pre dominant, whereas in calves, gastrointestinal, respiratory, and integumental problems were major.
