          Effects of metal surface grinding at the porcelain try-in stage of fixed dental prostheses

          PURPOSE. This study was to evaluate the effect of grinding of the inner metal surface during the porcelain try-in stage on metal-porcelain bonding considering the maximum temperature and the vibration of samples. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ninety-one square prism-shaped ($1{\times}1{\times}1.5mm$) nickel-chrome cast frameworks 0.3 mm thick were prepared. Porcelain was applied on two opposite outer axial surfaces of the frameworks. The grinding was performed from the opposite axial sides of the inner metal surfaces with a low-speed handpiece with two types of burs (diamond, tungsten-carbide) under three grinding forces (3.5 N, 7 N, 14 N) and at two durations (5 seconds, 10 seconds). The shear bond strength (SBS) test was performed with universal testing machine. Statistical analyzes were performed at 5% significance level. RESULTS. The samples subjected to grinding under 3.5 N showed higher SBS values than those exposed to grinding under 7 N and 14 N (P<.05). SBS values of none of the groups differed from those of the control group (P>.05). The types of bur (P=.965) and the duration (P=.679) did not affect the SBS values. On the other hand, type of bur, force applied, and duration of the grinding affected the maximum temperatures of the samples, whereas the maximum vibration was affected only by the type of bur (P<.05). CONCLUSION. Grinding the inner metal surface did not affect the metal-porcelain bond strength. Although the grinding affected the maximum temperature and the vibration values of the samples, these did not influence the bonding strength.


          Realization of n-th Order Voltage Transfer Function Using a Single Operational Transresistance Amplifier

          A new configuration to realize the most general n-th order voltage transfer function is proposed. It employs only one operational transresistance amplifier (OTRA) as the active element. In the synthesis of the transfer function, the RC:-RC decomposition technique is used. To the best of author's knowledge, this is the first topology to be used in the realization of n-th order transfer function employing single OTRA.

          Shear bond strengths of aged and non-aged CAD/CAM materials after different surface treatments

          PURPOSE. To assess shear bond strengths (SBS) of resin composites on aged and non-aged prosthetic materials with various surface treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Cerasmart (CE), Vita Enamic (VE), Vita Mark II (VM), and IPS e.max CAD (EC) blocks were sliced, and rectangular-shaped specimens (14 × 12 × 1.5 mm; N = 352) were obtained. Half of the specimens were aged (5000 thermal cycles) for each material. Non-aged and aged specimens were divided into 4 groups according to the surface treatments (control, air abrasion, etching, and laser irradiation; n = 11) and processed for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The repair procedure was performed after the surface treatments. SBS values and failure types were determined. Obtained data were statistically analyzed (P≤.05). RESULTS. The material type, surface treatment type, and their interactions were found significant with regard to SBS (P<.001). Aging also had a significant effect on prosthetic material-resin composite bonding (P<.001). SBS values of non-aged specimens ranged from 12.16 to 17.91 MPa, while SBS values of aged specimens ranged from 9.46 to 15.61 MPa. Non-aged VM in combination with acid etching presented the highest score while the control group of aged CE showed the lowest. CONCLUSION. Etching was more effective in achieving durable SBS for VM and EC. Laser irradiation could be considered as an alternative surface treatment method to air abrasion for all tested materials. Aging had significant effect on SBS values generated between tested materials and resin composite.

          Korea and Turkey Free Trade Agreement : A Qualitative and Quantitative Assessment

          The trade volume and diversity of the products traded between Korea and Turkey has been increasing since the early 2000s. On top of this, the enthusiasm of the countries in exploring new opportunities led them to start negotiations on signing a free trade agreement in 2010. The process was finalized in 2012. The agreement requires that all trade tariffs on industrial products and most of the tariffs on agricultural products will be removed in seven and ten years, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first one that investigates possible economic impacts of this agreement on the Korean and Turkish economies. It employs a computable general equilibrium model and uses the Global Trade Analysis Project database. It finds that the agreement will benefit both parties in terms of GDP and exports. In particular, total gains of Korea and Turkey will be as high as 0.129 and 0.054 percent of their respective GDPs. Finally, the exports of Korea might increase up to 0.139 percent whereas that of Turkey might increase by 0.164 percent.

          Is anterior cruciate ligament surgery technique important in rehabilitation and activity scores?

          To compare the two different anterior cruciate ligament surgery tech-niques' effect in rehabilitation and activity performance. Fifty-five pa-tients were evaluated. Twenty-seven patients with transtibial technique (TT), 28 with anatomic single-bundle technique (AT) included. Tegner Activity Scale (TAS) was performed at preoperation and follow-up. The returning time of the sport and work was evaluated at follow-up. Sin-gle-leg hop test was performed at follow-up. Outcomes were compared between the two groups. The determined length difference between the operated knee and the intact knee was compared between the two groups. Average age of TT and AT was 27.9±6.4 yr, 28.3±6 yr, respec-tively. There was a significant difference between the two groups in du-ration of returning to sport. TT group had higher duration to return to sport (P<0.01). No difference between the two groups in duration of re-turning to work (P>0.05). There was a significant difference between the two groups. TT group had significantly higher values than AT group (P<0.01). No difference in TAS between the two techniques at preoper-ation and at last follow-up (P>0.05). The increase of TAS in patients who had AT was higher than the patients who had TT (P>0.05). No dif-ference in single-leg hop test at 55%–65%, 65%–75%, and 85%–95% level (P>0.05). In this test at 75%–85% TT group had higher values than AT group (P<0.05), AT group had higher values at 95%–105% level (P<0.05). Good short and long-term knee outcome scores depend on rehabilitation protocol after surgery. Surgery technique should provide the adequate stability in rehabilitation period. AT obtains better out-comes in rehabilitation.

          Isokinetic dynamometer evaluation of the effects of early thigh diameter difference on thigh muscle strength in patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with hamstring tendon graft

          After anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, which muscle groups are more affected from frequently developing thigh muscle atro-phy is a matter of debate. We evaluate the effect of thigh circumference difference between patients' knees who were administered the ACL re-construction with hamstring tendon autograft and intact knees, on torque between the hamstring and quadriceps muscles. Fifty-five pa-tients at least 6 months follow-up period available were included in our study. Power measurements of quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups in patients' extremities were done by using isokinetic dynamom-eter. The maximum torque values at 60°/sec, 240°/sec in frequency, po-sitions of flexion and extension were determined. In accordance with our findings it is still possible to encounter the thigh atrophy in average 28 months after ACL reconstruction surgery even under physical reha-bilitation programs and appropriate follow-up. It is inevitable for the cli-nician to consider these changes in diagnosis and rehabilitation stages. It can't be ignored that muscle weakness mechanisms developing in the thigh circumference vary according to the thigh muscle group and knee flexors play an important role in thigh atrophy when determining an appropriate rehabilitation program after reconstruction application.

          Evaluation of the accuracy of Lachman and Anterior Drawer Tests with KT1000 ın the follow-up of anterior cruciate ligament surgery

          Ligament laxity measurement is clinically valuable to diagnose the inju-ry and also to compare the laxity before and after surgical procedure. The aim of the study was to compare the accuracy of the Lachman and Anterior Drawer Tests to evaluate the knee examination with the KT1000 arthrometer after the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery in early follow-up period. Fourty ACL reconstructed knees were examined with the Lachman and Anterior Drawer Tests, and KT1000 arthrometer with compariable intact knee of the same patients. Physical emanina-tion findings were compared with the KT1000 arthrometer with each power. Spearman correlation and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis were used for the evaluation of relations between pa-rameters. Significance was evaluated in P<0.1 and P<0.05. The mean age was 28.18±6.21 yr, and the mean follow-up was 23.09±9.08 months. The mean KT1000 measurements of 40 operated knees state at 6.8, 9.1, 13.6 kg and maxium anterior displacement forces were 4.9, 6.7, 8.7, and 11.9 mm, respectively. The same values for the same acting forces of intact knees were 4.2, 5.9, 7.8, and 10.2, respectively. In Spearman's cor-relation and ROC analysis at 13.6-kg power on KT1000 arthrometer sta-tistically matched with pyhsical examinations (P<0.1, P<0.01). In our study, correlation of physical examinations with KT1000 arthrometer is a worthy evaluation technique that can be added to examination of ACL reconstructed knee to control with inexperinced examiners' findings. We suggest that at 13.6-kg power with KT1000 arthrometer findings perfectly match the Lachman and Anterior Drawer Tests of the knee.


          An Attempt to Model Distributions of Machined Component Dimensions in Production

          In this study, normal, log-normal, triangular, uniform. Weibull, Erlang and unit beta probability density functions are tried to represent the behaviour of frequency distributions of workpiece dimensions collected from various manufacturing firms. Among the distribution functions, the unit beta distribution function is found to be the best fit using the chi-square test of fit. An attempt is made for the adoption of the unit beta model to x-bar charts of quality control in manufacturing. In this direction, upper and lower control limits (UCL and LCL) of x-bar control charts of dimension measurements are estimated for the beta model, and the observed differences between the beta and normal model control limits are discussed for the measurement sets.

          Transcatheter Closure of a Residual Patent Ductus Arteriosus After Surgical Ligation in Children

          Background and Objectives: To assess the safety and efficacy of transcatheter closure of residual ductal flow after initial surgical ligation of the arterial duct. Subjects and Methods: Between June 2005 and December 2009, transcatheter occlusion of residual postsurgical ductus arteriosus was performed in six children. Results: The mean patient age was 10±5.5 years; mean post-procedural time since the initial surgical closure was 6.3±4.5 years. The mean diameter of the patent ductus arteriosus on angiography was 1.3±0.5 mm (range, 0.8 to 2.4 mm). Three different types of coils were used successfully without any complications. Conclusion: Transcatheter occlusion of residual postsurgical arterial duct is a safe and successful procedure. However, attention should be paid due to the distorting shape of the arterial duct.
