Effect of Co on Si and Fe-containing intermetallic compounds (IMCs) in Al-20Si-5Fe alloys
Fatih Kilicaslan, M.,Yilmaz, F.,Hong, S.J.,Uzun, O. Elsevier Sequoia 2012 Materials science & engineering. properties, micro Vol.556 No.-
The effects of cobalt addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-20Si-5Fe-XCo (X=0, 1, 3, and 5) alloys were reported in this study. The alloys were produced by both conventional sand casting and melt-spinning at 20m/s disk velocity. Microstructures of the samples were investigated using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Vickers micro-hardness tester was used for hardness measurements. Results showed that Co addition can alter morphology of Fe-bearing intermetallic compounds (IMCs) from long rod/needle-like structures to short rod-like ones, and lead to a more homogenous distribution in the microstructure. Addition of 5wt% Co leads to a decrease in average size of the primary silicon phases in as-cast Al-Si alloys. In melt-spun alloys, with the addition of Co, the microstructure became finer and more homogenously distributed, while thickness of the featureless zone has seen great increase. The optimum Fe to Co ratio was found to be 1 for suppressing the undesirable effect of Fe-bearing acicular/needle-like intermetallic compounds.
Depth Sensing Indentation Analyses of Hypereutectic Al-10Ni – XSc (X = 0, 1, 2) Alloys

Depth sensing indentation analyses of hypereutectic Al-10Ni alloys with different amounts of Sc content wereperformed to determine the values of elastic modulus, dynamic microhardness, creep rate and elastic recoveryrate. Microstructural characterizations were performed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SEMmapping and an X-ray diffractometer. The results revealed that the addition of Sc refined the intermetallic phasesof Al and Ni, and led to the formation of two additional intermetallic phases as well, namely Al3Sc andmetastable Al9Ni2. The Al-Ni alloys investigated in this work exhibited elastoplastic behavior at room temperatureand the addition of Sc influences their elastic-plastic responses to the indentation process. In addition, dynamic microhardness of them exhibited a load-dependent character called the indentation size effect. Theaddition of Sc considerably improved the values of dynamic microharddness, elastic modulus and elasticrecovery rate. It also resulted in a lower creep displacement rate.

In this project the morphology and microstructure of both conventional cast and melt spun of Al–20Si–9Fe–1.2Nb andAl–20Si–9Fe–1.2Nb–6Ni (at wt%) alloys were investigated. Therefore, in order to study the effect of added Ni on the morphologycharacteristics of the above-mentioned alloy, the resulting conventional cast and ribbons of Al–20Si–9Fe–1.2Nband Al–20Si–9Fe–1.2Nb–6Ni alloys were synthesized and analysed using OM optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, SEMscanning electron microscopy together with EDS energy dispersive spectroscopy. Observations exhibit that, XRD patternsof Al–Si–Fe–Nb and Al–Si–Fe–Nb–Ni ribbons revealed the peaks of only α-Al phase. Therefore, after adding of 6 wt% Ni,peaks of α-Al were shifted to the relatively lower angles with a very weak intensity. Furthermore, 6 wt% Ni addition causeshomogeneously scattered colonies (size range 5 –25 μm) which contain fine spherical (primary Si and δ-Al4(FeNiNb)Si2phases) particles in the α-Al dendrite of rapidly solidified Al–20Si–9Fe–1.2Nb alloy, the size of spherical particles werefound to be in the range of 100 nm–1 μm.

Objective Previous research shows that patients with schizophrenia have increased cardiovascular disease risk than general population. Increased cardiovascular risk in schizophrenia patients have been associated with many reasons such as antipsychotic drugs, genetic predisposition, andlifestyle. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the risk of heart disease and schizophrenia symptomatology. Methods The 10-year cardiovascular risk was assessed by the Framingham Risk Score (FRS) in 103 patients with schizophrenia and in 39 healthy controls. Sociodemographic characteristics, age at schizophrenia onset, duration of illness, number of hospitalizations, the course of the disease and antipsychotic medications were recorded. Patients’ symptoms were evaluated via The Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS), The Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS), and Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS). Results Ten-year cardiovascular risk was 5.16% inpatients with schizophrenia, and 3.02% in control group (p=0.030). No significant correlation was found between FRS scores, SANS, SAPS, and CDSS scores. However, FRS scores were significantly correlated with age, number of hospitalizations and duration of disease (r=0.300, 0.261, 0.252, respectively). Moreover FRS scores were higher (p=0.008) and highdensity lipoprotein (HDL) levels were lower (p=0.048) in patients using multiple antipsychotics. Conclusion Our findings suggest a relationship between the risk of cardiovascular disease and the duration and overall severity of schizophrenia and also highlights the role of antipsychotics in this relationship.
